We nearly wrecked a brand new Lada Niva!

- If you've not seen our full Niva ‘Launch’ review yet (link below), then please do; however, we couldn't resist pulling out what some might say are the 'best bits' for a bonus (mini) film. Including some ‘new’ very badly shot phone footage (by Mrs CarPervert) of Jonny quite literally fixing the mess he got himself into. Mrs CP had filmed the footage on a whim and not with a view of putting it on CZcams, but you've all asked to see some 'fixing footage', so this is the best we can do.
The brand new 2021 Lada Niva Legend 4x4 is just as hard to kill as the Niva born to the Soviet world in 1977, but better made. Jonny inadvertently put the Niva's reputation of invincibility to the test during the exclusive UK test drive. All was going just fine until he encountered what we now know is a fairly unfriendly puddle in the Tixover quarry offroad course. No cones or signs mentioned that what he presumed was a shallow slip way, was in fact a huge step that had claimed the lives of numerous mud pluggers. In fact, it had sunk a Unimog a few weeks previous. A UNIMOG.

Thanks for bringing this to us Jonny. In a world where it's hard to believe what we see on the internet, this arrives. Sorry you had to go through it but it's real and it's warts and all and I'm sure we all appreciate it👍

I never thought I'd live long enough to see someone apologize for filming in portrait. Gesture appreciated.

Now THIS is the kind of automotive reporting we all need
So happy that, despite Renault's taking over, Lada is keeping in line with their core values: rusting being one of the foremost.
it seems like prejudice- but our neighbour bought a new Lada (last model) and after 2 years both doors had rust holes like a 40 year old car in salt water.. weirdly only the doors seemed to be affected
@@olik136 workers at the power plant would erratically rustproof some of the car's panels. Same thing happened with FIAT for years. My 130 Coupe had a boot that was rusting while all other panels around it were fine.
This is the truth. People keep buying nivas, hunters, bukhankas and the build quality is horrible. The niva is like a Bentley compared to bukhanka. That thing leaks water from rain NEW. Everywhere.
Just think how pissed Chops would've been if it was the Jimny though. Great update vid and so nice of you to go to the effort of making sure it was back to box fresh. I'm sure there are journo's that wouldn't have bothered and influencers? forget about it.
Don’t even say it. Don’t even think it.
Ok, you know how to dip the headlights 😂
I don't think anybody can think this is staged.
I love the humble-ness of making sure it's looking it's best again before handing it back.
The beauty of a vehicle that can be disassembled and reassembled with a basic Husky socket set in a couple of hours. Personally, I rather think Mrs. CP's vertical video effect was apropos. 😂 Consequently, I like this little thing far more than I wanted to.
Your nervousness at nearly hitting the gate seems so cute the second time I watch this.
This was a far better advert for the Niva, than any standard boring test drive. Well done and actually shows another great feature of this classic.
well, now you found out why the tailgate release is in the inside
The ever conscientious Mr. Smith, great channel and love this follow up vid. I drove an old Niva years ago and it was great fun, I always thought that it would make a great second car. Thank you for putting this back into my thinking.

Hey Jonny, early in your channels life, I encouraged you too explore different types of videos. This is first video I’ve see where the presenter test drives the car, and them wrenches on it! Very well done indeed, lol! So good to see your channel continue to grow. Be well
New video format idea: Johnny breaks the car and has to repair the car in time for the manufacturer to collect it…. Comments on how easy it is to work on.
Now that's what I call a 'Test Drive'!
Or was it a test dive.
I can't honestly believe ppl thought you staged the whole drive in the deep end ....
It's a lada they make you do silly things 😜
Jonny takes the dipping the headlights’ test a tad too literally 😂
Well done Niva.
I am a Siberian, I had Niva, how many times it helped me out on the off-road terrain of Siberia, fishing, hunting. An excellent car for off-road driving, there is one drawback that rots quickly, if you modify the car for yourself, then this is a great car. And what British cars will be able to pass such a test drive, I am interested to write.

Johnny, I believe you just boosted the sales for this Niva!
Your delivery and style is to be applauded. Somehow with considerable ease you have convinced your whole audience that £20k for a Lada Nina is a better option than a secondhand Defender, remarkable. If CZcams ever falls over, we will know where to find you, keep them coming.
Ha, thanks Simon. I hope a few of you will buy a Niva, as it is a really charismatic thing. I should be on commission...
Quite the adventure and good to see the aftermath. I could hear the stress as you went in-depth on the latest smith and sniff. Thank God it came out fine without having to tow it to a specialty garage. I do figure there are a lot of worse cars to have that happen to.
Thanks for sharing the highs and the lows.
Hmmm, going through this, or being stuck in Frankfurt airport without a passport…. Hypothetical of course, no one would unlucky enough to suffer both in one lifetime, on that side of things.

Great work Jonny!
By far one of the best reviews of the Russian contemporary classic (sic!) I've ever seen, so thank you very much for your efforts. Had my first encounter with the Lada in 1989 when hitch-hiking through former Yugoslavia on my way to the Middle East, an unforgettable experience. And also the beginning of an eternal love affair: I should never forget the car again and now it's just a question of time (and some further domestic discussions as unfortunately the Lada's WAF is comparably low) before I get one.
To be fair Jonny, if you had to pick one of the cars you've driven recently to almost write off, this is probably the best one! Also, it did sound like you were trying to convince Mrs Smith of what a good car is was in preparation of having to buy it!
A bit easier than the Nevera to claim for.
@@TheLateBrakeShow there's potential for a comedy sketch there; "I said Nevera, not Niva... Hello?"

Just wondering what sort of initial reaction did mrs Car P have, when she heard what the mr Car P had done.

My brother had an original one back in the 90s. Brilliant machines. 🧡

Just brilliant as usual 🙂
Best new car review of 2021.
Some positives, I'm impressed by how simple it seems to be to make the Lada Niva basically brand new again.. I doubt you could fix a new Land Rover by yourself if it fell in a pond and drowned.
Top marks for the last frame!
Superb! How often is this sort of thing edited out! Great episode! LOVE IT!!!!!!
I WANT A LADA NIVA SO BADLY THAT I CAN’T EXPLAIN AND YOU CAN’T IMAGINE!!! 🤩

Great film, all credit to Jonny for fixing it up afterwards - top job. Any as tested by the late brake show decals in the future?...
I was feeling low as I accidentally broke a window at work today, and then I watched this.
Awesome content Jonny! Want one!
I like your spark plug tool. Never seen one like that before!
Lovely video. Now I want one… base spec of course
Love that Niva. Always wanted one.
Such a plucky little car and you do realise sales will go through the roof now people have seen this! And I love the honesty of yourself and the channel Jonny, because in reality life is not perfect or trouble free. It is almost unheard of now for mistakes like this to be aired, rather they are not mentioned and covered. This is real lifeand people appreciate real - we all make mistakes yet society now says we never make mistakes and we are perfect. Utter bull… great video, like the actual review. Really are such appealing cars.
The Lada Niva are a tough well made No Nonsense 4wd, and the grill on this one suits it.
I actually live just round the corner from Mark, the importer of these vehicles, I know him to say hello to. I've noticed he still has a NIVA on his front drive missing it's front registration plate! He is also a keen VW Beetle enthusiast. So I am sure you could have done a trade-in deal with your Beetle had things gone really badly. :)
Aha excellent! Good to see a good old disco saving the day
I’d love to see the Niva make a comeback in Brazil. I sure’d buy one! My dad had one in 89, and now i own a 2002 Defender. But no doubt i’d buy a Niva.

A road test just isn't thorough unless - at some point - the vehicle ends up arse-up Titanic style in a muddy pond - or at least crashed into a swimming pool. Great work Johnny - another riveting episode.

Hi Jonny, well done in getting the car back up and running, great vid . Regards mark disco 4 owner
Lovely looking car.
Friends of mine they got a Niva as a Family Car. On the Autobahn on their way to vacation, the timing chain cracked. They called the ADAC and he came and he got a timing chain in the back of his car so he pulled them to a safe spot and repaired it on the road. It took 3-4 hours to repair it. After that the Niva was repaired and they where going to their holiday trip.
Good idea with this follow-up, was wondering if it survived the 'dunking challenge'... Damned impressive showing being driven home 💯

The best content on YT at the moment. Would you ever consider going back to the Telly now? BTW Commenting from our electric car cafe account to help the algorithm gods.
They were very popular in Jamaica back in the 1980's and I've not seen one in years but their are a few Rivas around including one belonging to a neighbour which he brought back from England years ago and it's in immaculate condition.
Having listened to the S&S podcast first, I knew what was coming. It made watching the whole video really tantalising!! Jonny held it together well, I would have puked with worry 😬
At 14:50 I think that has got to be the smoothest car entry window down manoeuvre I have ever seen on camera
I wonder if they place the wiring up high like in the Jeep Wranglers, but even more impressive than the electrics holding up is that it actually took on water and didnt hydrolock! Stout little truck!
Surprised it got water in.
I made much the same mistake in my old landcruiser - drove into what looked like a shallow stream. It bloody well wasn't.
A wave broke over the bonnet & splashed up against the windscreen. Then water started to pour in around the steering column (seal subsequently replaced) .
After a shocked pause I kept going & came out the other side.
Had to take out the seats so I could remove the carpets for cleaning, drying.
Never mind the exhaust, it's the air intake you should worry about, and very lucky that the water didn't get too far past the air filter (although on the plus side you can get an engine for these for £400!) Glad to hear you got it running again. I don't want to put a damper on things (see what I did there?) but how were the electrics over the following days and weeks once the corrosion set in, did the anti corrosion treatment help? I wonder if the Niva could have made it though there with a snorkel fitted.
Lot's of hidden dangers if you don't know tixover, thank god you didn't go into the clay pit's cause you can easily be eaten up in there.
It made good content though.
I always avoid the clay pits Evan, but no one mentioned this was a hidden swimming pool in the wading area. I wasn't massively pleased as you can imagine.
