Screecher's Reach is the closest Star Wars has come to straight up Cosmic Horror. Living a horrible existence, entranced by voices from a corrupted item, dragging your mates along on a doomed quest, killing what you think is the threat only to be "rewarded" by your cosmic host, everyone pretending it's a good ending when everyone can feel the truth and we as the watchers know the true horrors ahead. Absoloutley great stuff
I love that I thought this episode would be like a charming coming of age story, with Daal discovering courage and the force, and she did do that but with the dark side.
Turned from a coming of age story to a story of a child being manipulated simply with the change of the sith ladies eye colour
@@connorbosley4431 There were a couple of things before all that with the conversation with the big fella, that Daal has some darkness within her, and the moment she kills the Screecher, its done out of fear and anger, and that things are about to turn worse for her.
i love the concept of becoming a sith as a way to release from hardship
Yet, to only embrace more hardship down the line. In a way, I love this Episode sorta reflects abit of the first, showing that a Sith…regardless if they are good or bad, face lonely existences. Forced to either come to terms with the Evils they have done, or forced to walk a path that’s separate from their former Master!
The Life of a Sith is filled with Strife, almost never any peace.
This one had me, surprisingly, quite emotional at the end. It left me with a little depressing feeling. Especially when she tells her sad friends she'll come back, but we all know that will propably never happen.
After having seen all the episodes, this was, I'd say, my favorite one.
Or worse, she WOULD come back, but being a completely different person.
We know that often the people the sith love and get attached to do not have a great time, they commit commit atrocities in their name and eventually they get discarded when the sith sees that attachment as an obstacle in their quest for power (or they get killed in a fit of anger when they don't correspond, there's some intersectionality with the last point there)
What if the Screecher happened to be future Daal, barely human any more but she did come back as promised? To be killed by her own younger self in a full circle tragedy? Time paradox obviously, but the thought kinda felt right to me...
This was definitely one of my favorites, I love how the ending is presented.
And especially since we know what horrors and absolute torture Sith like Maul and Vader went through in their Sith training and childhood. She atleast hopes she will be free and happy after leaving her friends, but at best she will end up hoping someday she never made this a choice like this.
The "making of" featurette pointed out that when Daal is by the campfire and thinking about her future, she turns away from the light and away from her friends, and looks out at the darkness (of space).
Yeah when she goes in the cave, her friends retreat but she wanders further into the darkness, as if attracted to it. Its horrifying to think of the path she'll now go down having made her choice.
Getting all Irish up in here, with thick accents and a banshee being really scary. Real world mythology seamlessly inserting itself into the universe is a indicator of how malleable Star Wars is, a great thing to have for fans all over the world to connect with. This season shows off so many different worldviews and how each can be a part of Star Wars so well.
Cartoon Saloon is an Irish animation studio whose films have very heavy Celtic influences.
@@RichardDicksondlyrch68 I have watched Wolfwalkers before, I instantly remembered the studio, especially when the accents kicked in.
@@supremefankai5480 I WAS WONDERING IF IT WAS THE SAME STUDIO
“Give me strength.”
“Through strength I gain power
Through power I gain victory
Through victory my chains are broken
The Force shall free me…”
Totally true ! Totally the Daal's journey !
And im the 100th like let's going to joy for pretty much nothing😂
Best episode of both seasons for me. Love the influence that Irish history and mythology plays in the story.
Man those screams were spine chilling.
I'll be honest, Cartoon Saloon was the studio I was most excited to see do a Star Wars story because I knew it was going to be so godsdamn pretty, and it did not disappoint. Someone remind me to put one of the Irish Folklore trilogy on the next movie submission that the crew run.
Cartoon Saloon has great films in that art style. Wolfwalkers and Song of the Sea are just amazing. Be nice to see Blind Wave react to them.
I was equally excited that they even had some of their stars from those movies characters in this one! Mebh was Daal!
ive been meaning to watch more of their work. First heard about them after watching The Breadwinner for a class.
i don't know the studios that would be working in this season so when i watched this ep, i was like, wait, the studio name sounds familliar, and then the opening and i was like this looks familliar
yep, they were the ones that made amazing stylized animated movies
The studio who did this episode, Cartoon Saloon (who have done Wolfwalkers) have a penchant to incorporate a lot of Gaelic/Catholic mythology, and it shows. The Screecher is a clear analog to the Banshee of Irish mythology and the Sith at the end is tall and beautiful but also threateningly inhuman much like the Unseelie. Daal's use of the pendant and whispered prayer is very reminiscent of a practitioner of the Catholic faith.
On top of Maul being discarded and left insane and consumed by the Dark Side, this was just like Luke in the Force Cave on Dagobah killing Vader and seeing his own face. Daal has no idea of the cycle that she's gotten trapped in even though everything is all laid out for the _audience_ to understand it.
What I think is most interesting is that Daal's journey _SO CLOSELY_ parallels Luke's journey in wanting to leave the work house and the farms, and following a Force mentor to destroy a terrifying evil. Young, vulnerable children can't distinguish "escaping what they hate" from "embracing what they love" and the ending makes me really realize how much the Sith were a shadow in the *_exact_* shape of the Jedi Order.
Just like the ending shot, their perception of how that balance of relief & pain is a _mix_ of Light & Dark where they can't distinguish when it's safe and when it's dangerous - _especially in juxtaposition to the darkness of that cave and the light of whatever they had to do to escape it._
Those young Force Sensitive children letting go of their attachments and leaving behind their friends & families have no way to tell if they're being guided by a Jedi Master or being manipulated by a Sith Lord. That's why this episode has stuck with me way more than any of the others, and keeps making me look back at other *Star Wars* stories through this lens.
I honestly forgot I was watching Star Wars until the saber ignited in the cave, and I mean that in the best way possible. All of the shorts in this series are amazing and the art styles in this volume are so unique and stunning, but this one still stands out to me because of the tone. Just haunting.
This episode was SO GOOD
This Sith “mother” clearly gave the amulet to Daal at some earlier point, seeing potential in her Force sensitivity. But I think you’re right that the phantom wraith in the cave was probably her former master, and she essentially tasked Daal with a hit job to do her dirty work.
I think (and this is some conspiracy shit right here) that the wraith/banshee cave sith was the master and the lady sort of forced her into hiding in that cave because she's frail and is probably using most of her force skills to hold herself together given how she could barely pull a saber being held by a child and seemingly wasn't able to lift the rock or Dodge it in the first place
Looking at the sith's spaceship it tells us she's rich so I wouldn't be surprised if she had dooku kind of money and made the whole place they worked at in search of force sensitive children, the line "nobody that has ever gone there has come back" implies this has been attempted before and that the people who never came back where other children from the mining facility/factory as I don't think those child workers who sleep on the factory have the chance to speak with many people from outside to hear said rumors
I'd HIGHLY recommend you guys react to some more Cartoon Saloon stuff. Their Irish Folklore Trilogy is breathtaking and was nominated for academy awards. The Secret of Kells is first in the trilogy.
Okay but hear me out they made a random sith lady absolutely terrifying. I don't wanna see Irish folklore even scarier than it was written and described
Where can I watch their stuff is it on a streaming service?
@@ryuhitsuya21 the shreek of the banshee in this episode was horrifying enough that's for sure
@@randycropsey6131 I bought them from Amazon so can't help you with that I'm afraid
I watched Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers by Cartoon Saloon. Secret of Kells I want to see next.
This is one of the best Visions yet. So good! Makes me wish we could see more of these worlds and characters
This is easily the most unsettling episode of season 2 the more I dwell on it's implications. Reminds me of Darth Zannah's early years of training with Bane.
My favourite episode I've seen of season 2 so far. Such a great change up at the end with little clues along the way when you think back.
I like that when she says "I've heard the ghost is in your mind" she clutches the medallion and it shines a little bit from the campfire
I am incredibly biased because I know people who work at Cartoon Saloon, but this is personally my favourite of season 2. Also in the extras there are small 10-15 min long behind the scenes stuff with all the different studios that is totally worth watching.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who picked up some Nightsister vibes from this ep! Also - as soon as Calvin asked "how do you think that name is pronounced" I laughed out loud. Yeah, we have some interesting names over here lol.
The story beats are literally the sith code. One of the best tellings about falling to the dark side.
This has to be my 2nd favorite short out of the lot just from asthetics and directing alone and then of course the whole twist on the traditional Star Wars story
What a banger, Cartoon Saloon did not disappoint me, this episode really connected with me emotionally. Great voice acting, great designs, especially the Sith mistress and her ship.
"This was always for you, my young apprentice. Only for you."
Cartoon saloon(the studio that made ep 2) are animation geniuses. They made the irish fantasy trilogy, including movies like secret of the kells, song of the sea, and the wolfwalkers. And each of these movies are more breathtaking than the last one. They are the single most underrated animation studio that has ever existed, since their movies are absolutely gorgeous but never receive appropriate box office reception, which is unbelievable because their movies get nominated for academy awards all the time. I hope this short will bring more attention to this studio.
The EXTRAS for each episode are very enlightening.
Something I find very interesting about this episode, is how well Celtic and specifically Irish folklore mixes with Star Wars. Banshee are called by a slightly different name in Old Irish, ben síde. The síde can be pronounced or spelled sidhe, it's a term used to refer to the Fey Folk, in Irish folklore they are rarely beneficial and are know to kidnap people. However, what i find even more interesting is that what the Old Irish call Sidhe, in another Celtic dialect Old Scottish they are called Sith, and again the Scottish folklore had little good to say about the Fey Folk.
What I have wondered since the mid 80's, when I learned about Celtic linguistics, was how deliberate George Lucas's choice of the word "Sith" was and if it had anything to do with Celtic and Scottish folklore?
This is actually my favorite episode out all of them. It's the only one that made me genuinely want a real sequal for it. And i really hope it gets one.
You know how they gave the ronin like a short novel, i want that for this, I would eat that shit up
My favourite by far this season and that is saying something
One of the Best written of the shorts, it's very smart, and that twist is fantastic! We need more scary Star Wars.
My favorite episode of season 2. So tragic and emotional.
I absolutely love Cartoon Saloons films, and this was easily my favourite episode of the show. The music at the end when she's leaving is so haunting. It's sad because you know she might be escaping that life, but she's not going to have a happy one waiting for her.
I was half-expecting the Sith Mother to have Daal kill her friends as a final test to fully prove she is committed to walking the path of a Sith.
The little purple child was force sensitive. I'm sure she sensed the Darkness within the cave from the rogue Sith.
bethan too a little bit less I'd say, even tho the sith was framed like a nice God thing he went straight for a defensive stance carrying the purple child, who was kinda frightened while the goggles kid was just kinda upset about daal leaving
@@TheSvmurai I also get the vives this is not the first time she has sent children to the cave, if they have to steal speeders to get out and sleep inside the fabric the rumors about people not coming back have to be internal
@@matiaspereyra9392 Damn, not everyone who shows the slightest bit of intuition is force sensitive. Bethan is old enough to realize that a strange woman who Daal has never mentioned before is a little sus. You don't need to be force sensitive to get bad vibes from someone or something lol
@@australianwi-fi well yeah but see how everything else is framed, to us is creepy as fuck because it's clearly a sith, but everything in the scene indicates she's framed to them in a non antagonistic way, creepy voice, eyes and pointy teeth shouldn't set off an alarm since they live with aliens and shit, her ship has delicate wing like shapes and no guns, she's also framed for the benefit of the audience like a saint, not that they understand that imagery but that's a way to comunicate that that's the facade she puts on, siths (when they want to be) are good at deceit so a random child maybe shouldn't be able to tell that that woman is bad news
I love that when they tried to pronounce Niamh I knew the name even though I skipped the credits. I studied a bit of gaelic myth and language for a novel and seeing an animation incorporate those same elements was wonderful.
The studio behind this short was the same behind the movie Wolfwalkers
Eric’s slow smile when the sith starts talking through the locket… I’m here for it
This is my favorite episode of the season. At first I thought it was a well written story that could fit in any universe, not just Star wars. But the more I thought about it, the more I think this story thematically echoes Anakin's life and the road he took to get to eventually who he becomes. Amazing just all around.
The last scene in particular echoed Anakin and Shmi's goodbye scene in The Phantom Menace, the phrase "don't look back" spoken in both scenes with very different meanings behind them
I love this story. It's my favorite because it feels real , all the others are more or less typical happy endings with good-willed people.
Here, Daal is a miserable and desperate child who wants nothing but to escape her prison, a life as a corporate slave. But look at what she did and signed up for to do so. She chose a path of darkness Because it was literally her only option. She killed, abdoned her friends behind, and will certainly become evil, but it will be " a better life".
Her stroy is sooo similiar to Darth Bane, who grew up in simuliar circumstances.
Poor and desperate people Choose evil because it is actually better, in the real world too: theft, drugs, prostitutes, deception.
For me, it calls into question the type of society we have that LEADs people towards evil. A person ultimatetly chooses, but society is the one presenting the limited options. A great story usually has a morale
Every episode this season was great, but this was my favorite. Something about it is so surreal and haunting. It deserves to be canon.
The Sith from the cave gave me Abeloth vibes.
I watched almost all of season two last night and this one and Sith were probably my favorites, though all of them were amazing this season. The ending is so tragic and beautiful, framing this stranger and their ship in this shining light, and then everything else gives the complete opposite vibes. That Daal likely isn’t getting the freedom she thinks she is, looking back at her friends she’ll probably never see again, or if she does she won’t be the same. Daal’s VA really sold it too, they were incredible. This short is such a different story than what you expect from Star Wars and that’s why it works so well I think.
A great SW cautionary tale about being careful when opportunity for your dreams come knocking cuz you might not want to take that opportunity just because its there. Also, be careful in what you believe in, it may lead you astray.
Anjelica Huston is director John Huston's daughter. My favourite movie of hers is Ever After.
Ugh why does it make me cry every time
LOVED LOVED LOVED this one, my fave of all of Visions
More stuff that isn't just "Sith bad" is always welcome.
It's still sort of that, but it does it through subtlety and just really sketchy vibes. You wouldn't expect a dark being to be bathed in light and arriving via an angelic-looking ship, but then again that's what the Devil is best at. It's a really cool take on the Sith.
My favourite episode this season!!
One of the best things I've seen not just in Star Wars but in anything, it being Star Wars is just a plus. If this is what this studio (Cartoon Saloon) can do in 15 minutes, I would love to see what they can do if Disney gives them a budget for a full movie or show.
This one was surprisingly dark and from the trailer I had pegged it as one of the more goofy ones
This is my favorite one out of the bunch for sure
This felt like a Stephen King story in the best of ways!
My favorite visions episode
This was my favorite episodes of season 2. The whole tone, the music, the VA, the twist.. so eerie.
It's like some old lady Sith was living her own life in her cave bothering no one, and these dumb kids keep bothering her. Then we find out it's all a test from ANOTHER Sith? Crazy
When she starts, she thinks it's all in her mind, but when her arm gets slashed, she realizes it's real. She kills the witch because she has to to stay alive, but she was driven there to do this as a test to see if she can find strength in her fear.
The music is what really makes it for me. Looking forward to the score.¹ Also that shot of them speeding in the distance with planets/moons looming large.😳🥰
·••●◯●••·
¹ ─ That is, I expect them to, since they released scores for season 1. 🤔
Great short! I had goosebumps the entire time
The silence from all of you for the last like 2 minutes is profound. Understanding the implications of a clueless and starry eyed hopeful child seeking a better life, a life which is only attained because of manipulation of that very hopefulness. This is my favourite episode of the season. It is as haunting as it is beautiful and the music is truly sublime.
This studio is known for their awesome Irish mythology movies. This is an interesting take on a star wars banshee.
This is my personal favorite from Volume 2
Easily one of my favourite episodes of Vol.2. Being Irish myself, I really appreciated the Celtic take on Star Wars with the Banshee and everything.
“A New Hope” is how I see this episode in my head. Even though everyone else knows what red means.
we may have just witnessed the rise of the most powerful sith master of all time 🤔
Here's my incomplete theory. I believe there is a prophecy at play in this short. Pause on the image of "The Ghost's" cave after the rock falls on her at 6:12. On the right hand side of the screen there are etchings in the rock wall that echo imagery of this world. The logo of Daal's necklace with a long-haired woman (the Ghost) reaching out to it. The Ghost holding her lightsaber in battle with someone (The Sith Mother?). The Ghost holding a child's (Daal?) hand, both of them with a floating object over their right hand. Then something that might be the Sith Mother's ship landing on the planet. I wish the the filmmakers had said something about this in the Filmaker's Focus featurette.
My favorite of the season
Incredible episode. Having watch every episode this season, I think Season 2 is much better overall than Season 1. The first 2 episodes this season were just incredible. The animation in episode 1 was breathtaking, and this one had its moments, but both episodes had really interesting stories. The "twist" in this episode, along with the straight up horror aspect, really sets this one apart from all other episodes of both seasons. Just phenomenal.
I'm here for my leftovers 😂😂😂😂so elite
Alien Sith Abduction basically lol So traumatizing for the kid. She'll probably grow to hate her master for taking her away from her friends & forcing her to kill, and that hate and trauma will be used against her to keep her in control like Sidius used on Vader... 😅 anyways good ep lol
This one still gets me emotional at the end. It's just the second piece from Visions to do that (after The Village Bride), and I love the differently poignant way it does. That moment with just the music before the credits come up is a nice touch. On the lighter side, Quin is hilarious.
This was the saddest episode but also my favorite.... Now I'm going to be as excited about the new Visions seasons as the live action shows
Another amazing video
Cartoon Saloon's style is so distinct, was looking forward to this one from the first frame of it in the trailer
It’s crazy how based on the art I immediately new what studio it was
This was my favorite episode of this season for sure!
I always interpreted it as The Ghost being the Sith Master’s old Master. But she had Daal kill her former master for her and then took Daal as her new apprentice to fulfill the rule of two
My theory is the owl lady sith drove her master mad, turning her into the Screecher and the test for her own future apprentice.
"Haunting" is the one word that describes this short.
One of my favorites from an animation standpoint, love the look of the sith in the cave. One of the best artistic designs in SW
I got chills.
I’ll be honest, I had a more difficult time enjoying this season than the first. When it comes to animation, I gravitate more toward anime styles. My favorite animation being last airbender/legend of korra. So for me, episode 5 was obviously a high point (and is currently as far as I am in the show). But rewatching these episodes with you guys is helping me appreciate them more. I really was not paying enough attention on my initial view. This one specifically is one of the best of the first 5 episodes.
This episode is messed up lol, but in a very good way, the story is unexpected, when the realize who she was contacting this whole time you're like " oh... "
this episode is probably my favorite short animated story so far (I've not seen them all yet) but when someone says animated star wars this episode, the village bride and clone wars are gonna flash through my mind
When season 1 came out and when this season came out I binged the whole thing in one sitting 😂😂it’s so addicting the animation is so interesting the stories all have deep meaning and messages this is what you call a binge worthy show🔥🔥🔥
Yep, this one is still my favorite.
Im so glad to see your guys reaction to this
Haven’t seen them all yet, but out of the first 4, this one is my favorite.
Couldn't see what credit they were pointing out, but I heard "Nye-am" and immediately knew it was Niamh
My favorite of the season. The loss of innocence and the realization that her life will be filled with anger and rage. I hope she can go back home one day 😢.
She will not be the same person.
Eric had wuch interesting facial expressions today 10/10
Great discussion and reaction🎉
I can’t believe season 2 of visions has been out for all this time and I didn’t know. Shows how often I check for content on Disney +
As for what I got out of it, I felt there is a religious element to this episode throughout, but the dark turn at the end absolutely shocked me. Catholicism and Irish mythology has been apart of Studio Saloon’s make up since their inception and her constant reassurance with her necklace (much like one would a cross or pendant or a rosemary) she constantly was asking for strength and she put great faith in what was guiding her. Then she came against the ghost like creature (with some cool dark side elements) and it was like a constant search for the light to save her, but in the end it was something much darker and violent, it was almost sad to see how wretched and broken it was in the light screaming and howling like it was in tortured pain
And after all that this almost angelic being appears to her to reward her for all her faith. But we being the knowing audience know this being isn’t so angelic…
Such a trippy story, I love Studio Saloons movies and this was a great little piece they have contributed to Star Wars
Now i really want them to react to cartoon saloon movies especially wolfwalkers
this episode was just Ireland in space
The Vision I most want to see a full length sequel to. By a lot.
love the music, its perfect
Loved this episode. Would’ve scared me senseless as a kid
I knew it! Same studio that did Wolfwalkers Cartoon Saloon same voice actress too Eva Whittaker
I’m Irish and “Niamh”, Calvin was on the right track but not quite right. It’s more like the word knee ending with a v so Knee-v
Or another way take “Eve” from Christmas Eve and put an N is front, N-eve.
Thanks, Eric! Thanks Rick! Thanks, Calvin! Thanks, Aaron! 😱 This is my favorite of the bunch. #StarWarsWaveSquadron #StarWars #StarWarsVisions #ScreechersReach
This episode was haunting and beautiful. Top 3 this volume
