    The Lady Gaga / Beyonce method is a big sign the vocals are live. When the choreography is timed to the lyrics rather than the rhythm there's a good sign the choreo was designed with singing in mind (and it massively improves the performance) hence why they are the gold standard. I noticed KPOP artists focus almost entirely on Choreo and anthemic choruses and could benefit from better planning.

    YG is pretty smart on making music for Black Pink in the way they can utilize both live singing and dancing. One trick they usually do is to: instrumental choruses. They don't usually sing a lot in the choruses and choruses r parts where their choreographies r harder. During verses, when they actually sing way more, the choreography became slower and less exhausting.
    On the contrary, JYP is the dumbest company in this case. They literally milk Twice like dead cows. These girls literally jumps and dance from beginning to the end while their songs r effing challenging to sing.

    People already mentioned the Beyonce/Gaga method of lyrical choreography, so I just wanted to mention that singing is an incredibly physical activity. Proper support that creates the most optimal sound - and thus is the healthiest - requires engagement from muscles throughout the body to take the stress off of the vocal cords. A lot of people don't understand just how important the hips, legs, ribs, as well as the diaphragm are in singing.
    That's why it frustrates me when I see people criticise singers who don't do crazy choreography when they're singing difficult phrases. I'm seeing this criticism directed towards Hyolyn on Queendom 2 a lot. "She just stands when she sings her high notes" but this standing position, with grounded legs, and upright posture, is the best way to sing difficult passages. I wish people understood this more.
    Choreography is fun, but don't expect to get good, complex vocal phrases whilst doing high kicks in the air. It'll naturally disrupt the airflow, weaken the support, and produce an unstable, unhealthy sound. If people understood this they'd be less defensive about accepting that many groups lip sync in order to convey their complicated choreography.

      It's funny that people say they are not good dancers while somehow no one says that about Blackpink who dance WORSE while also singing much worse. I'd take Mamamoo's "bad" dancing over Blackpink's average any day. Somehow BP are not considered a group that doesn't focus on dancing but they almost never give their 100% (they usually give like 40). So it is strange to read that Mamamoo are not dance-focuced (while this is true) when they perform better than BP (who supposedly are focused on dance).

    When it comes to live performances and stage presence I go to Mamamoo, Dream Catcher and Itzy. I know most of the time to expect to hear their actual vocals with maybe some backing vocals. But in talking about Mamamoo and their "easy" choreography, they started off as purely a vocal performance group and kinda lost that aspect to be more dance focused (HIP and Dinga Dinga). But With AYA we saw them coming back to their roots of showing off their vocals (Solar and Wheein) while also having medium leveled choreography. People downplay Mamamoo for their choreography but as a GROUP, they are THE top currently and are respected for it. Whereas Dream Catcher has powerful choreography and also powerful vocals, they truly are a gem among other Kpop acts.

      "faith". the reason many stick to using a pre recorded track or sometimes the original studio recording isn't because they don't believe in their idols. but because it's just an easier way at making everything seem perfect so that everyone can be paid. specifically, idols are often asked to do the impossible so lipping is a form of health and safety. sometimes what matters is how a performance can be edited together which means live vocals can be an issue. and companys aren't necessarily preparing idols well enough to be able to consistently carry out these things, nor are alot of idols interested in finding coaches themselves. kpop is focused on performance and visuals, catchy music. it asks for alot of showy, so it cannot always be authentic. music shows are filmed multiple times aswell, you want an idols to go full out for multiple takes and then carry on the rest of their schedule? they'd get sick and then they'd have to take a break and that loses everyone money. there needs to be some kind of balance. we have similar issues here in the west but the pressure may not be as bad as the industry is bigger here which makes for more room in everything. artists in the west also aren't asked to comeback several times a year either, many kpop groups have several album releases that are all fully promoted and since kpop is from korea they just fly out to promote in the west and learn the language etc. american artists don't have to go anywhere unless they're touring or you now whatever circumstance. pocs will always have to work harder. both male and female idols have to be more or less equal. while that's not how america views performers. female artists have to be the best while male artists can do whatever. this is a rant k bye

    I believe red velvet is a good example of dancing and singing at the same time.. even though their choreographies are not THAT difficult, it is usual for their choreography to have many jumps and runs/changes of formations which can tire the artist and even when they sing live they always manage to deliver a good vocal (with imperfections of course) but still great vocals. I know they don't usually sing live ALL the time but that doesn't discredit their determination when they do!

  • @ReapTheWhirlwind
    @ReapTheWhirlwind Před 2 lety +120

    ITZY sounds pretty good live and I don't know why people love to take shots at them all the time. One factor in how good a group sounds live is number of members and it's something that cannot be ignored. ITZY has 5 members and 6 is really the smallest number of members you want if you want even mildly impressive choreography while maintaining vocal stability. 7 is really the golden number and many of the top groups have 7 members. 7 members means you can create beautiful pictures with just the group AND do all kinds of vocal soundscapes that a smaller and/or less skilled group will struggle with.
    Dreamcatcher is without a doubt the best 3rd gen girl group in terms of vocal performance while dancing at a high intensity and the fact that there 7 members is big factor. They've been doing this for 5 years(Handong & Gahyeon) and 8 years(JiU, SuA, Siyeon, Yoohyeon, and Dami) and their choreographer incorporates moments for the vocalists to go off that will aid in stability. Siyeon, the main vocalist, has many moments of standing off to the side for a belt or high note and no one ever tries to say she's a bad dancer because of that. In their most recent comeback, Maison, the bridge requires the members to drop to the floor...but JiU, who sings it, kneels instead of being almost prone like the other members. It looks amazing and JiU is able to sing clearly and without strain. I would also like to shout out SuA's, the main dancer, amazing vocal stability because she can be in almost any position and sound like she's standing still. Dreamcatcher also has a more fair line distribution and a better distribution of killing moments in the choreo because there are 7 members. You have to balance what members are going to do vocally with the demands of the choreo and it gets messy with smaller groups.

    What’s even more impressive about some of the girl groups you mentioned like black pink, red velvet and itzy is that they only have 4-5 members meaning that each member has a much larger chunk of singing to do than in groups with 7-11 members. You can see that the groups with more members usually distribute the lines so that each member gets a ‘break’ in between lines to focus on just the dance and vice versa (unless they have unequal line distribution and rely too heavily on one or two members).
    It really makes me respect people like Jongho from ATEEZ who will always deliver an amazing live performance belting over the backing track despite extremely intense and difficult choreography. However, to do this you can tell that he generally doesn’t dance as hard as the other members so that he can focus all of his energy on singing. While there is no doubt that he is an amazing dancer, his vocals are out of this world and add so much more to their live performances - it doesn’t matter so much anyway when all of the other members are such good dancers that they draw the visual attention while Jongho draws the auditory attention.

    Aespa choreo seemed easy but its not(except next level) in Savage the chorus part, your lower body area needs full control and the fact that theyre doing it while singing live is commendable. Black Mamba is also energy consuming aswell yet the girls remain stable and sounded good.
    Aespa dances might less be challenging but what makes their songs hard to perform is the multiple sustaining of notes, their songs are vocal suicides and the fact that 2ning and Winter despite flatness and cracks they still able to hit it right. And that is why Kudos to them! Also they outdid themselves in Coachella!

And blackpink is my fav group , but live.vocals are more in their concerts and covers. In musis shows since their popularity jump after dududu its mostly loud backing track. Their old preformances in muaic shows were much better in terms of lives vocals. Cant blame them thow, the entire scene is always ready to hate them now becouse of how big they are. One of my favorite examples is red velvets live performance of Hit That Drum. Wendy has a very long belt in the bridge and in the studio version she pulls it off with ease (its very much in her range) but in the live version, you can hear her take a very large breath in between the note since they had been singing and performing several of their songs in a row and they were likely out of breath. THAT is what performing live sounds like. THAT is a well trained professional K-Pop idol vocalist.

      I literally saw Twice live in February. They sang live almost the entire time. Jihyo absolutely did as you can hear her vocal fatigue towards the end of the concert performances esp during the encores. I saw Dreamcatcher live in 2019 and my god. Their vocals are absolutely insane while slaying the dancing. Also saw Exo live both times they toured state side and they also sang live the entire time as well. Ateez also sings live most of the time as well. During really dance heavy parts they use backtrack for sure but for the most part it’s live, all of Jongho’s high notes are live.
      I love that Blackpink are so honest about what’s live and what’s backtrack. I also love artists like StayC who sing live 99.9% of the time as well. I miss the days when SM artists all sang live and had a blast performing, its so weird to see artists like Taeyeon and SHINee lip syncing. But then again its completely unrealistic to expect them to deliver hard choreo that the industry seems to be demanding more and more these days and sing live. But on the reverse side, so many artists do rely so heavily on back track and lip sync that when many idols do sing live they’re criticized for not having perfect vocals. Then again I feel like once idols leave Korea to tour outside their mics are turned on. The rest of the world doesn’t care about perfection like Korea does.

  • @raaid22
    @raaid22 Před 2 lety +5

    It's definitely possible to sing full out and dance full out at the same time and still sound good. Musical theater actors do it all the time. From my own experience, its not dancing that makes singing hard, it's the kind of singing and the kind of dancing. Heavy Bouncing or head movements make your voice wobbly so movements should be more grounded. It's difficult to have long legato lines of singing while dancing so staccato lines work better.
    "America" in westside story is a great example of stacco lines that make dancing and singing easier.

    Lots of companies are getting better and smarter at crafting backing tracks as well, and it’s why a lot of the MR removed videos and fans fall for the backing track thinking that it’s live. Backing tracks now are rarely the studio vocals and that’s what a lot of people think of when they think of lip syncing. Artists re-record raw vocals that are recorded while still (to give them the stable quality) and are edited very little to make it seem like live, more realistic vocal delivery. Sometimes certain parts (especially group choruses) are lowered in volume to make it obvious that part is lip synced (even if the whole song is). Also, a sign of lip synced vocals used to be that idols would be wearing face mics but had no mic pac on their outfit. But too many people saw through that so all idols now go on stage with mic pacs no matter if they are live or not.
    I recently saw a group (I can’t remember who it was, sorry) who actually stacked the studio version and another recorded vocal track on top of each other. One track was ever so slightly delayed which mimicked delayed vocal timing which can happen when groups sing live, but the group was actually still lip syncing. It was really fascinating actually. But the tell-tale signs were all still there, which is that facial expressions were flat, consonants like p, t, and s were smooth and not poppy, members hitting high notes turned their face away from the camera (you know the move, with the hand up in the air), and the audio across multiple stages was the exact same.
