  • This trip takes us to the Richardson Lakes, (Upper and Lower Richardson) in the Rangeley Lakes region of Western Maine. Starting at the South Arm on Lower Richardson, we spent 6 days working our way up the lake to Big Beaver Island on Upper Richardson and back down the lake to where we began. We explored different coves and campsites, encountered various weather conditions, spent time fishing and enjoyed each others company. All in we figure approximately 40 miles of paddling and a lot of good fun!
    This is a very nice lake to spend time on. There is a lot of history in this lake and surrounding area. Although motor boats do use this lake, the lake can offer quite a wilderness like experience. I am sure I will be back, as it is a lake worthy of returning to.

    Watching you do these trips is very motivating. Just a bit north and east of this lake is Camp Freedom, my snowmobile house. It’s about an hour car ride or less. Eustis and Stratton Maine are home to Flagstaff Lake. It has campsites that are part of The Great Northern Canoe Trail. The southern end of the lake is The Bigelow Preserve and mountains. The mountains go from 1100 foot base at the lake straight up to about 4000 ft peak. It’s right in your face. There are some sites on the north shore which should be a fantastic view. It’s a future goal of mine, you should investigate this place I think it might suit you. It has serious history too, Benedict Arnold!

    There is some really fascinating Maine logging history and many books written about those lakes and that area. Maine author Louise Dickinson Rich lived just through the woods there on the Rapid River.
    And kinda funny that I’m currently reading a book titled The Richardson Lakes. It’s a great book, I recommend.
    Thanks for another awesome video! A couple summers ago I stayed at Black Cat Brook campsite. Beautiful place.
    I’ve visited 29 states, and I’m so happy and fortunate to have been born in such a beautiful place. I love my state. Maine and New Hampshire have some of the most gorgeous landscapes in the country.

    Great Job Justin! That looked like a great time with great food and friends! By reading the comments below I figure that was Craig's brother or relative, will have to check his YT stuff out. Those loons are so fabulous to listen to at night! That wind was brutal! I am gun-shy of whitecaps after taking an early Spring swim not long after iceout. Good thing we were close to shore but it sure isn't a fun experience. Taking a swim on a Lake that big would be even worse. I am thinking about taking some rescue/self rescue classes to be better prepared for something I hope never happens. I am also hoping not to ever have a Bear experience, I do take a cooler with me but not all my eggs are in the same basket, I still use an Ursack and bear hang for essentials. One of these days a bear is going to happen. Looks like an awesome hammock, I have looked at those but ultimately decided to be able to switch out my insulation when I want for the appropriate temps. I see you could probably always add an additional UQ if temps get lower. 30 is a great temp to start with! Im hoping to head to the ADKs soon again! See you there! 🙂 Jeff

    • @ItsGoodintheWoods
      @ItsGoodintheWoods  Před 2 lety +1

      This was a fantastic time! Loons are such cool creatures! They really put a show on for us for pretty much the duration of the trip. That wind was nuts man. And those white caps,,oh boy. It was a pretty intense situation a few times for me. Not the first time I have encountered those conditions...I expect it wont be the last. So I figure it is just a matter of time before I end up going for a swim. Turns out all three of us were each thinking at one point, ..this could be it, just might be going for a swim.The experience in real time was much more intense than the camera lets on. A class or two is not a bad idea. I do have a lot to learn. I bet going in right after ice out was not a fun thing to experience.
      The hammock is awesome. 30 seems like a good place to start, but I wont lie, I would prefer 40. I was actually very surprised at how comfy I was in the 30 though. I though there was a good chance it would be too hot. It was not. I really like these hammocks. And you can easily add another under quilt to bring that rating down.
      I would like to get back to the ADK as well. It is so nice out there. Happy adventuring man!

    This is a year later but I have several questions. Love watching your trips by the way. I use these to help plan my trips. Where do you get detailed maps of campsite locations?
    Are they first come first served? Do folks share campsites?
    If someone is at your planned site do you plan in alternatives?
    Do you go through an outfitter?
    Oh, perhaps I just miss it but do you give a date ofyour trip?
    I have been to lake Richardson twice but not canoeing. I did not have bugs last week of august.

    • @ItsGoodintheWoods
      @ItsGoodintheWoods  Před 11 měsíci

      On this trip I didn't have a map, I was using a screen shot of my buddies map. This was a bit of a last minute trip for me. Unfortunately I don't have a map of the area. Sites are not first come first served. You reserve the sites, for a cost, at the South Arm Campground in Andover Maine. However, you do not need to pay for and reserve a site. They can be free use. But it is a gamble. If you are using a site without reservation, a paddler can show up whenever they do, if they reserved the site, you have to leave. Campsites are not shared, but some sites have several cells. Some do not. Each cell has its own campfire ring.
      This trip took place in early/mid June. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions feel free to reach out. I am happy to help as best I can.
