Todays video is finding out whether we can use budget, standard MDF to make mouldings with.
Find out if it works and what kind of paint finish we achieve!!
I hope you enjoy it!

I like these videos that put a professional finish cabinet within reach of a competent diy'er.
Thank you 👏🏻
Thank you, and that is the aim.
I'll try and make more similar to this 👍👍👍
Most profitable job I ever had - Making Georgian mouldings for several houses in mdf. Spindle moulder for the skirtings and a laminate trimmer for the trims. A rosette bit in the drillpress. NICE!
Where there's a will there's a way 🙂👍👍
Nice
Extremely useful. Thanks. Expecting to make lots of mdf cabinets for ourselves and daughter and son and their families. Probably money best spent on the router bit and knowing a local place to sharpen it
Thank you, and yes good idea, saves buying new cutters every time!
Really appreciate you sharing this knowledge with us - really interesting.
Thank you really appreciate it!
Another great video show casing your skills well done. 😊
Thank you , I really appreciate it 👍👍👍

Great info as always. Would love to know your thoughts on on how durable the material can be over time compared to more expensive options?
Thank you!
I cant see it being any less durable to be honest.
Standard mdf is still pretty dense and hard wearing, plus its got the paint finish over it, so I dont think much!
Great video !! thank you
Thank you Michael 😊
Absolutely nothing wrong with standard mdf as long as you put in the prep time which doesn’t take long. I use standard mdf from Wickes, it’s usually Kronospan and my cabinets and spraying always come up nice. Like yourself I always give the edges a couple of coats of primer with a brush and roller before I sand them back and spray them. No way am I spending silly money on moisture resistant mdf. And I’m a Chelsea fan by the way Ryan, what a crazy game that was on Monday night…
I agree, just a small amount of labour extra and you saves loads of 💰.
God yeah, great game, I was there, the red card and pen was a game changer 🙄 but still enjoyable
Awesome video!!
Merci beaucoup monsieur Rix
Top content as ever! Thanks for sharing. Timely tutorial. I've been painting MDF recently, although I've applied a timber edge to cut edges of the MDF, and was wondering how a moulding to create a raised panel would take paint on standard MDF. The problem with going really slow when routing is the danger of leaving burn marks. Of course, a decent router and sharp cutter should reduce the risk. Anyhoo, I'll give it a wee go before deciding. Again, thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience.
Thank you!
Yes the slower you go the more risk of burning.
Also the bigget the cutter the harder thw cutter has to work.
This technique worked on a relatively small moulding but I couldnt say for sure about bigger mouldings such as a raised panel. Work a go though.
Thanks for the comments :-)
Ryan
Great work as normal. As comparison I recently bought 6 sheets of finsa hydrofrugo and that is £50 plus vat, pack of 18mm was £20 plus vat each. So a pack of 50 sheets of standard mdf for the cost of 20 sheets of finsa is a big difference. Although I will say it machines like a dream.
Yeah MASSIVE price difference, but I suppose the quality between the 2 is night and day.
I use standard on everything, just because I can get a good finish with it.
I recently bough a pack of 16mm, 18mm and 25mm standard and that cost enough! Id hate to think of the price if that was finsa
Nice result there, any reason for spraying with the moulding facing down?
Thank you.
Mainly as I wanted to spray the top face at the same time without having to flip it over :-)
Hi. Great job. What primer and paint are u using?
Hi Thank you!
believe it or not its 3 coats of the same paint.
I use waterbased silk emulsion for all three.
If you watch this sundays vid (12th november) itll have more info about it :-)
Be good if you do a comparison of different types of MDF after following your normal process
Good idea, it could be something I follow up in the future for sure! Cheers!
What top paint do your used please
Hi I used 3 coats of waterbased silk emulsion, Probably the opposite of what people would advise to do, but it works.
Watch this sundays video for more info :-)
