Mercedes-Benz Active Body Control - ABC

  • In the autumn of 1999, the new CL Coupé (CL 500 and CL 600) from the C 215 series was available in the dealerships. The standard equipment of the new large Coupés included, among other things, an extensive safety package with different airbags. Another standard -- and at the time globally unique -- feature was the novel active suspension system, Active Body Control (ABC). It almost completely compensates for roll and pitching movements when starting off, cornering and braking.
ABC was originally introduced in the research vehicle C 112 back in 1991.

Bose system was only presented to the press in 2004, while the CL-Class went into production in 1999. Further, Mercedes introduced the technology back in 1991. Mercedes-Benz has continued to develop the system and is still in production today.

In defense of Mercedes benz. I find this system to be well constructed and durable. the issues to me are some of the sensor location. In the R230 one sensor requires the removal of front passenger seat and carpet and YES even Stars has miss located the sensor under the passenger seat as being on the left transmission tunnel. System pressure is very high 190 bars [ ie. 190 bars X 14.5 psi =2755 PSI ] at those pressures dirt will compromise the sealing of the system O rings

Yes, but personally, and I assume for most people, it does not matter the age of your product or design. What truly matters is this: is your product the absolute best? Does you product preform on par or better than the Bose? That is what people want to know.

The main pump is controlled by pulsed electronic signals from the ABC module but the responsiveness of the system is enhanced by the main accumulator that provides adequate pressure stabilization despite pump fluctuations and demand spikes. Also front and aft pressure dampers that look like cannon balls provide ride integrity. Flushing of the system is needed periodically together with the [ rodeo ] exercise.

ABC is actually better sir. (Ive had multiple of both). The ABC needs its hydro fluid flushed once every now and then, and once in the lifetime of the car might need a new pump. The Airmatic fails sooner and is thousands for each of the four corners of the vehicle

POD is right! ABC was developed in time, when the electronics were not that reliable, but very costly. Car companies were competing who will come out with the latest gadget on the market..,and in few years we saw introduction of ESP,ABC,TCS,BAS,DSC and many, many more.. I used to have Mitsubishi Galant from 1992 with ECS (Electronic Controlled Suspension) The car was 20 years old and the system was still the original, never repaired or replaced, and the car had 370 000 km!!! So my question to Mercedes is...how it is possible a system similar to ABC,but with less sensors to work flawlessly 20 years and still works, and premium car maker as you are cant make something even close to it???!! My brother in law purchased S-klasse 400 CDI 2002 with ABC and in just 77 000 km went down on its "belly"??!! Should you guys maybe take some lessons of reliability from Mitsubishi,Lexus or Honda??!! Cause we dont need systems and inventions that work perfect just on paper and videos like these.Thank you.

All the abc horror stories you hear are either from people who don't own abc cars or people who buy old beat up and not properly maintained cars for under 10k. If properly maintained and cared for it will last a long long time and the ride quality is unmatched.

The single most stupidest thing that Mercedes could ever come up with. Citroen has been making this SHIT of a suspension system since the 50-ies with its never ending oil leaks, overall system fails - steering brakes clutch and suspension . Did they not do any research at all before introducing this stupid system. I mean what is wrong with simple airbag suspension or something like BMW dynamic drive, that thing seems to be more trouble free on my E60

Mercedes uses airmatic but Mercedes also invests in engineering principles to give more options to the customer. If you can't afford to maintain a luxury car you can't afford the luxury car and should sell it. The space shuttle (SL) needs more maintenance than a Cessna (E60).

The other systems I mentioned before can get pricey for someone who’s not a millionaire but to repair ABC can easily go up to half of what the car is worth or more depending on the model.
And correct me if I am wrong but none of the fancy , crazy handling, super, track etc etc cars use that type of suspension. Special design and electromagnetic components is what car makers use these days isn’t it ?
