“Mark helped descend the curiosity rover and safely land on mars, but more importantly he owes me a favor” 😂
yea i died on that one too xD
I'm gonna say, the rover is so much bigger than I thought it was
+Gerald P Yeah, they really don't give you a good sense of scale in most of the videos... I figured it was about the size of a large dog...
+Gerald P Yeah I was quite surprised. I was kind of thinking "golf card". It was more like a volkswagon or hatchback. I wish I could have gotten into the mechanics of the wheels etc. There's so much to learn about it. I shot some video, but for the sake of not making a 30 minute video I decided to leave it out. Perhaps I'll upload it separately to the second channel.
+SmarterEveryDay That would be cool.
+SmarterEveryDay If you have more material, please do make it available. Even the raw footage would be incredibly interesting to see!
+SmarterEveryDay yes please!! I'd watch a 20-30 min Eppisode every day If I could
"Is this one of a kind?" *in a mysterious voice* "There is another."
"I nonchalantly have this super awesome 3D printed model showing exactly how this drill extracts samples on my desk if you're interested"
Destin: \(O 0 O)/ ! ! !
I still don't get how he 3d printed it transparent....
Willem Steege probably Resin 3D Printing
Dude, why don't you have your own TV show?! seriously you're part of the best CZcams has to offer, and thank you so much for all the hard work you do.
you make us all-
Smarter every day!
Because tv shows allow you 0% creativity. You only do something if the executives think it will make money. On the Internet Destin has total control of what he makes and when he makes it.
+Trygve Germo Which is why we love him :D. Still I feel like, should he ever get the chance, he should give something more official a try. He should just prioritize his creative freedom, because that's where most of his talent is.
The internet is the future of entertainment and kinda already is. Television has soooooo many flaws for so many reasons
unstopableguy1 Technically, as it is, more people still watch live TV and/or Netflix than CZcams or similar social media sites. Although that is changing, yeah. But just think of the exposure Destin would get? He might also get a higher budget and, potentially, a bigger bang for his buck. Like I said though, I feel like his creativity and childish interest in everything he talks about should be his priority, as that's one of his most appealing qualities.
+leif goodwin smarter everyday , veritasium and numberphile all together makes a good teeam
"I'm gonna let Meghan explain what they're for" proceeds to explain what they're for while Meghan goes "yep"
ALet338 So how did you have the scientist explain in in your video?
Adam Moore in not sure what youre asking?
He does that with every expert he talks to. They explain off camera and he summarizes. I can see the contradiction in how he said that she'd explain it and then she didn't, but it's a simple mistake with him forgetting the style of his own videos for a second. No big, really.
If you haven't noticed, Destin is a total control freak, even with his family.
Aswath Narayanan You know his family?
2:01 did you notice the smiley face on the hexagon?
Me
lol no i didn't
Lol
I think that’s the high gain antenna. Since it’s not needed on Earth, apparently someone had a little fun with it!
Destiny you have truly changed my life. Your attitude, your outlook toward life the way you look at everything and try to understand it amazes me. I will work everyday to have your education outlook on everything I see. But also the way you treat people with such kindness. I think I have watched every single video you have post and cannot wait till you post another video. Thank you for everything Destin. You are truly brilliant and make some many people “smarter everyday”.
The rover is way bigger than I thought it was.
Back when they launched it they said it was about the size of a mini cooper
Yes indeed, i never saw a picture of the rover with a reference (like a person). I kinda expected something of the size of Sojourner (the rover from Pathfinder Mark salvages in the Martian).
Beatiful piece of engineering.
Ayep! The pictures make it look small because there isn't anything you can really scale it to.
Most people think it's maybe the size of a desk, or a coffee table.
It's really fun to see peoples reactions when they realize it's actually the size of an SUV.
My favorite part is that NASA said JPL could not make a mould on the tires that would stamp JPL on the surface of Mars. JPL fixed this by writing JPL in Morse code on the tires.
adonis combustion doesnt work in a vaccuum jokes on you
In my opinion, the video could be an hour long and i would still be glued to the screen.
+ZeaMoore4 same here.
+ZeaMoore4 I know. Destin's like worried that we're going to hate a 10 minute video. Seriously I would totally watch the unedited full video of him nerding out with the computer stuff he was doing.
Yup
Totally
its not healthy you eyes uknow, have like a 30 cm or one foot gap between the monitor and your eyes. You should call a fire department or something to get the glue off :o
Geez. This blew me away! You are all so incredible & so young. I'm so impressed with what you can show us. Thanks to you and your team, new mates, etc.
1:54
He really didn't think in 5 years that would be the normal way of shaking hands😐
Wow, that video was surprisingly informing. I would've never guessed drilling could be this interesting hahaha
+Miguel Valdez lol
+Miguel Almeida Everything is interesting!!
Drilling is incredibly interesting. The mechanical processes and designing for drilling all depends on what you are trying to do.
Pulverizing the rock is perfect for analyzing the chemistry make up of the rock AND it happens to be the easiest way to but a hole in rock. But if you want to analyze the lithology and the geologic processes or drill a deeper hole, this method is insufficient.
+Kirt McKenna oh wow, really?
+Miguel Almeida Actually, it was really boring. ba dum tsh
It is amazing how complex we can make a procedure as simple as drilling into a rock. It actually, legitimately is. I want to meet the guy that designed that procedure, it's a thing of beauty and he needs more recognition.
+Teth47 It's an incredibly ingenious solution. It's a drill-meets-vacuum-cleaner with barely any moving parts that can go without maintenance for a really long time. By using gravity and the shaking of the drill (which is needed for drilling anyway) to move the dust around, you can pretty much guarantee that it cannot break down. If you can drill, you can move the dust around. It's such an elegant solution when you take a closer look.
chris ce Finding a simple solution for a complicated problem, that's the hard part. Care to elaborate how you would improve on it?
i genuinely love how excited all the people are about this and how genuine your enthusiasm is about all this. never change, dude.
I love how you geek out about stuff like I do. I actively try to learn something new every day. Thanks for your excellent videos!!
7:13 that "yeah", man.
This series is so awesome.
HIIII I'm a sub
+NightHawkInLight i just realized i forgot to subscribe to your channel *facepalm*
+KING_ MAGNETIC818 WHAT >:( . Go sub now!!
Thank you Ben! I'm a fan!
Rakesh Kumar i did already ^-^
I just got into your channel and I've been going through some of your older videos. This episode, for some reason, was one of the most facinating things I've watched in a while. I'm currently pursing my Engineering degree, haven't decided between Mechanical or something else. This makes me want to work in Space/Aerospace.
hey dude, im from the philippines and im a big fan of your channel, coz everytime i watch your video it seems like you really love what you're doing and also you are a loving father of 3, they should be proud they have a dad like you. hope you notice my comment :)
Lol NASA lookin low budget..... "behold the mars shed"
+JoshDoesEverything i bet the workers get very well payed
+JoshDoesEverything yeah but they still steal BILLIONS of funding off the tax payer.
take our BILLIONS, here is the SHED!.....
+lakisbouz Would you rather they spend billions on a giant facility and none on the actual advancement of human knowledge?
+Kenny Duran I think he was being sarcastic.
Walter Kuppens Got'cha, I felt it was rather well concealed though. Could've been either serious or sarcastic within reason.
You think the video is too long for an Internet video? 12 minutes is not long enough when the content is this entertaining and informative. Keep up the great work!
Yeah really....if TV were this good and people consumed it like they do all the other worthless content we might not be so bad off!
Also, you can speed it up by clicking on that gear icon and changing the play speed. If the speakers are articulate enough, as they are here, you have no problem hearing it in time saving speeds. 1.5 usually works for me.
@@wonderwolf303 i agreed with all you say here
@@wonderwolf303 TV is a tool to propagate propaganda and you welcome the lies you're told.
Most definitely not long especially when it’s a good video
Another neat video I enjoyed and learned a lot from. Good verse at the end too, thanks for sharing. You're truly awesome.
I love your's and mark's videos, always super interesting stuff. I always learn stuff from them and one of the few really genuinely positive people on youtube. Please keep making amazing videos man!
All that trouble and money designing and sending a fancy robot to Mars when they could have just sent Bruce Willis with a power drill and a dustpan and brush. I don't know what these NASA jokers are up to.
+TechnoSquidgy looooooooooooooooooooooool
TechnoSquidgy or Matt Damon
Willis would then plant a nuke and blow Mars to bits ... saving the World? .. from doing science there, lol.
And then spend billions rescuing him after he blows himself up? No thanks.
@@gcm_uk do you mean Ben Affleck?
that red highlighting thing was AWESOME!
DUDE!! I can't believe this video is over four and a half years old, and this is the first time I've seen it! haha! Epic. Love your videos, brother.
yes
"I'm going to let Megan explain".... Proceeds to talk himself instead.
all the hard work You do to get us closer to what is interesting - amazing - thumbs up, keep it going!
He owes him a bunch of favors and the man asks about a drill... out of all things.
I know I’m wrong but, your username is awesome.
HOLY FRENCH TOAST
i thought the rover was alot smaller
Yea, that was one of the major achievements of the Curiosity mission; landing a 2000 lb car-sized robotic vehicle on another planet, the biggest ever. I watched the stream of the landing from JPL. It was one of the most exciting things I've ever seen.
oh yea didnt some guy working there get in trouble for a shirt he wore
+Neil Crandall (DJRaVeS) That was a guy from the European Space Agency working on the Rosetta mission that landed a probe on a comet. And yea, some disgusting radical feminists decided to attack him for wearing a shirt someone (a woman) made for him.
guess i need to do my research
but thankyou
i love this space push all of a sudden from media
+Perforator2000 Not to mention that the woman who designed his shirt is actually his wife IIRC.
Thanks, Destyn. Fascinating as ever. You always find the most interesting subject matter.
So facinating. What an amazing video. LOVE what you're doing. Keep it coming!!!
Hey Destin, excellent video, but now that you told us you went haywire around the rover, I kind of wanna watch that material as well. Would you consider releasing all the extra footage you have under a separate video?
Thanks for everything, your videos add meaning and hope to my life.
Yes
Awesome, thank you!
I see it now. 😶😄
+Boris Svetiev It was his clever way of showing you the channel that has those videos in case you didn't notice.
1:58 did someone draw a smiley face on curiosity?
Where?
Death Overlord in the bottom right of the screen, looks like dust
+Kaleb Bruwer oh ya lol at 1:59 his hands in the way at 1:58 XD
Good catch Kaleb!
Yes.
I love your videos! Have seen every one as far as I know. Thank you for making me Smarter Everyday! (More like a few days a week in small binges.) At times you actually make me feel dumb! Which is awesome b/c research ensues and I learn even more than what the video intended. Thank you! This channel truly is a public service and worth as much as any college course I've paid thousands of dollars for. Your life seems awesome!
I really like your reference to Psalm 8:3-4. That’s my favorite psalm and cleverly applied here. I love it
So whats the drillbit made of? Tungsten Carbide? Diamond? Nokia 3210?
+Internetspaceships The tip of the bit is tungsten carbide. In hardness, it's somewhere between the Nokia and diamond ;)
+Internetspaceships Nokia XD the old phone that always could.
+Video Olympics when things are too strong to break, its always made up of nokia 3210
+Ryan Kinnett
I imagine much debate went into the drill-bit design characteristics...with an emphasis on weight, and tungsten is heavy.
Is the bit itself (cutting tip only):
SOLID carbide?
...because to me, it looks just like a masonry bit for concrete but at such a weight cost! I'm sure plating atop lighter, yet stiff materials was also an option for a cutting edge...(I sure would have liked to be a fly on the wall during that phase of design discussion)
XD
That rendition of the Hokey Pokey makes you the most colossal nerd in existence, and I loved it!
Thank you so much, Destin for being one of the highlights of my CZcams subscription box. I'd love to move to the U.S. and work for NASA, even though that's probably not gonna happen due to the whole export control issue thing. They've inspired me since I was a child, and I'm now an Aerospace Engineer for it. Your space videos are a constant reminder to me that NASA continues to inspire and do amazing things, despite funding shortfalls and often public indifference
You are SO good at explaining things, and so genuinely fascinated by the things you make videos about. Awesome. :)
I just found this video 3 yrs and 3 months late. How can there possibly be 926 dislikes?! This is one of the most interesting Smarter Every Day episodes! And that's saying something! Thanks Destin!
it makes me really sad people think this rover is fake
They will just never experience the literal wonderment and awe we experience.
+I'vebeenquantumsomegaming me too.
rationalmartian sadly, yes...there was one guy complaining about how it doesn't use a LASER DRILL, of all things
chris ce evidence?
chris ce oooor maybe Destin is a person of the opinion that they're not fake
After about, "you put the drill bit . . . " I got a sense of it, and then had a belly-laugh. You just about lost it at " . . . you do the mass transfer . . . ". Very nice! I like, very much, hearing from the Gray-Matter that make these things happen. Cheers, Mark
PS: How many takes to get the hokey pokey sequence?
+Mark Beeunas 2
+SmarterEveryDay wow you are lucky. I would love to be there
+Ryan Z Destin makes his own luck. He works like crazy, studies even harder, and balances that with all kinds of wholesome play and recreation. He's got it together.
+briansmobile1 ok wonderful I was just complimenting the channel and all the things he gets to do. I wasn't saying he is a lazy slob. So way to take a good comment and ruin it.
Well I think both *‘briansmobile1’* and *‘Ryan Z’* got it right in different ways. Lucky events can fall upon one from time to time out of the blue. Though the most rewarding of ‘lucks’ can be those you make for yourself and there is a definition of this kind of luck: “When Preparation Meets Opportunity”. But these self-made ‘lucks’ are different for everyone in degree and path. My path was geology and it took me to many amazing locations and I saw fundamental and awe-inspiring examples of the geologic processes of the Earth. And when I’m in one of my grandiose moods I feel I can grasp the workings of the Earth in toto. However, the reality is that I really don’t know enough to know what I don’t know. And, although I consider myself lucky to be alive and to have done and seen the things I have, I can’t do everything, and so I do envy (think they are lucky) those who have also made their own ‘lucks’ along some different, interesting, fun, path. I have lived through the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo eras and I regret not witnessing, and envy thoughts who did, a Saturn V launch. Finally, I think this is why we watch these types of CZcams videos; to vicariously experience the different self-made ‘lucks’ of these individuals and to share in their joy. I certainly did when Destin did his over-head-arm monkey dance after his hokey pokey ditty.
Cheers,
Mark
********************************
Dude love this, know soo much more how it works!!! i wish all these sort of missions would provide such detailed information!!
This answered the same question I have had for a while about how samples are obtained but never really persued an answer to. I nerd out on what makes things tick in general and the combination of simple processes that we use in our lives working together to achieve end results for a sample was a bit unexpected I must say.
I thought it would involve some complex setup with sensors right near or on the drill itself but so much could go wrong with that approach. Keeping it simple is far more reliable especially being so far away once in operation. Your channel has some great topics featured and I'm working on watching prior videos as it is far more entertaining than regular TV.
You owe Megan a huge favor. Several huge favors really :-)
Mark owed you a bunch of favors and got you in there. Megan owed you nothing but still gave you a tour of ALL THINGS GREAT AND GEEKY.
Like buy her cupcakes, wash her car, find out what bands she likes and have them play at her wedding after you set her up with the man of her dreams.
That kind of thing.
If you could clarify for me a little further. How do you get the dust to go up the drill? I understand the process of using gravity to transfer the sample but how do you get the dust to go up into the "chamber"? Thanks!!
+xXTHELEECHXx good question, sorry that wasn't clear. At 7:16 you can see that the bit shaft is "fluted" - see the spiral inclined plane that looks similar to a normal wood cutting bit? Unlike a wood bit, these flutes are not sharp for cutting, rather they're for auguring the powder up through the stem and into the first chamber.
+Ryan Kinnett Okay I see it now. So i.e. we have a normal drill bit pulling out wood from the hole in a wooden block but in this process instead we have the dust being pulled up into the first chamber! Am I correct?
+xXTHELEECHXx Yeah, that's right. Cheers
+xXTHELEECHXx In case you didn't realize it.... that's Ryan from the video. The man in charge of drilling holes on another planet just answered your question.
+SmarterEveryDay I KNOW!!! I couldn't belive it at first and then I replayed the video just to make sure and I couldn't believe it! AND THEN YOU!! This has honestly been a great day because the two of you replied to me! P.S. I am currently a college student trying to earn my bachelor's in electrical engineering so when a fellow engineer replied to me I totally geeked out!! Thank you to both of you for make my day! And making me smarter of course!
I can feel the smile you had on my face I'm nerding out just watching this
I have watched this video probably 10 times and it is cool to see every single time! Thank you for making very interesting and educational videos!
This is amazing. I still can't believe we sent this freaking thing to Mars. Amazing times.
+opmike343 "we"
+Kusti2801 the is no "I" in NASA

Protip: If they work in an aluminium mine or rubber farm, there's every possibility that they actually had a genuine hand in creating it.
+AgentXRifle
There is no T, R, U, T, H in NASA either.
Ar Ky you must be one of those flat earthers
You can see this earthbound rover out in the yard on Google Earth if you look at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The rover is located in the dirt area at the northeastern side of the campus. The rover is a white rectangle just left of a smallish building with a tan roof. That building is the one in the video that the rover is kept in. If you zoom in on the rover you can see the 6 wheels.
It's blurred though
+Daan de Jong Blurred compared to what? It's a photo taken from a satellite that's in orbit over four hundred kilometers up. Did you expect clarity like a wedding photographer would get at 3 meters? I found it very exciting that the satellite got a shot with the rover outside! What are the odds of that happening?
No of course not. I know how a satellite works -,-. Its blurred compared to the surrounding area, perhaps it is blurred by purpose, like they do at military basis. Perhaps Google shows me different pictures because I'm in another country or something.
+Daan de Jong Could you provide a screenshot? I'm looking at it right now and it's not blurred. I can clearly see all 6 wheels and even the glare from the sun off of them. I can also very clearly see a blue sedan and a white pickup truck in the road next to it. So clearly in fact that you can see a bed extender in the back of the truck
+deezynar As far as I know, google maps switches you aerial photohraphy when you get in close enough.
This is an ever so cool episode. Great science, great interviews, great thinking, great song writing !!! Looking forward to more "Getting Smarter Everyday".
Can't believe I hadn't subscribed your channel already! I for one certainly appreciate the video, thank you for making!
I never knew I could be so intrigued by drilling.
i can think about something dirty but that would be Boring . :p
It's primarily due to his high enthusiasm and interest about it, along with the drill guy's enthusiasm and what not
they think its cool
so you found it a little more cool
extremely weak design
this dude just confirmed water on mars and acted like it was no big deal
Water on Mars IS no big deal... water does not necessarily mean life lol
Marcus_Mravik yes, but no water most likely means no life as we know it
they ve even confirmed large amounts of water in the dark side of the moon so y no big deal
He confirmed soggy soil which is water but just moisture. We are currently on the hunt for standing liquid water. We know for sure that the planet mars has H20 in some forms at the surface and we have known that for a while, even in 2008 the Phoenix lander took pictures of snow falling from clouds about 5km above the surface but the snow evaporated before it hit the ground, which is called virga.
I dont think he meant to, noticed how he hesitated when he realised what he was saying.....
This is great, thank you so much for videos like this.
Thanks Mr. D and Ms. Meagan, Mr. MRober, and all. Keep it strong and super!
I can feel your genuine excitement in this video Dustin, loved it. keep up the awesome work.

I love learning new things, and I love your channel! Keep it up!
11:16 man, I’ve watched mold grow for 20 minutes, you’re good.
Destin... A 10 min video nowadays is nothing. Especially if it's educational videos like yours.
I think the 5 min CZcams rule is out dated now. This was back in the 2000's when CZcams was starting, and I think this is applicable most to personal vlogs.
Your videos are awesome and very educational... even a 30 min would be a small video if filled with such amazing content you're able to provide.
Literally one of the coolest and most informational videos I've seen about this stuff. Glad I ran across your videos again. There's so much mindless content out there, but this is actually beneficial to my brain. Lol.
... Destin, you're an inspiration to possibly millions of people... Wow! that's simply amazing!!

good mythical morning?
Yep.
Thanks for sharing, always fascinated with the rover👌
Waow, just discovered your channel, you do Awesome stuff. Thanks. It keeps my mind growing
Be careful. It might explode 🤯
I'm surprised this expensive, highly advanced rover is just sitting in a garage like this. Like, oh, just walk around this corner, take a peek in the garage over ere, and wow, there's the rover! I don't know what I was expecting, but I was expecting something like a clean room environment, not something you can just walk up to from outside like this. Pretty incredible stuff. Love it.
don't get any good ideas
+paulczar Well, mars isnt a clean room and there are no people there to fix it. so i guess its a bit more sturdy than we are used to when talking about spacecraft.
+fakiirification good point. It's very well built and durable rover, even though the wheels are getting torn to bits on Mars. But still, Earths environment is in many ways more damaging to the rover than Mars. In my opinion, the presence of oxygen and water moisture in the atmosphere mean components on the Earth twin rover can oxidize (rust) while on Mars, I'm not sure this is really possible. I guess there are other oxidizing agents, but I'm still surprised how the rover is stored like this. But it does make sense. Either way, I love everything about the rover and Mars.
The rover looks so delicate but it was flown to another planet with a rocket and landed on that planets surface
Planet called nevada desert? Cool
Marko B good joke
@@ethanrocheleau3344 Not a joke, mars is a wandering star, you cant land on a star beside of nasa faking it.
