    Located along the rushing waters of the Hockanum River are the ruins of three dams, once used to harness and produce hydropower for a nearby paper mill. These dams were utilized by the Adams Mill in Manchester, Connecticut (as well as other mills nearby, during and after), which was founded by Peter C. Adams in 1863. Between the mid-1860s and the 1880s, Adams would focus on growing his paper mill, increasing operations and consistently adding new buildings to the complex. The Adams Mill manufactured high-quality paper, a product which was frequently used by famous 19th century author Mark Twain (who lived in nearby Hartford at the time). Due to the Adams Mill's increasing operations, there was a serious need for power to run the mills; thus, several dams and hydropower stations were constructed along the Hockanum River. These dams, many of which were built in the mid-to-late 19th century, were often made of red sandstone. The latest dam and hydropower station on the property, however, was actually constructed by the E.E. Hilliard Company in 1907. These dams operated for many years, but faced several hardships: a major flood in 1869 damaged many of the dams, and the Great New England Hurricane of 1938 all but destroyed the most recent of the dams. Following the closure of the Adams Mill shortly after Peter C. Adams’ death in 1896, the dams fell into ruin and neglect.
    To access these abandoned dams, one must take the public Adams Mill Trail in Manchester, located right next to the Elicit Brewing Company-a brewery which now occupies one of the former Adams Mill buildings. As mentioned, this trail is fully open to the public, meaning that anyone can enjoy these fascinating pieces of history! There are three total dams to explore: the first is located right nearby the trailhead, and has been partially incorporated into the Adams Mill Trail itself. Then there are two other dams fully abandoned and unused, which the most recent one still containing a brick hydropower station. These dams were absolutely amazing to explore up close, and it was also a treat to see the former Adams Mill buildings now in use! I’d highly recommend any casual urban explorer to check out the old, abandoned Adams Mill dams-they are an obscure, yet pivotal piece of Connecticut’s industrial history! whoa jmass, that last dam o thought was the best, by far. did you see the water turbine shaft coming out of the rubble. that is the power source, turning weight of water to torque. boy to think that the turbine is still there. the powerhouse is missing the dynamo and turbine. it appears that you walked though the area where the water would have gone. the turbine was below and the dynamo on the upper level. wow and thank you.

    Awesome video JMASS! I think the lower level is where the water was. A turbine would have been down there and that is what the hole is. The generator was upstairs and the water was below.

    I went and checked this place out, very cool to see in person! The tunnel was very muddy inside so I didn’t go all the way in but still cool. 😎

    Nice to see another spot in Manchester. The other massive mill in Manchester looks to have been blocked off as of last week or so. Kinda bummed about it.

    My question has nothing to do with the video but why do we never see animals when we go into the woods???? Where are they???

    • @j-mass
      @j-mass  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I think they just tend to be scared of humans lol… I’ve only encountered wild animals in the woods a handful of times.
