    Looking back, this was SO amazing! The kid asks the medallion for “strength”...... but JEDI don’t ask for strength, they ask for balance. The SITH code demands strength. You go back and and there are so many clues that you just didn’t realize. IT’S SO GOOD. Best one of the whole season I think!

    I loved how the Sith Mother's eyes changed when she said "No". They turn from a gentle grey to dark yellow and her tone shifts. She becomes more cold, losing any of the earlier sense of warmth and loving nature. You can feel the threat behind her shift in tone. She's done with pretense, and had Daal rejected her I've no doubt she would've killed all those kids on the spot.

      You honestly don't know though, and I think that's what makes it fascinating. She is clearly Sith but there are levels to the depths of evil in Sith as well. Some aren't as evil as Sidious. But at the same time the girl is aware she is force sensitive and could pose a threat in the future so she could very well kill her as well. Damn good episode

      I love how Screecher's Reach and the Ninth Jedi from last season use color to set up expectations in the audience and then turn around and subvert those expectations with clever twists. These two are truly a case study in how to manipulate expectations in stories.

  • @TheStorytellerWolf
    @TheStorytellerWolf Před rokem +95

    I love how the ending recontextualizes the whole story. From the beginning Daal is unfocused at the factory, then her demeanor is deathly serious when she says "We're going to Screecher's Reach" like it's not just a fun field trip to a spooky hotspot with friends. Then on the way she asks her friend if she got the opportunity to leave, should she, really pushing for him to give her aspiration approval. Then later on she says "Some bad places exist to test you" which is clever foreshadowing in hindsight. You can really tell on a second watch that the whole time the weight of the test was on her mind.
    I'll also throw it out there that the screecher was the Sith master's former apprentice who went mad in the caves, and it was the master's intention for Daal to replace her by killing her and taking her lightsaber.

    What I like the most about visions is that it shows that Star Wars isn’t just one singular genre: it’s multiple. There’s grittiness, adventure, lightheartedness, family, western, light vs dark. Just as George intended. These styles, while not canon are able to shed layers.

    Skreecher's Reach is the closest Star Wars has come to straight up Cosmic Horror. Living a horrible existence, entranced by voices from a corrupted item, dragging your mates along on a doomed quest, killing what you think is the threat only to be "rewarded" by your cosmic host, everyone pretending it's a good ending when everyone can feel the truth and we as the watchers know the true horrors ahead. Absoloutley great stuff

  • @DinoCam1795

    The studio who did this episode, Cartoon Saloon (who have done Wolfwalkers) have a penchant to incorporate a lot of Gaelic/Catholic mythology, and it shows. The Screecher is a clear analog to the Banshee of Irish mythology and the Sith at the end is tall and beautiful but also threateningly inhuman much like the Unseelie. Daal's use of the pendant and whispered prayer is very reminiscent of a practitioner of the Catholic faith.

    Also i found all the kids in this one to be endearing, you know with kids in media sometimes it's like "i can't stand you" or "eh I'm neutral on this kid) but this one is more like "all of you are now my children" from the first time you see them talk to eachother

    Haunting and heartbreaking. It’s more potent because it’s a child making a deal with the devil. Our protagonist will only know rage, pain, and suffering for the rest of her days; simply because the life she had with her friends wasn’t enough. This and “In The Stars” (some Chilean bias on my part there) have been my favorite stories. Which is saying a lot because this entire season is gorgeous and brilliant.

    Drawing from Irish folklore and tradition is a hallmark of Cartoon Saloon's most-known work (Wolfwalkers, The Secret of Kells, and Song of the Sea) so as a longtime fan it was awesome to see them incorporate that into the Star Wars universe. The screeching "ghost" definitely seemed like it was based off banshees from Irish legend and Daal "praying" to the medallion also felt like a nod to the Catholic tradition of carrying/wearing saint and angel medals for protection and guidance. I love that the story twisted that particular element so that the angelic entity was actually a Sith at the end, though. There's an interview with the studio head Tomm Moore where he talks a little bit about how the director of the short pulled from Irish influence and it's pretty interesting. Anyway I absolutely loved this short and it left me wanting to see more. CS always knocks it out of the park and this was no exception

    I like how every Sith is different. Some Siths genuinely care for their apprentices, some are always calm, and some are very evil and abusive like Sidious. Take Darth Marr as an example. The Sith ruled the Galaxy through various rival empires. Not all of them are "insane" like Sidious. Despite this, the Dark Side is dark and evil to harness. I like how this Sith master gives her future apprentice a choice: stay with her friends or become her Sith apprentice. The Sith Master's voice feels like the Sith Master once was initiated into the Sith the same way Daal did but lost all her innocence in the process.

    According to the behind the scenes video for this episode, the shots of the Banshee before the rockfall were done in ink on paper, and it took the artist about 40 minutes per frame. The gal who provided such a bone-chilling scream is Niamh Moyles, and the Sith who takes Daal away is voiced by Anjelica Huston. Cartoon Saloon gave S-tier work from top to bottom.

  • @MagisterV224
    @MagisterV224 Před rokem +15

    Episodes 1 2 and 5 are my favorite ones in this season. 1 for the art, the 5th for the story, but this episode is the most memorable of them all. We think this is a jedi trial, but in fact it turns out to be a Sith trial. Daal was recruited In a very simmilar way Zannah was by Bane. The angel Sith gave her an escape from her bleak reality into a different better life. I was actually worried for Daal's friends when the sith showed since I was certain she would kill them. The last shoot of Daal being consumed by darkness is really haunting to me. And that is a message of this story: even though we are given opportunities for a different life it does not mean it'll be a good life. It also means that just like anyone can be a jedi, anyone can be a sith.

    I believe there is a prophecy at play in this short. Pause on the image of "The Ghost's" cave after the rock falls on her at 6:12. On the right hand side of the screen there are etchings in the rock wall that echo imagery of this world. The logo of Daal's necklace with a long-haired woman (the Ghost) reaching out to it. The Ghost holding her lightsaber in battle with someone (The Sith Mother?). The Ghost holding a child's (Daal?) hand, both of them with a floating object over their right hand. Then something that might be the Sith Mother's ship landing on the planet. I think they'll do a behind the scenes featurette for each episode. I'd be interested to hear what the filmmakers have to say about this one.

    Poor Dahl, everything in this episode points to the darkness. She goes deeper into darkness, asking for strength. As the Sith Code says, through passion, I gain strength, and through strength I gain power. She didn't reach for the light in end, she reached out to the darkness, and pulled it down on her enemy. When she stands with her master, the light is behind them, but Dahl stands in the Sith's shadow. The last shot sums her fate up so well, she steps into the light, but the darkness closes in around her, until there is nothing left.

    As an Irish person, I was really looking forward to this one! I looked up before hand which studio was the Irish one but when I watched it, I knew immediately that it was Irish people behind it so I wouldn't have had to lol. The red hair, the accents, the use of certain phrases, it was *all* very Irish to me!🤣.
    I was just like "Yeah this is definitely done by Irish people" the whole time. I also liked that the Sith figure or whatever it was, was very clearly inspired by the banshee creature in our folklore. It's so weird how much I laughed hearing that guy call someone else an "eeigit" which is basically a slang word we have for "fool" or something. Such an odd inclusion to perk up at but I did
    This one also reminded me of a comic. When we just saw the claw/hand, my mind immediately went to the Nameless from the High Republic because it reminded me of a particular image of one of their claws in the Trail of Shadows comics but seeing the full thing, I immediately thought of banshees. And the saber ignition was absolutely sick. I loved this one and the twist at the end was such a stab in the heart, knowing she was manipulated into it by a Sith grooming an apprentice from afar

    Daal is trapped in a dark cavern, with a dark sith creature and yay, the light appears and reveal a way to go out and enlighten the solution of the rock.
    We're tricked to think it's the light side of Force who help her. But no. And when the sith ship appears, his design is soft, comfy, and it irradiates light.

    I love how nuanced this short is - I loved the other visions shorts but a lot of them follow the route of 'empire = bad oppressor'. Which is not a bad trope at all, but I loved how Cartoon Saloon has a refreshing take and decided to make a story about how manipulative the Sith really are. We can see in the beginning how Daal and the other children are essentially child labour in a factory - of course Daal wants to escape that life, and she takes the opportunity the Sith offers to her. Even at the ship we can see how the Sith deals in absolutes - the Sith Lady tells her to make her choice when in reality Daal has none. Her only options are to leave for a hopeful, better life - or stay in her miserable factory home which has quite literally, scarred her (the red flush and marks on her face imply that her face has been burnt after continuous exposure to steam). Daal was given the illusion of agency, when she in fact has none.
    A very beautiful, haunting short that shows how much Cartoon Saloon has researched and appreciated Star Wars.

      The worst part is that Daal exchanged what was basically slavery for another kind of slavery in this case being a slave to the Dark Side. Wouldn't be surprised if Daal came back in a few years to murder her friends as a final test from her Sith Master in order to formally join the ranks of the Sith Order.

I tried scaring them away, but one of them wouldnt leave, so i had to defend myself with my lightsber(i have a permit). I love this story. It's my favorite because it feels real , all the others are more or less typical happy endings with good-willed people.
    Here, Daal is a miserable and desperate child who wants nothing but to escape her prison, a life as a corporate slave. But look at what she did and signed up for to do so. She chose a path of darkness Because it was literally her only option. She killed, abdoned her friends behind, and will certainly become evil, but it will be " a better life".
    Her story is sooo similiar to Darth Bane, who grew up in simuliar circumstances.
    Poor and desperate people Choose evil because it is actually better, in the real world too: theft, drugs, prostitutes, deception.
    For me, it calls into question the type of society we have that LEADs people towards evil. A person ultimatetly chooses, but society is the one presenting the limited options. A great story usually has a morale

    12:24 I don't know about you, but I thought the Sith in the cave was the master of the Sith on the ship--did the original apprentice trap her master in a cave and drive her crazy? I don't feel like the old woman in the cave was really after Daal, but was trying to get to the exit.

    2x2 by far more disturbing episodes. Notion that a Sith lord can offer you a better life. The Sith wears a beautiful but color sterile outfit, her ship is ornate. It is as close to Cosmic horror as can get. Season 2 of Visions emphasis on Dark side is very few if any have positive endings. Sith demand strength thru passion and force, Jedi accumulate strength by distance and discipline.
    More important it's focus on music/themes of Celtic and Irish folklore. Homage JRR Tolkien where he wrote much of the LOTR about industrialization of english countryside, the planet is environmentally ruined yet patches of it's pristine green exist.

      @@OblivionZer0 She was way too old to be an apprentice. My guess would be the Sith Mother's former Master. Likely disgraced and banished after her defeat, and her former apprentice using her as a trial to choose a new apprentice is poetic.

    • @OblivionZer0
      @OblivionZer0 Před rokem

      @@zalla00 I suppose Count Dooku was too old to be an apprentice by that measure, then. It's just that there was no way the Ghost could've been a Sith Master with how little control she had over her rage. Her abilities were amateur at best.
      But yeah, the parallel with Count Dooku is literally right there: a Sith Master pitting her would-be apprentice against her former apprentice as a test.

    Just finished episode 5 ooof. Episodes 1-4 really good, enjoyed them all then came 5 Journey to the dark Head. Typical anime. Beautiful animation, terrible story, boring predictable characters, stale story and like all far east studio anime, god awful dialog. Typical of far east anime studios. Pretty terrible. Episode 5 encompasses everything that made ALL of Volume 1really not good. What I loved about this one was the voice acting was top notch and the ambiguity of the ending. Are we really sure the master was sith? Because I'm not so sure. The light shining down, the light and dark robes of the masters robes?
