  • The Tudor Black Bay 54: What Reviewers DON'T SAY! I have owned my Tudor Black Bay 54 for 3 months now... And I have some thoughts! There are still a lot of things I love about this watch - I wear it A LOT! And a few new things I love and don't love have come to light after wearing this for a while. Here are some of the things reviewers DON'T say about the Tudor Black Bay 54: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

I have both the 54 and 58 and for me, the 54 is the perfect sized watch as I prefer thinner 36-38mm cases on my 6.5” wrist. I also love the 54’s more truly vintage look. That said, it doesn’t feel as sporty or “divery” as the 58. So for something more elegant and vintage, 54. For a more sporty presence, the 58.

Hoping they do the smaller version of the ranger in the next few years. The 54 is definitely on my list, with this smaller size, finishing, clasp, and movement.

Great informative video (as always) I have the bb58 in black and gilt, and I’m very pleased with it. My wrist size is 7 - 1/2” and sits perfectly. The bb54 is a good shout for the smaller wrists, and the differences are interesting between the two.
My personal preference is the 58.
    All the best from England.

Hi Britt, I really think there is room in your collection for both Tudors. And since you promised me you wouldn't sell it, gifting it to a nephew also sounds like a very groovy idea! Re: the 54 - I am looking forward to seeing one in person. It would be the chef's kiss with a red triangle (one of my favorite features of my beloved 58). Cheers!

That red bezel triangle on the black gilt dial BB58…I just love it so much! Just goes so well with that dial. I love it so much, I simply can’t consider any other Black-Bay that doesn’t have that combo. Not even other variations of the BB58 itself! And including this BB54. Just crazy stuff 😆 now Tudor just add that micro-adjust clasp. It’s well overdue! Thus perfection would ensue.

Great review, as usual. The 54 is really a great release. I've tried it on the wonderful rubber strap. While I ended up finding it a bit small for my 7.25" wrist and looking like a toy diver in a full mirror photo at the AD, it does wear bigger than 37mm would imply. I think for a lot of non-giants out there, it will be a nice compact wearing experience. I saw it on the wrist of an owner at Windup Chicago on a not quite as big wrist/person and it looked brilliant. I hope Tudor will add those refinements to the BB58 in the next year or two, especially T-fit. I implore people to go by more than specs and actually try on watches if possible. The same diameter watch can wear very differently. As for me, the Pelagos 39 wears like a great compact diver on my wrist, reminiscent of a vintage Sub, which I also tried on recently. If Tudor releases a blue Pelagos 39, I pity my wallet.

I love what Tudor has done for the watch-world by creating the 54 & 58. As the Submariner creeps to 41mm case sizes, thank god for a modern watch with a vintage look that you can actually get WET & knock around. 😅 🙏🏾

I purchased the BB54 for my birthday 2 months ago and have worn it every day since. Here are my two cents:
    - I have relatively thin wrists, and the size and weight are absolutely perfect for me.
    - No issues with pip alignment. It's exactly where it needs to be.
    - Lume is beautiful, but fades quicker than expected. Could be better but it's not a big issue.
    - Keeps very accurate time. Mine runs about +1-2 seconds per day.
    - The faux rivets aren't the best, but it's not a deal breaker. As Britt mentioned you barely notice them when wearing it.
And now for my all time favorite thing about this watch...the dial. It's advertised as black, but it's actually closer to a very dark, burnt brown. Like a black coffee almost. That with the gold hands and brown text really, REALLY makes this dial a one of a kind.

    • @watchpapi

    • @DodyChai
      @DodyChai Před 11 měsíci +2

When you said that the lume fades quicker, is it able to last you through the night?

    • @NA-yz2ek
      @NA-yz2ek Před 11 měsíci

@@DodyChai not really. I don't purposefully blast the lume with light before bed, so it glows with whatever ambient light it's managed to gather before I hit the hay for the night.
By the time I wake up, the lume has faded to a barely perceptible level.
I don't think it has to do with the quality of the lume, but rather to the size of the indices themselves. Given that it's a small dial, and the indices are relative to the overall size, there's simply not enough lume to go around.
That being said, I've never looked at the watch, be it during the day or at night, and were unable to tell the time.

Out of curiosity, i'm not sure if you ever mentioned it, but have you thought about going for a watch like an omega or longine? Or is your love for beefy watches too strong? I figure the smaller specs of vintage men's pieces might fit your wrist better hence the question.
    Keep up the great vids!

  • @seezyc158

Can I just say that your eye for real world detail is so thoughtful. Pip misalignment drives me crazy and I have had it with Rolexes, Blancpain and Omega - it’s unforgivable QC laziness! As for the BB54, it has its place on the right wrist, as do all the BBs which is what makes the sizing variety so great. But, it’s also a curse - Rolex do not accommodate so much which seems to generate a ‘respect’ and air of supremacy. As for the rivets, they are up there with non-functioning cuff buttons on a suit. It’s like you’re being chaperoned by mummy until you deserve a big boy watch one day with all functioning details. Lastly and said with kindness and respect, you don’t need to worry so much about being honest in your reviews; it’s refreshing and regardless you make your points diplomatically. Adrian might be gutted he missed what you spotted though! Keep it up!

Britt! Can't believe it's been 3 months, congrats. I still can't get past the bezel color silver not matching the gilt color of the dial. For me the 54 isn't vintagey looking enough lol. I feel that especially for summer, having such an adjustable clasp is really important and I wish more watches offered this regularly. I’ve always felt that the BB58 was chunky and two dimensional/bland (slabs of metal on the sides of the case). I resort the “modern” size aka larger BB58 being a result of Tudor’s ability (at that time obviously) as not being able to make a smaller/thinner complication. I really wanted their newer two tone gmt but couldn’t get over how thick the case was

Good review. I got turned onto Tudor by Teddy B with the Black Bay Burgundy METAS. I'm not into Divers as I think they are just too trendy and hipster-sh. But I'm digging this watch brand/model. I love the burgundy. Someone mentioned they put on a black/red RubberB strap on it for daily use. That would look super sharp and less blingy. Which is what I want for a daily driver.
Glad you included pictures of you and your husband's wrist with the watch and realized one thing: The case looks like it takes more space on his wrist. While his wrist may be bigger, it's probably a more rounded shape vs. rectangular like yours. So on his wrist, you don't see as much the band as much as on yours.
So yes, people should try on the watch before making judgements.
    Great video!

Thanks Gringa for the vid, always enjoyable! FWIW, I would recommend holding onto the BB39 for a bit longer. I have found that after many months go by, I can fall back in love with a watch I've neglected. And the blue is pretty special and it is different enough from the 37mm to make it feel unique. 🤷🏻 Thanks as always for the great content, very appreciated.

  • @solefreak2

My pip on the 54 is perfectly centre. What I have noticed though is the link that glides in/out of the t-fit clasp, there seems to be little rubbing marks on the finish on that particular link. Not sure if this is something I have done or if it came like this. Nothing major but enough for me to notice on my practically brand new watch.

Finally had a chance to try on the 54 and it wears fantastic…but I’m still keeping my 58. I still love the gilt bezel that gives the 58 a warm touch, red triangle gives a pop of color and pays homage to the Rolex Big Crown, the large coin edge crown with matching bezel makes it unique and the crown borrows the look of the Rolex Big Crown, and I love the snow flake seconds hand. It is so unique in design as opposed to the now more common lollipop. I have no doubt the 54 is going to cannibalize sales from the 58 because of its proportions, better clasp and more derivative looks, but I feel a lot of the design aesthetic that made the 58 different and cool have been taken away. I think if you want a vintage styled tool watch with a bezel then go with the 54. If you want a modern sized dive watch with vintage cues that is not an exact replica of past models, but has its own unique design then go 58.

The bezel problem u talk about is not a problem i do believe. Because there is a small lock system on the bezel when the triangel is positioned at the 12 o'clock marker. An before you get it into lock position it is a millimeter off. This is how it is and has nothing to do with quality control at Tudor.

Excellent review. Mine is perfectly aligned with 12 marker. I have owned Tudor smiley, Non smiley, 58 tudor and now 54. I find 54 the best because I have 6 and 3/4 inch wrist. Also what I have observed is 54 is much more scratch resistant than other black bays. Not sure if Tudor has played around with the alloy or something. However your’s is nice review and to the point.
