    wow this takes me back to my childhood of finding native beetles like this, catching them, observing them and then letting them go. I used to volunteer at a local nature center, we took school groups out into the woods and the aquatic insects day was by far my favorite. The backswimmers and whirly gigs are by far my all-time favorite.

    Its surreal going from different parts of the country and seeing such different critters doing the same jobs. I remember on the east coast finding a true wealth of complex micro crustaceans just by walking to local parks. But here in the midwest it's insects all the way down. For now the boatmen are my favorite. But Im definitely going to try and set up a toad bug paludarium at some point.

    This is incredible, Rus! This video legitimately made me feel like a kid again, with the awe and wonder of seeing something so fascinating. Can't wait to see more of this aquarium. Have you ever considered keeping the fully aquatic species of freshwater isopods? Also, do these aquatic beetles go through a larval stage like their terrestrial counterparts? I wonder if they do, are the larva also aquatic...

    • @Aquarimax
      @Aquarimax  Před rokem +1

      Glad you like it! The first isopods I kept and bred (more than 30 years ago) were actually freshwater aquatic isopods!
      Yes, all of the aquatic beetles have larval stages, and many (perhaps all) are aquatic, but must pupate terrestrially.

    you can use better stronger filters like the aqua clear style if you want the water movement to keep debris from settling around, but on the intake tubes you need pre filter sponges, and make sure they are on tight, but you can get good ones that are dense enough to keep the pets from going in, but still let's water flow strong.
    I'm not sure if you need the same water chemistry with these as fish, like watching nitrites nitrates and ammonia and such? But if beneficial bacteria is good for this tank like fish and shrimp, you can add a decent sponge filter too.
    Anyways, yeah so pre sponge on other filters intake tube is key, that's how you do shrimp tanks.

    Had a aquatic beetle end up in my fish tank, when I collected some natural sticks before adding the fish themselves.
    Took about 2 days until it decided to fly away.
    Not sure if it didnt like the tropical temps or the small copapods or whatever they are called werent sufficient food, but you probably want a good lid on your tank.
    Are the beetles you got native or tropical species?
    Eighter way probably prudent to avoid escapees.
    Really cool animals to observe though :)

    Hey Rus, I am planning on breeding garter snakes, I want to make a bio active enclosure with three garter snakes, is a 4x2x2 foot enclosure good? I have been trying to find wooden vivariums as the glass ones are quite pricey, I went to a local pet shop and they were telling me about this wood vivarium which is supposedly waterproof; however, when I searched up the brand online it doesn’t mention anything about it being waterproof, it does come readily built and says it’s sealed though. I’m a beginner and am not sure whether I should trust them, does sealed mean waterproof, I wouldn’t want to spend money on a vivarium for it to get ruined. Also do you think dairy cow Isopods would go well with the garter snakes, I just ordered some and am going to breed those aswell and was planning on putting them in once I had the bioactive vivarium set up.
