How stable is the US-China relationship, really? It felt like frosty relations might finally be thawing after a meeting between President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco last November. However, thereâs still a lot of daylight and no trust between the two. On GZERO World, Ian Bremmer sits down with US Ambassador to China Nick Burns for a frank conversation about how US-China has changed since Biden took office, what the two countries agree on, and where theyâre still miles apart.
âThis is largely a competitive relationship,â Burns tells Bremmer. Itâll likely be a systemic rivalry well into the 2030s between the two largest economies in the world and the two strongest militaries in the world, so what happens here is very consequential.â
Burns doesnât see a major shift in the status quo any time soon, with the US and China competing for military superiority, security in the Indo-Pacific, and trade and investment well into the next decade. But he also points to the $575 billion two-way trade relationship between the two countries, explaining why the US doesnât favor a total decoupling of their economies. Later, Burns and Bremmer discuss challenges surrounding Taiwan, aggression in the South China Sea, Congressâs proposed TikTok ban, and the risk for American companies in the Peopleâs Republic as Beijing continues to prioritize national security.

Wasnt American gov that forced Taiwan to hand over production data on mainland chinese customersâ data/orders? Without these companiesâ permission? So then China made an espionage data law ??
Wow, I didnât know that⊠This is funny because the US claimed the espionage law was because of how âtyrannical the CCP isâ.
But that makes more sense.
Lower growth but still doubled that of America 's
Pride and prejudice, literally.
Is fentanyl really an issue for China, or payback for the opium wars and part of their total war strategy?
Scott, so two wrongs make a right? In your mind, the sins of a century ago excuse the horrors of fentanyl? How righteous of you!
đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
It's called supply and demand.
Plus they are only selling the chemicals that can be used for other things or mix and match to make Feny,âïž what revenge âïž
HOW COME WE DON'T HV DRUG PROBLEM ? đ
The opium war was between England and China, not the U.S. and China.
@@lvthsun23 you didn't know that the grandfather of Franklin Roosevelt got rich from selling âïžđ€«âïž to china âïž
Plus china is only selling chemicals that are mixed together to make fentanyl.
Plus fentanyl is a pain killer âïž coming from Mexico âïž
Our ambassador really needs to balance the USA and China relations. Thank for the video very easy to understand.
Thank you.
iPhones make in India, sell in China. No wonder sales are falling
Yeah, most of the phones made in India were not up to par, so they decided theyâd sell the ones made in China to Europe and America, and then sell the ones made in India to the Indians, Chinese and probably the Africans. Of course that led to the Chinese reacting, for example blocking iPhone imports and many Chinese citizens reduced their iPhone purchases, according to what I heard.
I mean, if they want to sell iPhones in China, they donât really need to import, since the phones are already made in China anyway. (It was a slap on their face)
Because one thing many western companies donât realize is, the Chinese citizens also see what is happening, even if theyâre mostly quiet on CZcams.
And so you know, China has a market of about 1.1 billion people (total population is 1.4 billion people). EU has a market of less than 410 million people, the USA has a market of 330 million people. (Point is, China is a HUGE market to get involved in, and itâs not some market of poor people, itâs by far the largest middle class population in the world).
Ian, can you at least push back a little bit so that there's some back and forth? This is rather disappointing to watch. If I wanna know the official US stance on China, i can just go watch, say, any news network in the state?
This video is about the strategy between the two countries straight from the US Ambassador's mouth. What was Ian supposed to start debating about with this guy? I guess you wanted to hear Ian propose a better plan or something?
@@danielm5161 Yes I want to hear a better plan

âSimple interaction with a foreigner dangerousâ. Really? Whatâs your source of information? Also, have you noticed the tension started to ramp up once the US âpivoted to Asiaâ. So who really is the instigator in all that tension? Is your American identity get in the way of clearing thinking? Ian??
Asia pivoted to America. How you think China got so rich? Because Americans are buying their stuff
1:25 Didnât Janet Yellen just go over there and smooth things out?
Nah, Jenet yellen went there to make demands, and they probably respected her because of her age.
China gave her a gentle shove and short yelling

Diaoyu island in East China Sea is in China economic Zone. Why does US support Japan to illegally occupy? It runs contradicted to your arguments for Philippines in South China Sea!

You are not presenting China in the true nature. Talking rubbish.
Pls stop. 6min of it? I have to skip certain propagandise sections of bremmars videos again. I come here to get an insight in what the west is feeding into the minds of a western public. But it really makes my mind hurt when i have to hear the same old messaging. What is Nick Burnâs public thoights? When can i skip to that part?? At 6min mark? Jeez

US version on Human Rightsđđđđ
I think we're probably reacting to the same comment from the guest.
There's a certain variety of Liberal discourse in the USA that still describes American politics as the shining city on a hill China should aspire to.
In fact, China now has a higher life expectancy than the USA...
If we're looking for model countries on human rights, neither the USA nor China makes the list.
If you're looking for model countries on loading up your population with historic amounts of debt and lying about it, they're on that list.
The treatment of the poor, sick and elderly in the USA is not good at the moment.
Respect for international law has been low amongst certain American administrations.
I have some systemic solutions, but you don't get there conceptually until you recognize how optimistic this variety of Liberalism sounds in the current context.
The historical analogies for America looks like pre-fall Soviet Union or late Victorian UK to me!

US want to maintain his hegemonic position in all aspect, such GDP, Technology development, military development ,finance etc. When Japan's GDP rose to 75% of US GDP, then it force japanese yuan to devalue, US also suppress japan semiconductor development, likewise it also suppress the France Alstom development, as for Russia, US doesn't allowed their nuclear power bigger than them, since the collapse of Soviet Union, till today it try all means to sanction on Russia, and try to further weaken and make it collapse further. As for China, it is very jealous china as economic power leader for most of the nations, like BRI, BRICKS etc, and find ways and mead to instigate and threaten those participating nations to withdraw. basically, USA it just a trouble maker for the world, just imagine, it is how nice that if the world can have 10 to 15years peaceful time, without wars and conflict, but on US side can they survive and sustain its economy growth without having wars in 5 years periods?
Just imagine, if there are no wars in all nations, what will be the political situations and environment in Europe, US, will US and NATO be able to sustain their military power in the next few years? The US always wants to instigate and create trouble between India and China, the same thing happens to those nations that participate in BRI and BRICKs. In my opinion, the US is the troublemaker for world peace.
