Betting Exchanges first surfaced in the early 2000s, the idea and concept were for them to work in a similar way to financial stock markets. Not only did you have to ability to place back bets just as you could with conventional bookmakers, but betting exchanges also give people the opportunity to place lay bets.
Nowadays in 2021, there are various large exchanges open to the public such as the Betfair Exchange and Smarkets.
There is a wide range of people active on betting exchanges such as sports traders, people who are matched betting and value bettors.
Unlike bookmakers, who apply a margin on their odds which makes them poor value to bet on, betting exchanges have no reason to apply such margins as customers bet amongst each other with back and lay bets and are charged a commission on net winning positions by Betfair.

I tryed backing at the current price (blue square one) below the market liquidity and it said bet unmatched. I did it pre-match, does it only matches when the event starts? Bcs I didn’t understood why it didn’t get matched

So this is purely for matched betting or do you punt/trade exchanges for profit ? And if so what sports ? Maybe do a live stream during a decent Saturday of racing or football ?

Personally I use exchange’s mostly for matched betting, but I also do some trading on them too mostly on horse racing markets.
I thought this video would be good idea to give people who watch this vid (mostly matched bettors) and overview of how exchanges actually function outside of our world of laying bets in matched betting.

Good question Lilian,
Exchanges dont ban winning players because their business model is to charge people with winning bets a small commission, so they don't mind who wins and loses on the exchange. This is different to how the bookmakers do things as if your winning they are losing and that's something they don't like
