I adore this movie .. I’m a cinema critic/artist, myself and both le samurai and le circle rouge are solid exemplary masterpieces of the collaboration between melville and captivatingly handsome Delon. The sepia cinematography along with the mysterious undertones and overtones of the film set it on a legendary crime genre status.
Hello, Anna! It has been a bit since I’ve seen Le Samurai so I need to revisit that film. Beautiful photography and nice performance from Delon.
@@20thand21stMovies those too were the best collaborations between Delon & Melville. They’ve also made the third and love film of this Neo noir - crime genre le flic. It’s interesting you should check it out but not on the league of le samurai and le circle rouge. 🎬
Fantastic film! I'm a sucker for all things Melville. I highly recommend all of his releases on Criterion. I especially enjoyed Le Deuxieme Souffle and Bob Le Flambeur. Thanks for putting in the time to create quality reviews!
Hey The Fall Guy! Thanks for those recommendations on other Melville films in the Criterion Collection. Will need to check those out at some point.
I love how you get into the nitty gritty of the transfer and how you appreciate the visuals - to me this is also an important aspect of every release - especially when it comes to 4K. I've also heard the controversy about the color timing, but as you say, based on what I've seen from the screenshots, it looks quite nice to my eyes.
Thank you, Tim! Yes, I try to convey as best as I can what I think of the picture quality in my reviews. I find it interesting the different takes that people have based on their experiences seeing a film in previous formats and releases, and a lot of it is subjective to be sure. I'm learning more about the restoration process and plan to up my game in that regard in describing it with a little more technical accuracy 😀.
Love that you took your copy with you on your business trip, lol. I also got this film and it is one of Delon’s best. Thank you for going over it.
Rafael J, I enjoyed this film quite a bit and look forward to rewatching it soon. Good movie.
Hi James. I just watched my first three Melville films (La Silence de la Mer, Le Deuxieme Souffle and Le Samourai) and am looking forward to seeing this one very much. I hope Criterion releases more Blu-ray/4K upgrades of his out-of-print and DVD titles. Very interesting director. Thanks for the review and enjoy your trip. (More than once I've taken my Blu-ray player on the road! 🙂).
island007100, hello there! I have not seen La Silence de la Mer yet but look forward to checking out that title and more from Melville and I agree, the more 4K and blu-ray titles of his films the better. Hey, that’s cool that you’ve taken your blu-ray player with you on the road sometimes if you have time to enjoy the media when you’re away. 😊
Thanks for the review James! For me it's a tie between this film and Le Samourai as my favorites from Melville. I have the previous 2011 blu-ray edition from Criterion that became out of print in the summer of 2012 along with Last Year at Marienbad, Howard's End and a bunch of other great films. I'm pretty sure I'll make the upgrade to 4K on this one thanks to your insights on the details of the new restoration for this release. Also pretty cool from your part to record your review videos while on business trips.
Hello, Sergio! Glad you enjoyed the review. Seeing Le Cercle Rouge makes me want to revisit Le Samourai soon. I hope you enjoy the 4K edition of Le Cercle Rouge when you have a chance to pick it up!
I am going to need to add this one to the collection. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Absolutely, Tony! I really enjoyed Le Cercle Rouge on 4K and look forward to revisiting it in the future. So many great titles coming out this year, it’s hard to keep up 😊.
Alain Delon has another film in the Criterion Collection. That film is "Purple Noon" from 1960. It a French version of the book "The Talented Mr. Ripley". The American version of the book stars Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gywneth Paltrow. For a hardboiled French gangster film I would recommend Mesrine: Killer Instinct and Mesrine: Public enemy #1. The films star Vincent Cassell as notorious gangster Jacque Mesrine.
LilannB, thanks for the recommendations! I’ve seen Purple Noon in Barnes and Noble for years but haven’t yet pulled the trigger on it. Maybe this year in the July or November sale.
Hi James - great piece of trivia- - Gian Maria Volante was the villain in two Clint Eastwood “dollars “ movies.
William, that’s right. He did appear in A Fistful of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More. Great actor.
@@20thand21stMovies If you are interested, both movies are now available for preorder on Amazon in 4k for end of May release.
Great review!
Thank you, Slate! Glad you enjoyed it 😊.
The next Criterion sale I’m adding this one.
Travelin Man, yes, it’s a good one and would make for a great pick up in an upcoming sale!
Just a heads up, Bob Le Flambeur and Le Doulos two of Melville’s greatest films are on sale for 9.99 on bluray on Kino’s site. I have particularly always loved Bob Le Flambeur.
A lot of great titles this time. A few more I highly recommend are Our Hospitality, Touchez Pas Au Grisbi, Last Year At Marienbad, The Mystery of Picasso, Port of Shadows, The Southerner, The Ox Bow Incident, Kind Hearts and Coronets, Love Me Tonight, The Taking of Pelham 123, Taxi, The Little Fugitive, Way Down East,Sacrifice, Lillies of the Fields, Hyenas, The Old Dark House, Nosferatu, Sidewalk Stories, Take the Money and Run, Clockers, The Milky Way….
Also Hitchcock’s Rich and Strange just got released to bluray. I have had it on a bad DVD for years so I’m happy to be able to upgrade finally. Always loved it and thought it was one of his more fascinating films, really odd , almost like you’re watching someone else’s dream. And I know you like Billy Wilder, Fortune Cookie and A Foreign Affair are both quite good.
Ethan, thanks for the heads up! I do want to dive more into Melville’s filmography.
Touchez Pas Au Grisbi was made by Jacques Becker but it fits nicely with Melville’s films. It’s one of the great French gangster films and has a great Jean Gabin performance.
Does anyone know if the included regular blu ray disc is the previous 2011 mastering or is it based off of the 4k mastering?
Alan, my understanding is the blu-ray included in the Le Cercle Rouge 4K UHD Blu-Ray combo has the new restoration. Merry Christmas!
@@20thand21stMovies Thank you. I have the old DVD from Criterion and just got the Blu ray 4K combo but haven't watched it yet. I have no 4K player and don't plan to get one in the future so this was a good deal to get the blu ray since the old criterion blu ray was priced so high.
I thought it was Denzel Washington in the description .. the resemblance is uncanny
Ha ha. No, that’s Alain Delon in this film 😀.
You must be an incredibly diehard criterion fan if you bring your criterion movies with you when you’re traveling on business
Ha ha, I must admit I am a bit of a nut when it comes to movies and physical media but, hey, we all have our vices 😊.
So you're 'Out of town on business' eh?
Somewhere in France? ; -)
LOL! Ha ha, I wish, jaye. Now that would be nice (on business in Paris with a view of the Eiffel Tower from the hotel ....)
@@20thand21stMovies I hope you've got the marksman to open that lock...🤫 Best wishes.
