Trade the shrimp filter and air stones for a sponge filter. You'll filter the water, only have 1 bubble stream disturbing the water surface, no cords and only 1 air line running out of the tank, and it only produces water current vertically instead of horizontally like the shrimp filter produces making it easier to swim for the beetles. Plus sponge filters are super cheap and super easy to maintain!

Observing aquatic insects used to be a favorite pass time when I was a child. Unfortunately, they're a rare sight now as too many humans have moved here and taken over spaces they inhabited.

I had four predaceous diving beetles as temporary pets when I visited China in the summer when I was little. They're called "water cockroaches", and they are a delicacy there, served as a popular dish. Each time we went to those restaurants, my father would steal one of the beetles and put it in a napkin packaging and hand it to me. I remember almost squishing one of them because I didn't know why my father handed me the napkin package or what was in there. We kept doing this until we had four beetles in total. We had a glass fish tank in our temporary home, and we would put them in the fish tank. I stayed in China for about five weeks before I had to go home because summer break was ending. There was never any decoration in the tank, so the poor beetles were never able to climb onto land to dry. I also don't remember ever feeding them anything, but I remembered that all four of them survived during my entire vacation. I don't know what happened to them after I went back to Canada. I imagine that they either died, or were thrown out by the other people who lived in that house. But I loved those pets and they were a precious childhood memory of mine. It wasn't until today that I found out what the actual name is. I always just called them "water cockroaches". I wonder where they can be found in Canada. I would really love to have them as pets again.

Super cool set up. I had a few of these take up residence in a kiddie pool when I was little girl. I thought they were super cool. Till one bit me lol. After that I let them have the pool. Ended up being really neat. All sorts of creatures took up residence in it. Before my dad got rid of it I threw a fit till we caught every last bug, tadpole and frog and relocated them to a local pond.

Depending on species, they'll also hunt mosquito larvae or freshwater snails. And their larvae are often venomous, obligate carnivores that will even hunt down big fish - take care when keeping!

Incredible footage! Would love to see the other aquatic insects, and possibly the larval stages of diving beetles. I think they look amazing! Also find the way they inject enzymes into their prey, which dissolve their internal organs and are then sucked into the diving beetle’s mouth really interesting n cool

Great to see these wonderful creatures. I have created at least 10 outdoor ponds in the UK that are lined with pond liner or rigid liner and I have never been able to attract wild beetles (or even bugs like Notonecta). I am so discouraged by this fact. It is wonderful to see beetles thriving in the artificial environment that you have created. I have no idea why beetles and bugs do not thrive in any of my ponds so if anyone here has any thoughts I would appreciate reading any ideas. In the meantime I will enjoy watching this video. Thanks.

Why would diving beetles prefer "well oxygenated water", when they breath from the surface?
I'd understand if they had gills, but they return to the surface for new oxygen.

Hey Richard. I so much appreciate your videos, you inspired me to get my first tarantula, my Brachypelma Hamori named Hank, an inside joke of my family. I was so thrilled, I just picked up my second, Juvenile Nhandu Tripepii. Do you have any tips for this species, I got it at the local pet store that has plenty of exotics but not a lot of knowledge. Any tips would be very appreciated.
