Just make sure you never let her eat grapes or raisins they are highly toxic and will kill her the vet had to pump our dogs stomach because of it for a dog her size just two or three would be enough to kill her or cause organ failure

I highly recommend getting her chipped if she is gonna roam on your land. Or maybe even some type of geo tag for her collar. In case she gets stuck somewhere when wandering.

Being a previous dog trainer I always recommend people find out what motivates their dog, ie treats or attention, and use that to teach live saving commands like come and stay. That will keep you from a lot of potentially scary incidents in the future. As far as getting her energy out when she’s just at home and not going on adventures with you. Raya’s idea about a toy that will throw a ball is great.

  • @ktk6049
    @ktk6049 Před 2 lety +61

If you don’t want her in the bed, think about getting a crate for the night time. She won’t like it at all at first, but after a few weeks she’ll learn that is her safe space and her bed. It’s also very comforting to know you know exactly where she is at night in case there is an emergency. Crate training your dog at night is a great way to provide structure and an area your dog feels super safe, and you know she isn’t getting into anything dangerous while you’re sleeping.
Another suggestion is to get a track device on that collar asap. I know that Fi has a GPS collar that would work well for your remote location. You can also throw an airtag on the collar for a secondary measure. You’d be heartbroken if she ran away or someone scooped her, so better safe than sorry since you’ve bonded with her.

Definitely second both of these tips!! I couldn't manage to get my stray crate trained but god do I wish we had that sorted, it would've come in handy countless times, and like OP said, it's a safe space too!

100%. For some reason, some people seem to think crate training a dog is cruel. But the reality is as long as you do it properly and don't use the create a some form of punishment it actually becomes a safe space for them. Highly recommend it.

I’d definitely start trying to teach her as many commands as you can. Not only will she learn fast but this is a great way to work her brain and tire her out. commands like “come” “with me” “wait” and “drop it” can be life savers in the future if there ever were a dangerous situation to present itself.

I haven’t read anyones else’s comments. But we rescued our pup over 3 years ago. Best thing to happen to us. He was a stray and not sure how long he was on the streets for BUT my two tips are. Keep her teeth clean. I clean my pups teeth every night before bed. The research I’ve done, says that the biggest indicator of health and longevity with an animal is keeping their teeth and gums healthy. Second piece of advice is get her used to nail trimmings. This is still an on going issue for my pup but I would suggest get her used to clippers or a nail file. Whether you guys do it or at a groomers. Cali is so lucky to have found you guys! Best of luck and love! ❤️

Ok, via the sheets… Get a dark colored cover for the bed & try to keep it on so she won’t muss the sheets. Unless you are successful in keeping her in her own bed. If you have a tub, run a couple of inches of warm soapy water & just stand her up in it at night. That will clean her paws. Kongs filled with peanut or almond butter will stop her from chewing your furniture or shoes. She will be quite energetic for the first few years. Doggie daycare or play dates with other dogs her size & energy level will keep her fit & calm. Cali is adorable & I love seeing Louis frolic like a child on the beach w/her. If you have a Petsmart around, they have great obedience classes! Or just Google to find an obedience class near you.

Congratulations and thank you for sharing the joy of giving a home to a street dog 💕 our top tips are - for muddy paws leave an old ice-cream container box or cat litter tray full of warm water on your doorstep with a dog towel hanging nearby , then when you are back from your walk you can paddle her paws in the box of water to rinse off mud and dry them 🐶also its great to get young dogs used to a seatbelt harness that you can pass a car ( or bus) seatbelt through - this avoids dogs bring thrown out through windscreen in a crash and being injured or running away scared into traffic ( or according to safety advice a 3 stone adult dog being thrown forward and breaking necks of front passengers) also avoids sudden jumping out of open car windows to chase a cat/squirrel/monkey 🐶

Being a dog owner, I would definitely recommend, getting a pawise pawcleaner, and a microfibre towel to help with her paws and when you bathe her. Also for her puppy energy some brain activity toys will definitely help her getting tired mentally aswell... You Will accumulate alot over time, because at some point she Will have figured them out. I use them for my girls alot (especially being chronically ill, it's hard to activate them sometimes) Also recommend figuring out which kind of shampoo is good for her coat, and fits your lifestyle.. I would recommend a harness for when you travel, and get one ahead of time so she can get used to it, and I would recommend a step in or Y style harness so they don't harm their chest and front legs/shoulders. That would be my recommendations.

  • @withoutasign
    @withoutasign Před 2 lety +12

I adopted my stray at 1.5y old and here are the most important things I can think of!
    - crate training: make sure it's a safe space for her, eg when she is in her crate you leave her alone so she can have as much "me-time" as she needs
    - recall, especially as you like having her off-leash
    - consistency: routine is difficult but it helps them soooo much
    - you're absolutely right that setting boundaries/rules needs to happen NOW sooner rather than later, it will really pay off!
    - considering her history, try not to feed into any potential seperation anxiety. For example, my dog still suffers from it a bit and will go absolutely MENTAL when I come home from work, which can be kinda funny and cute with her jumping around and making lots of noises, but in reality she's releasing a LOT of stress at once and if I reward that with lots of attention immediately I am essentially reinforcing her anxiety. It's difficult to find the right balance but I have followed you guys for years and believe you will make amazing parents!! Whether canine or human :) enjoy your time with her, dogs are gorgeous beings we can learn a lot from ♥

I keep a little tub outside the door to my camper with water that I wash her paws with before coming in. It gets them much cleaner than just wiping them. It is an inflatable “foot bath” so takes up no room or space when traveling. You could get a small plastic tub as well.

Hi ive been a dog owner for over 10 years. If Cali is a bit skittish around trucks or has anxiety with loud noises i highly recommend cbd oil for dogs also calming sprays and a comforter like a blanket or even a soft dog jumper. My dog, Kappie, is petrified of fireworks and high pitch sounds. I know exactly what you mean with dirty paws. We live in Edinburgh Scotland and well it rains...A LOT...lol. i use micro towelled mits for drying my black lab theyre really handy come in packs of 4 also they dont take up much space they also dry very quickly. I do have 4 spare dog towels though for shower times. If the paws are extremely muddy then have a spray bottle of water to hand much easier to do a quick rinse. Hope this helps. Welcome to doghood all you need to give is some tlc and what you get back is just so rewarding but beware you get attached to these cuties just like people they become a huge part of your family xxx

The most used sense of a dog is it’s nose. Incorporate that into play and she will be tiiiiiiired ;-)
Also, dogs kind of need a job to be able to relax. If she seems really restless to you, it could be that she hasn’t found her „purpose“ yet. It can be as simple as: my job is to sit in this place. This will also build trust.
Another really important thing and probably the hardest: don’t humanise her too much. Some dogs can get really anxious if you pet them too much and start biting. It seems like she really loves that kind of attention, so it may not even become an issue.
Lastly, I just love how she came into your life! I hope everything works out great 😍

If you are planning to travel with her, I highly recommend you kennel train her. It’s better to get her to feel comfortable in a kennel in her usual environment rather than wait until you travel. Our now five month old puppy (fifth dog we have had over the years) trained immediately. Keep some food in the kennel and get her to feel it’s her safe space. Our previous dog who recently passed away from old age loved her kennel so much she would put herself to bed in it every night.

Guys, live is all about balance and frames. You can move in your personal frame, but if changing or floating too much you can (ams often will) get lost! Especially kids and animals need guidance and boundaries to feel save. And don't let loose just because it's easier for you. Great little souls need the big o es to tale care of them. Mothers in animal Kingdom do the same! Let the little ones roam around and shushing them back, so they can learn to grow but with a safety net. Use your dog to train for kids... they are even more heart melting ;)

My only comment for you as first time dog owners is that I wouldn't recommend retractable leashes. The thin rope-like cord of the retractable leash can cause severe burns, deep cuts, entanglement or strangulations. It can even cause amputation to limbs and fingers of both humans and pets. If the cord portion of the leash is grabbed while it is being pulled, the chance of injuries increases greatly. Additionally, since the length of the retractable leash changes, it can be confusing to the dog what length they are allowed to go - as sometimes it can be long and other time short etc. So can be hard to them to understand the distance they can separate from you. I would stay with a standard rope leash. I hope this makes sense! Good luck on this new adventure, it is so rewarding!

She is so lovely you are all very lucky to have found e each other. Crate training is so important - it will give her a safe place and makes it easier for you all, if there is ever an emergency or you are travelling or she is unwell. Absolutely train a good recall - start in a small place eg your bus and call her between you like a yoyo - giving her praise/ a treat /or tug with her EVERY time she gets to you and then after a few days practise in a small outdoor safe area and then in a bigger area with her on leash. Every time you take her for a walk practise her recall at least 10-15 times / walk till she gets it down. Short training sessions no more than 3-4 minutes at a time with frequent breaks for her to process the info.
Make sure she has fresh veg with her meal to decrease the risk of cancer and avoid chocolate, onions and grapes but especially avoid macadamia nuts - they are deadly in small doses.
Be consistent if you don't want her on the bed - don't let her on sometimes and then not others at least for the first 6 months and then she will understand she is only allowed on when you invite her.

🐶🐶🐶 We have 3 extremely happy dogs so we want to give you a KEY 🔑 advice. The bast majority of dog owners make the mistake of thinking that you just have to physically stimulate your energetic dog and that’s ok BUT you also have to work on her mental health. How? Challenging her! For example; for Cali it’s gonna be way more tiring to find treats hidden all around the bus (when it’s rainy) than running for hours. Of course she needs to run a lot, but she needs to activate her nose in order to burn all her energy. So, a combination of physical activity with mental/nose challenges EVERY DAY is FUNDAMENTAL for achieving a true happy dog life. ACTIVATE HER NOSE and you guys are gonna have a super happy dog. Congrats you guys Cali is insanely beautiful. Much love from Barcelona ❤️❤️

As a dog handler I'd highly suggest playing games that use her nose. Things like scattering treats for her to sniff out and find. 10 minutes of sniffing is the same as an hour long walk. Mental stimulation will always tire a puppy out more than physical activities ❣️

Cali is sweet! Just wanted to say...as a dog lover...When you put on her choke chain, hold it in front of her and let it form the letter 'P' as that can slide and release easily, so to speak. I believe you have placed it on her as the letter 'Q' which can lock or fetch up and not slide easily. Sadly, I knew a fellow who lost his dog to the 'Q' version of the collar. You guys are my favourite CZcamsrs. Prob the most down to earth and genuine. I feel the true positive, happy, energy you guys share. And I wish I had a relationship like you both share together as well. Respect for all animals! Xo can’t wait for the next one.

BTW, besides California, 'Callie' can ALSO be short for Caledonia- the Roman name for Scotland (one of Louis's ancestral homelands) ! Regardless, it's great that the three of you have found each other and bonded (and that both of you were willing to bring a third individual into your lives so soon after becoming husband and wife- which can help develop patience for any possible future human additions)! Congratulations on this and thank you for sharing with us!

I'm so happy you guys were able to adopt her! She seems like a wonderful dog, and seems strikingly similar to the dog Scout that you mentioned being the perfect dog in the video. I got a puppy back in January and this is the second puppy I have trained. My tips are to be consistent with any commands/training/behaviors you want her to learn! Taking some time each day to teach her something or to practice a learned trick is key. I'm not sure what products you are able to find in Costa Rica, but I like the Pet Botanicals training treats. They are small and perfect to bring out if you're on a walk and need to encourage her or praise her for a good behavior, but she already seems like a wonderful dog! I also recommend getting something like a Kong or food puzzle or lick mat to keep her distracted on a day where you need her inside. My dogs love getting a Kong with frozen peanut butter. Anyway, I can't wait to see more of your videos with her :)

This is absolutely my fav video you’ve posted. As a fellow dog lover, I can see the love you both have for Cali and the love she has for you! She is perfect and I’m so very happy that you have her in your lives now. There just a joy and a peace that dogs bring to our lives that nothing else in the world can. Plus she’s great practice for when you start having a family. Very different…but yet similar! Congrats!! 🎉 ❤️❤️❤️

Cali is lovely and is so lucky she found you! Just want to caution on the choke chain full time. I had a dog when i was young, hang himself. That was over 50 years ago a d I still see him. Choke chains should only be used while on leash for training. Congratulations on your wonderfully sweet and very cute addition! 💕💕🐶

    Dog safety training tips!!
•Teach them to stop at doorways and wait for you to enter first. Or wait for your permission to enter/exit.
•Body language while training is VERY important. Show your dog you are their protector. If they are uncomfortable with animal/person stand in between them and your dog to teach them you have their back and they are safe.
•if you plan to hike a lot with them teaching them the "fireman carry" is good for any emergency situations if they get injured and you'll need to carry them long distances. It's just like human fireman carry but with their body across your shoulders with one leg on each side of your shoulder.
•what I call the Lassie command. This is where you communicate with your dog asking them to show you what they want. Let them get your attention then stand up and go 🤷🏽‍♀️ show me🤷🏽‍♀️
The "what is it" gesture is important and patience. Let them see that you are confused but attentive to them. Then follow them to wherever they go. Pause and wait for them to figure out they are indeed taking you somewhere if needed. If they take a couple steps then you do the same. Reward them when they stop at an objective.
