I think you nailed it with 3 year lease for whoever wants it for the “here & now” of it all. Kudos to Mercedes for creating it!

  • @tmwei396
    @tmwei396 Před 4 lety +50

    After my last Mercedes I think I'm staying away from them for a while. They're banking on people who are attracted to vehicles with shiny bit and flashy design and that's fine if you're just going to lease it and then get rid of it after 3 years. But for those like me who don't lease it's just not going to work. You cannot own a Mercedes, or most European brands for that matter, once the manufacturer's warranty expires unless you have money to burn and time on your hands to keep taking it to the dealer for repairs. Different people have their own definition of luxury. Some like all those flashy bits and sexy design as mentioned and some are just badge shoppers. But my definition of luxury has reliability on the top of my list as well and quality and comfort. Worry free driving is my kind of luxury. When I had my last Mercedes I kept wondering what is going to go wrong next.

    • @tmwei396
      @tmwei396 Před 4 lety +13

      @stephen stepanic Yes, I agree that taking good care of your care is important to maintain reliability but when I bought (not leased) my last Mercedes (2014 MY) I also purchased a 5-year service agreement. So every manufacture recommended service was performed on time and at the very dealership where I purchased the vehicle. I wish I could say the only times I've visited the service center was to have a routine service done but unfortunately that was not the case. I've had more unscheduled repair trips to the dealer than scheduled maintenance. Thankfully they were all under warranty but although they took care of me and gave me loaner cars each time I dropped off my car, I still have to take time to drop my car off and then later go pick it up. I don't know about anyone else but my time is very important to me. Again, this goes back to each individual's definition of luxury. Mine is not having to worry about all that.

      What model was, and what where the issues? Thanks!

    • @tmwei396
      @tmwei396 Před 4 lety +6

      @@ninotrivelli The last one I had was a 2014 CLA that I purchased in 2013. I was drawn by the looks and I ordered it with Premium package, multimedia package, sports package, Bi-Xenon LED package, Panoramic roof, and spoiler. It was beautiful. But after I bought it I started seeing the issues. The ride was horrible, the 7-speed dual clutch transmission was twitchy and just horrible, the gaps in the interior were huge, even for non-luxury brand standards, the Harmon Kardon sound system was mediocre at best, the interior noise was loud... and those aren't even what went wrong with the car later on. They were just how the car was made. Then I started having issues with one that nearly got me stranded when the engine started to over heat. I subscribed MBrace so I called them from the car but the connection was so bad I couldn't understand what they were saying so I called from my cell and had the car towed to my dealer. It was a faulty thermostat which was what I thought but while that was being fixed I did some research and found that this was a common problem due to poorly designed or spec'd out thermostat. When I got the car back I asked if they used the same thermostat or a newer version and all I got was a canned response saying they only use genuine Mercedes parts specified. That means it was the same old part that would only fail again. But the straw that broke the camel's back was when the car started running really rough. So I brought it in and they confirmed the roughness but for days couldn't figure out why. After a week they finally figured out it was bad engine mounts. It was so unusual for engine mounts for a car that new to go bad that they didn't even stock the parts so they had to order them from Germany. After all that I sold the car because if a long wearing item like engine mounts can go bad so quickly then what else is going to go bad? I fell prey to the flashy bits and sexy looks and I will never let that happen again. The car before that was an E-Class. It was recalled more times than I can remember and got rid of that after just 5 years.

    I leased a GLB 2 days ago. However I saw this video afterwards. I was surprised how you captured some of my thoughts exactly and why I went with the GLB. I had spent the entire day at a dealership hub in Chantilly, VA sitting in luxury small to mid size SUVs, narrowed down to test drive a few. I would have lost a bet that I would drive away with this. After my test drive though I was hooked. Mine is mid range priced around $44,500. The dealer had lease deals on the loaner models, less than 5k miles, which pricing was about $200 less per month. Yes please!

Other than that this is a great car . And a great "toy" and by toy i mean that it is a joy to own, to look at, to sit in . I opted for the 2wd because i hardly ever encounter snow where i live, and the consumption on average is around 18 to 20 km per liter . Cabin is super silent, yes i confirm seats are not perfect, a bit firm . But space is great inside, handling is nice and easy, gearbox makes sure the engine is always at it's best rpm . I have to say though that I am happy i leased it, because with all the technology that it has onboard , i would not like to be facing issues once the warranty will be over .

      The new FWD platform does seem like a big improvement. The previous CLA and GLA were pretty crappy, so the new vehicles are going to seem like an upgrade. I wish I liked the exterior styling better. It seems stuck halfway between friendly puppy and snarling pit bull.

    I drove a new a class with adaptive damper and was shocked at how well it rode in comfort. I'd almost compare the ride with an s class with airmatic minus the long wheelbase and it still handled great. Audi adaptive dampers on their smaller cars are kind of loud over bumps like they have blown shocks

    Great Review Mark - Great concise relevant insightful and balanced as always. Would love for you to get your hands on the new GLE - I haven't seen a competent review on the new GLE350/450 because everyone spends all their time making it bounce around with the 7K adjustable air ride function (which I think is only built for Dubai or Duluth). I think also that shortening the "In the Shoppe" segments is appropriate for these types of vehicles which are notably not built with driving enthusiasts in mind. And you're right - 7 inches does go along way. I agree with the comment below - I'd watch you review a toaster. I'd probably learn something:) Keep up the excellent channel - almost to 400K subscribers! Awesome!

    I like the part where the owner (Once out of warranty) pulls into the dealership for the $149 oil change special and is told it will be "extra" to clear the 17-fault codes along with the ABS sensor and bad PCM/Suspension/battery draw diagnostic light.

    Mercedes really hit a home run with this by offering a low price point and an optimal third row because it makes the Acura RDX and BMW X3 look a bit suboptimal and silly.

    Should have praised them for the best part, which is the upright tailgate. The here and now trend is to cut into the cargo area with a coupe style roofline. Mercedes really deserves praise for buckin that trend, and opting for the much more practical option.

    I really like the fact that you can hear the turbski doing its thing. Thats a rarity for modern turbocharged cars. I dont recall hearing that induction sound in the GLC300 I had for a loaner, but that was RWD based so I assume its manifold/drivetrain layout related.

    I'm a sucker for CUVs that are boxy and oriented toward storage and interior space rather than simply being a jacked up hatchback. If they make a GLB 35/45 AMG I might look in that direction.

    I just had retina surgery after having owned one of these. I claimed a warranty issue and was denied. If I can't drive it after eating a bucket or two of chicken, it's a no go for me. We do have a monkey just for door closure and it really works well. Nicely done. And frankly, for 50k, I want super uncomfortable seats so I want to get out and hit the lazyboy .

      Well maybe the Susuki Vitara though with low sales / parts etc... price is good though for a car you don't have to waorry about getting dinged by shopping trolleys in the mall car park or clearance at deeper caysewats on the way to camping. Seats are comfortable, decdnt external visibility and bare bones enough for me to outlay my own DIY aftermarket interior mods.
