    In Crimes of the Future from body horror maestro David Cronenberg, humans adapt to a synthetic environment with new transformations and mutations. Performance artist Saul along with his partner Caprice act as celebrity performance artists, publicly showcasing the metamorphosis of his organs into the next stage of human evolution. We're breaking down the story, including what comers next for humanity in this environment, as well as looking at the story's symbolic meanings as well as explaining the ending.

    It really is interesting that this new evolution is seen as so 'inhuman' to the point of evidence of it developing naturally being covered up.
    Meanwhile, what is classified as 'human' is completely foreign to us, making the kid's death even more tragic.

    Just finished watching a amazing psychological horror! It’s called Rent-A-Pal! If you ever can’t think of a movie to do a ending explained on this one would be a good one!! It’s hard to figure if David is truely just schizophrenic or if Andy and the tape has something to do with his mental deterioration.

    Apparently, ‘Crimes of the Future’ was also the name of a movie Cronenberg wrote and directed back in 1970. There’s not much info on it, but from what I can find, it deals with completely different themes, though does still include a man who continually grows new organs which are then removed from his body.

Also, Wippet appears framed quite often, in a mirror at one point and by the frame of a shelving unit at another. Any thoughts on that? As though he is a work of art himself - but I can’t see how that would work with his character in the context of the movie… anyone got any thoughts?

    Seems like this movie is about how desensitized people have become to what was once considered abhorrent, or taboo. The constant escalation that people resort to in order to feel something. You see it on Instagram, and you definitely see it on TikTok with all the stupid challenges people do. People watch emotionally disturbing videos and feel nothing, so they must watch something depraved. It’s like drugs; each time you use it, you must have a stronger dose the next time because the original dose won’t have the same effect. The “evolution” these people are experiencing, is actually a metaphor of the de-evolution society is experiencing now. People are becoming so bizarre with the body modifications they do, are more devoid of humanity and emotion and are less and less able to interact like human beings, that they seem like something trying to imitate a human or you must question whether this person is human because of how they think or behave.

      I dissagree. Conventional humans fucked their planet in this movie and nature is trying to fix it by having people evolve to clean the planets cancer that was human civilization and waste. We numbed ourselves to hear the screams of the planet and we created the dystopia we see here. The planet is evolving its own "organs" and
      the humans are resisting and trying to suppress this attempt for the planet to heal. People are actively trying to suppress this new species as not "human" despite the only thing these people want to do is survive and live.

      As an infj i find it weird you cant empathize with the idea that mental health plays the primary role in people being deevolved or not and the younger generations are proven and studied to be more emotionally intelligent and empathetic than previous generations. Theyre not allowing toxic or negative views affect their life because they do not affect their mental health, they are breaking generational trauma that suppresses peoples ability to find their self identity and do what makes them feel the most fulfilled,. Getting piercings doesnt correlate with mental health but has been proven to be an acceptance of the lengths art can go to while not causing permanent harm or pain. The use of social medias has been proven to be more beneficial for society because of its access to information, poor communities are showing increasing rates of graduates because of their easier access to a world of information, kids can also find safety groups or sources for external health aid in families that are extremely dysfunctional and abusive, adults who have been so traumatized that they cant identify themselves have access to outside viewpoints and educational tools as well. If people are mentally healthy they wouldnt get addicted to medias as frequently and having access to the internet and factual data can help people learn to be mentally healthy or give them that access (as i already said). If you don’t understand these things then its likely that you were raised or are in a dynamic that doesnt treat you as an equal or like you matter enough to get mental help and youve just accepted a toxic and viewpoint putting opinions over fact because it became so normal to you. Hope you can step out of that! Its hard.

    • @mostmelon8243
      @mostmelon8243 Před rokem +24

      I think so. You'd just need to get creative.
      Like if body horror tied into the message of the story. Gruesome scenes could be depicted over and over to the point that the audience gets desensitized. Like the message could be something like, and I'm just spitballing here, when people see terrible things over and over again they can reach a point when they can no longer tell something is wrong or blah blah blah.

      Yeah, from what I understand this movie is getting a shit ton of walk outs, but the media made it seem like it wasn't so much because it wasn't being understood and way more to do with the disgusting portrayal of the body horror aspect of things. It sounds to me like it's way more the latter than anything to do with the gore, etc. Now I LOVE me some Cronenberg, but when I hear lines like "surgery is the new sex" I can't help but think maybe it's a bit too Cronenbergian for it's own good. Certain directors that become know for a certain thing, then move away from that thing and STILL manage to find success (A History of Violence and Eastern Promises which are both still absolutely fucking fantastic), and then return to the thing that initially made them famous, it always terrifies me that they're going to essentially beat you over the fucking head with their initial niche SOOOO hard and throw any sort of nuance to the wind, and that's exactly what I thought was happening here. He even pulled a name out that, if I got the story correct, was something he had attached to a COMPLETELY different tale he had written like 20 years ago, but he decided to use it here I can only assume because he thought it sounded cool which to me seems like a completely anti-Cronenbergian thing to do. But man, wtf do I know? Hahaha I'm literally watching a video of a movie explained to me by a third party because I can't be bothered to watch it for myself. So, who is the REAL douchebag here?🤔 Clearly me. The answer is me. 😂

      @@E_l_l_i_e That's true. Cronenberg deserves credit for fresh original story scripts. This film works as an experimental blend of sci-fi, ecology, environment, evolution, body horror, art and erotica. But he includes so much that the film as a whole ends up being less than the sum of its parts. Some great story concepts here but could have been much better with a tighter script.

    My impression about the ending: the artist (Viggo) evolved to become exactly what he initially disapproved: a "plastic consumer". Remember his performance centered on his organic capabilities, and initially he was rejecting exactly what his body became in the end... and here is the irony. 😂😂😂It was actually funny, I laughed out loud🖤loved it. Lots of symbolisms
