- Maine has been one of the top destinations for Brook Trout for over a century and with good reason. The rivers and lakes of the state offer some outstanding fly fishing opportunities for anglers. Mike Melnyk visits Chandlers Lake Camps & Lodge to experience both spring river fishing for Brook Trout and also summer lake Hex hatch dry fly action! Lots of great information and details on this beautiful state and the outstanding services provided by Chandlers Lake Camps & Lodge.

Can't wait to hit the streams this spring! I'm also a Maine native and absolutely adore the pristine nature we have here. Wouldn't have it any other way :)
Born and raised in maine and i learned tying classic carrie steven flies and i love how these traditional flies still are the best way to crush big wild brookies. Chandler is awesome but it barely scratches some of the other places that are found up there.
Maine native here! There isnt any better feeling then hooking up on a brookie with a good fly rod
Love this episode... have already watched it three times and will watch it many more. Thank you for a escape from these tough times in which we live!
These tough times😂
As a local that fly is definitely one of our top secrets along with the one named after a common dog breed! 😁
lol....they use that same "dog fly" in Labrador for Brook Trout. Wicked!
@@newflyfisher it’s always nice seeing the videos of y’all up here on the northeast. Hope to see you all out on the water this season maybe!
Lots of familiar water!
I’m from northern Maine live right next to the aroostook river and In the spring I’ve hauled some 24 inchers out of there love it
You from Washburn Me?
Your spoiling us. Another fantastic piece. Bucket list is growing.
Love that Stevens net!
Looks like a good time. Those remote brook trout ponds are pretty sweet. Looks like they took you to a fairly accessible pond. Those ponds usually make for a good day, and decent mix of stocked and wild trout. Venture out to the more remote bodies of water in Maine and you will see some large, wild brook trout.
ok bro lol
Im from Maine. Born and Raised. Hard to beat our Brook Trout
Just sent the link to my 23-year-old daughter - suggested as a daddy/daughter date! I live in Arizona, so I'm a little jealous...
Great idea, my daughter is 23 as well and my best fishing buddy. Take her on trips whenever I can, these are precious years we have with them!
Beautiful river and brook Trouts ! i'm really enjoy watching your fishing video. Thank you for the share of fishing experiences. Liked !
Mark awesome good for you and Tom 👍🇺🇸
This is my 22nd year fly fishing maine its hard to beat period
Good Luck to all on the water for 2020👍👍🇺🇸
The Great State of Maine
Thank you The Vermonter
Beautiful footage, location and info. The one thing I never agree with though is “the secret pattern” or “the secret bait”. If you come to my area or I’m filming for whatever reason, I’ll tell you exactly what works, why it works, what to look for and where to go. What does it worry me? I’ve been stalking these same waters for over thirty years. A hundred guys could roll through with the same patterns I use and it would still be productive. The more transparency the better, imo.
great video guys --Mark and Tom as always you guys are the best
Thanks again!
Happy birthday Tom! Hello from western Maine.
Nice video Mike 👍 🎣🎣
Great job love the new graphics
Tom, you've been fishing for a hundred years and you damn well oughta have a barbless hook and a sturdy hemostat to remove the hook and keep the 'pretty brook trout ' alive and healthy.
OK I've now got two lifetimes of bucket list places to fish from you guys. Any ideas on how I should narrow them down?
Lol, sorry we don't have a solution...on than start right away!
Fly fishing is fun but I'd rather use a lure or bait and something with a hint of orange but you gotta hit the native waters or compete with everyone for the stocked fish and be out there early if you want a monster
8:49 Folks, a fish doesn't short-strike something if the hook is _that_ close to the tail. The trout much more likely bit the head of the fly and you set the hook too hard and failed to hook the fish. Strip-set the hook, don't yank the rod.
Gray ghost is a streamer, not a wet fly.
How hard is it to de-barb your hooks, especially before filming at least a partly educational video?
Just squash the barb down with your hemostats. If you don’t have hemostats, buy a pair. Indispensable. Oops. Sorry. I misunderstood your comment for a question. 🤷🏼♂️
Or don't smash them and continue to release trout safely, as you did in this video, after landing them with a barb.
🔥
New Brunswick nothing yet few nice days
sure it will happen soon
Grey Ghost is not a wet fly, it's a streamer..... Im not a nancy either, just saying. Ive sold my Carrie Stevens Style streamer on Ebay for up to $77.99. It just drives me up a wall, to talk about the pinnacle streamer and call it a wet fly... Featherwings go on the wall for display, marabou wing goes in the water to catch fish :) Also caught big brookies on Black Ghost marabou on First Roach. Wish I could shoot videos like these but I will get there. Tight lines!!
My goal is to be on one of these videos lol
Same here. I can be paid to go fly fishing in cool places for cool fish? sounds like a dream
Okay what is the top secret smelt fly?
Sorry, Tom won't say!
You mention a twin nymph rig fished on the bottom. What patterns are you using?
the fly my be secret but its no secret you don't de-barb your hooks
Yeah, I thought Maine required barbless hooks
Strange "take" on mayfly v. caddies takes. I've had far more violent takes on caddis than mayfly especially in later summer, especially on a skitter. Might be a symptom of freestone vs. other streams?
Hey you guys do beautiful videos, I love your videos, you really catch some beautiful trouts. been following you since some long. You guys inspired me and I started a CZcams channel, I am based in the other part of world in North India based in Himalayas, Place known as Kashmir, I hope you would have heard about it. We get one of the best rivers to fish, Kashmir Also known as the paradise on earth. I am trying to show the world about our streams & trouts we have. Hopefully you would love it. Thanks 😊.
I've been to Kashmir before. Beautiful country out there. Too bad its getting destroyed in a war. I would love to go back and trout fish one day. My favorite memory was staying on a houseboat, looking down and seeing hundreds of tiny fish, so much that the water was thick with them.
"trout" "out" is that a Canadian accent or is it northern?
Both!
What time of the year?
there were two shoots, one in the spring (end of May) and in July for the Hex hatch
Do you not fish without barbs?
Sometimes yes and sometimes no, we listen to what the guides recommend for most locations
@@newflyfisher Well, if you are going to release the catch barbless hooks should be your choice. That’s my opinion.
The quantity of commercials is truly disturbing. Totally disrupts the quality of the program.
The amount of lice is a bit concerning. We rarely see that up in the County.
You guys want to send me one of those orvis rods?
i agree with others. poor fish handling. no hemostats and driving your fingertips into a fishs face aggresively, in order to remove your hook is unacceptable
I'm from Maine. There's no fish here. Stay away;)
LOL....okay Jason, thanks for your feedback!
Jason is right. I’m from Maine too. Fishing sucks. Try New York or Pennsylvania 😢
I've lived in old town and fished all over the state...all you can pull is lil brookies and they taste funny cuz our waters dirty...better off heading to Montana or stick to our lobsters on the coast.
plot twist the secret bait is actually just a hook
he catches a 12 inch brook and then says the get alot bigger then he caught a 13 inch brook and said it doesnt get much better than that
What Jaime said. This guy doesn't know how to handle fish.
