- Second Sight are releasing Nicolas Roeg's Walkabout on blu-ray, sourced from a new 4K restoration. I compare this new blu-ray to the old Criterion Collection Walkabout blu-ray to see which is better.

Thanks for watching my video. Will YOU be buying the Second Sight release of Walkabout or not? Let me know :)
Heck yes!
Yes already pre-ordered some weeks back. The Second Sight limited sets are brilliant. I also think their World On A Wire and Berlin Alexanderplatz Fassbinder sets are superior to the Criterions. Not that the Criterions are bad, just that the Second Sight versions are that little bit better and the book that comes with Berlin Alexanderplatz Second Sight version is fantastic. I also have the Criterion version and have compared them and I think picture and sound are close also but the nod goes to Second Sight for me - higher bitrates and spread over more discs and better packaging and supplements. But either release is worth owning really...It really is splitting hairs. I just think it's good to get some good press for other smaller labels as Criterion is already a very known and successful quantity and I would like to see more smaller boutique labels being held up in the same regard (like Eureka and Arrow also are). Sounds like the Criterion Walkabout however is well worth a double dip particular with the special features so I might get that version at some stage. One thing you didn't mention Elliot is the sound between the 2 versions. How does that compare?
Bought it! Can't wait to see it looking the best it has ever.
I pre-ordered this too, so I guess it's on the way to me 👍
Recently picked up this release thanks to your words of praise of both the film and the work by Second Sight. I had never seen the film before but absolutely loved it for its visual style. Beautifully restored from a 4K Scan and would love to see it on the 4K format with a HDR colour grading which would really do true justice to those ochre and earthly tones of the Australian landscape.
The original Criterion Collection release of the Robert Altman “Short Cuts” contained the book by Raymond Carver. The second printing doesn’t come with the book
Had this pre-ordered myself, so good to see you got a copy early to review. Cheers for uploading, man!
A very comprehensive review! Mine has been on pre-order for months but this video makes me even more excited for it to arrive!
A nice review, Elliot. If you’re getting sent copies of prestigious releases like this, you’re doing ok! I’m a big fan of Walkabout and Nic Roeg. The script is by Edward Bond, who was a terrific theatre writer of the 60s and 70s. My copy arrives tomorrow; can’t wait. The extras sound good, but I’m sad that there is nothing from or about David Gulpilil. I understand that he’s been ill, but it feels like a misstep in this day and age. He has such a strong career in films. Walkabout is by no means his only film, but possibly his most famous. I’m glad that they’ve included the original novel, which is good, quite short (it’s what we’d call a YA story, nowadays) but worth a read at least once. After this release I shall keep an eye on Second Sight in the hope of other good, mainstream releases in the future.
Thanks so much Elliot! I've finally started upgrading my old DVD collection to Blu-Ray and 4K, and this was exactly what I was looking for. One of my favourite films, and just picked up the Second Sight release as a result. Subbed up and look forward to seeing your future videos. :)
Walkabout is one of my favorite films of all time
Eliot your videos are just top notch, very relaxing, very informative just a big fan as you know ... Also have this coming on second site label... They are doing such a good job
Brilliant video again mate, I'll definitely pick this one up cant believe I've never seen it yet
Regarding 4K releases (of which we know that there yet remains one for Walkabout), when possible, I always look to see screen comparisons for the Blu-ray, especially if the Blu-ray has a 4K scan. So, as with say, Picnic At Hanging Rock, my Second Sight Blu-ray (released in if I'm not mistaken) looks fabulous, and would not consider double-dipping. And even if I never obtained the film on disc at all, I do not always see 4Ks as automatically the best presentation, as some can be darker, ironically to the extent that detail is not as clear (to my eyes that is).
So my point is, if you have a 4K player and TV, your Blu-ray taken from a 4K scan will likely look terrific and perhaps show just marginal differences.
Anyhow, Walkabout, like Peter Weir's Wake In Fright (also a 1971 release) helped bring greater prominence and notice for Australian filmmaking.
Hey Elliot. Great review. Haven't seen this film before, but sounds intriguing. BTW, how do you keep track of all your titles in your collection? Stay Safe. Cheers!
Is this only region 2?
Hey guys, the website caps-a-holic has now posted screenshots of this, so you can directly compare screenshots of this Blu Ray to the Criterion Blu Ray. Personally, I think this Second Sight one looks a LOT sharper and more detailed!
Will the second sight look any better than the blue ray played on a blue ray player? I don’t have a 4K player.
Great video 👍🤗
I got one from second sight 👍, they were brilliant !, Especially as I pre- order from another company that has a habit of telling u it's out of stock even though it wasn't when I placed order.
Anyway cancelled, and ordered from second sight. Instant tracked dispatch, here in three days and packed like the crown Jewels 👍.
Did such a good job especially after the hassle , would definitely use them again even if it's knowing your order is packed with air bags 👍
How’s does the Audio compared to the Criterion & What’s the price tag? 🏷
I got my copy a few days ago, can't wait to dig in 😀
Dammit, I want to double dip...Great video Elliot!
Do the double dip! Thanks Nathan :)
How did you get Second Sight to send you the blu-Ray? And do you get to let keep it?
It’s a marketing strategy that some labels do. This drums up sales for them so most of the time the sets are free to the reviewer.
I’m a big fan of Walkabout. Since I already own the Criterion edition, I’m having a hard time deciding if I should buy the release from Second Sight. If it were a 4K UHD disc, it would be a no-brainer. I have Roeg's Don't Look Now on 4K disc from Studio Canal and that’s a great release. I’m also in the US, and region B discs are a bit inconvenient. I wonder if this works with the “top menu” trick on Panasonic players.
This seems like the definitive edition. I'm planning on picking it up unless it's outrageously priced...
Update. I did pick it up. It's an extremely.readonable price given the quality. I had expected it to be upwards of twice what they're asking.
May I ask what shelving system you use for your collection? Is it IKEA?
Hi Phil. No it isn't Ikea. I got the shelves from Amazon in the UK, sold by a company called Lillyvale. I think they're imported from China. It comes flatpack a bit like an IKEA package. I should do a video on the shelves! Cheers.
I'm going to get this but I'm a bit concerned that if Dawn of the Dead 4k, Which I've pre-ordered, does well they might re-release Walkabout in 4kHD format.
Hey Elliot it looks like the criterion of parasite won't be getting released here in the UK. Something to do with artifical eye owning the distributing rights in the UK. Do you know a good method of getting it imported?
I buy most of my imports through amazon, just make sure they come from amazon US rather than a third party seller though - you can pay import tax up front (about £5) rather than being confronted by a post man demanding £17 or £18 quid for import taxes and handling. So, basically, whoever you buy from make sure import duty is included in the price you pay up front.
@@andy0liver ahhh thanks for the advice, appreciate it. I'll be sure to do that.
I asked him the very same question and he recommended WOW HD.
Parasite is out in 4K which should be region-free (it doesn't say on my disc but 4K discs usually are. Idk if the 4K is getting released in the UK). Maybe the packaging and special features might not be as nice as the Criterion version, but the extra resolution and the HDR will probably give it a better picture anyway, even if it's not a huge difference.
@@SamLovesMovies25 Because Artificial Eye hold the rights to Parasite in the UK there will be no Criterion release here. Importing a copy will be the only way to get hold of it
Great video! Do you have a Letterboxd?
Thanks Sammie! I do, it's elliot_coen
Shame it isn't a 4K UHD Blu Ray release, the film deserves it.
I agree, would have loved this to be a UHD disc!
Never seen the movie before but it sounds like it’s right up my alley. I’ll probably pick up the regular edition even though the collector’s set looks really nice.
Preordered it a month ago. It looks and sounds incredible. Nicholas Roeg's other masterpiece is Don't Look Now.
Yes, Don't Look Now is also brilliant. I recently watched his movie Eureka which I think is another overlooked gem.
Thanks! I’ll look it up to watch soon. Love your channel!
@@martinstaller9118 Cheers, Martin!
I only own one of the Second Sight fancy releases and that is Flight of the Navigator...which I possibly paid over the odds for but it is a childhood favourite of mine. The first half is a time travel sci if film with a kid out of time (which I prefer as an adult) and the second is an adventure with a kid and his spaceship (which I preferred as a child, I would have loved my own ship to just jet off anywhere with).
Considered picking up the Australian release, which Second Sight got their master from. The Aus release has a really beautiful painted artwork on it. I've been a little on the fence purely because I heard a lot of praise about Roeg's Dont Look Now, which I watched and frankly didn't care for at all, so I kind of hope I wouldn't feel the same about this.
Hey Luke. It's quite a different film to Don't Look Now, so I'd still give this one a go. I'll have to check out the Aus release, cheers for the heads up!
Might get walkabout
just ordered from amazon. saw it on the cinema when it came out.
I actually haven't got many second sight releases but I got there release of there basket case trilogy! Stay safe and do the hard work 👍
Think I’ll wait for the standard, don’t need 3 books. But I do like reading the source material sometimes
Nice run down, haven't seen the film before but I've enjoy the other Nick Roeg films I've seen so excited to get this. The difference in colours between this and the Criterion release seem quite drastic, always gives me a bit of anxiety when that happens, like "which version is truer to the original vision" but I guess the nature of old 35mm film and how it's stored and degrades there isn't really one true version you can point to. Can't even necessarily fully trust the directors or cinematographers to help with that since they probably can't remember exactly the look they were going for at the time.
in truth I'm leaning toward sticking with the criterion colour. I'll think on it. But I'm not ruling out a double dip.
FYI: There's a good review and comparison on DVD Beaver. He insists the SS edition colors don't seem "unnatural" - his word, not mine...
@@GA-1st Fair enough - but I'd worry about a dip n that green water.
Wait, so they did a 4K restoration but it looks like they downscaled it for a Blu-Ray instead of putting it on a proper 4K disc? Idk, that seems like a real shame, an actual 4K presentation would be wonderful! Also, as nice as these limited edition sets are, they are more expensive and I hope that they will be available more affordably in a standalone disc or whatnot. For instance, it looks like Second Sight is also putting the original Dawn of the Dead out in 4K (an actual 4K disc I think) which the Blu Ray for that film has been out of print for years and is very hard to find so I would love to have that. However, the 4K seems to only be available in a fancy, very expensive collector's set and I don't want to have to spend $100 to get the film (the set itself is expensive and it seems to be really expensive to import it to the US!). It is frustrating, I want films to be available and accessible, and if they are only available in limited, very expensive sets, and expensive to import, then that doesn't help with that so I hope they will make affordable standalone versions of both Dawn of the Dead 4K and Walkabout (again, preferably on a proper 4K disc).
I don’t know if you know much about Second Sight but they release standard releases of their movies after the limited edition sells out. I except the Dawn of the Dead LE to sell out quick so we should get the Standard Editions fairly quickly.
As for why Second Sight didn’t release Walkabout in UHD, most likely they did the math and decided it probably wouldn’t sell as well in UHD. 4K buyers are even smaller than Blu-Ray consumers, and both are smaller than DVD consumers. Hopefully if it 4K sells better they’ll release a 4K release some day :)
Was going to order this but with shipping to the states, it's 57 bucks. Too steep.
Hopefully DiabolikDvD will have some stock soon. It’ll much cheaper through them. I just checked Base.com and their shipping fee to the US was 2.99 pounds for me.
@@myfasmarine Diabolik has it on their site, but it says out of stock.
@@myfasmarine Mucho apreciado. Ordered it there. Total is 37 bucks with shipping.
Maybe we can't see it on this video, but the examples you showed looked better to me in the Criterion edition. The SS ones looked duller and darker.
One of my all time favourite films but I'm not a fan of box sets, so I'll stick with my Criterion edition
Man what i wouldn't give for a region free blu ray player
Sony do a really good one, I got one from amazon.
Have you heard Arrow Video are going to release the two different films of Graveyard of Honour in one box set?
Oh yes I have, I'm very excited for that one :)
Can we expect to hear of your opinion of Graveyards of Honour boxset please?
It's a shame it's Region "B" only. I'm an American. I have to buy a multi-region player...
To be honest I've got asylum special edition on blue ray on second sight films the picture quality is .shit the worse I've ever seen loads of grain I complain to them
In general, film grain is a GOOD thing, because that's where all the detail is on the film. That's just how traditional film stock worked. Obviously the situation is different for every film, but generally when the companies try to remove or scrub/smooth over the the film grain in a release, it tends to look oddly soft and un-detailed. There is a difference between messy grain that more resembles digital noise and a nice, fine, beautiful film-like grain though (the latter of which I personally like).
@@SamLovesMovies25 this is really bad other people said the same
That was a pretty old Second Sight release. The stuff they have been doing in recent times has been amazing, at least in my opinion. Having said that I've mainly focused on their special/limited editions and not their standard releases so I can't speak for those.
How dare you with the thumbnail 😮
Sadly this releases are so expensive... so no buy... :(
