    It’s been proven that holding your fingers slightly apart (not cupped) is more efficient and advising new surfers to paddle with long strokes is absolutely against what they should be doing. This causes them to reach and with that reach, they fail to arch their backs and use their lats - this burns out the shoulder muscles which are a lot smaller, weaker and are easily injured.

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  Před 5 lety +27

      Perhaps we should have emphasise a long stroke without compromising posture but this also seems pretty logical. Will mention it next time as we agree with your point😊

    • @Thelostprojects
      @Thelostprojects Před 5 lety +3

      The arch in your back is effected by the erector spinae lower back muscles
      The lat is activated from the hyper extension of the shoulder joint.
      However your point about shoulder fatigue may be true.

    • @obviouslymatt6452
      @obviouslymatt6452 Před 4 lety

    • @kevinsutube1p528
      @kevinsutube1p528 Před 4 lety +1

    Very good video with nice clear instructions but there is one problem. A lot of beginner surfers are starting on longboards with soft tops. This makes the position you have to take a bit different and your stance a bit wider than on a shortboard. It is also way harder to catch a green wave if youre not forward enough on your longboard if you’re pretty lightweight like me. But other than that this video was perfect

    The most important thing to me is the pop-up. A bad pop-up is a bad habit and really hard to break once you actually learn to surf. I drag my knee. I've learned how to adjust, but every second counts when dropping into a steep fast wave. One second extra with a pop-up.... you just missed the wave and in the white water. Master a quick pop-up and you will be golden. Bad habits will label you as a kook forever even if you learn to surf. It's ugly. It's really helpful to at least learn on a long board. Thanks for the video.

      Kook is just a word and we all are at one time.. yes it’s all about fun. It’s just a word, but someday when a surfboard is headed right towards your head because of a unsafe careless act (most likely from pure fun ), kook might come out of your mouth. It’s just a word but part of surfing.

As far as standing up, I’m being taught to place my right knee on the board first, then bring my left knee into the center of my chest and board and then rotate into position while standing up. Im able to do that in one fluid motion but I feel like it slows me down a bit. Imma give your standup a shot. I know I’m in shape to do so and I’m sure I’ll eat sand a few times before I get the hang of it, but we’ve all been there I’m sure. Thanks for the great info my dude. Cheers from Los Angeles.

    i see so many people lay on board still then they stat paddle as the wave is picking them up then i wachem get 2 or 3 strokes before i see them go up and through the back wave missed and blame the wave has no power..... the ones that are receptive to advice i tell them if they haven't made at least 7 strokes they started to late.....

      If you're perfectly centered on your board and the wave isn't too steep for you, but you're still nosediving then try arching your back as much as you can. Same thing when the wave isn't pushing you, you lean forward and lower your head. If you try this, but still nosedive, maybe try standing up a little sooner.

      It depends on the board. If you're on one of those super long, flat foam things you'll need to be WAY further back or done modern, hybrid fish are like that too. If you're catching white water you'll need to be at the back or a long way back no matter which board you use. You also need to paddle hard to equal the wave speed. This speed will reduce how far back you have to be if you're catching white water as the impact on you won't be as great.

    My question is that in your opinion which is the best action camcorder for surfing. As there are lots of specially designed surfing cameras i would like to hear your opinion which one to pick and choose the best one out. There is this Sony AS200V Cam. GoPros off course, Sony RX0 II
    , Ricoh WG-50
    . And SeaLife DC2000
    . These are some really good models out there in the market. Please have a look at them abd advise me accordingly which one you think is the best. I understand that you may not have a fixed opinion on this matter but, whatever advise you give me i will pay heed to it.

      Hey Carl, zoom is a key factor. Have a look at cameras which excel in this area, there are many detailed reviews which should help you make a decision.

    Good pointers except the paddling. To get max speed you have to paddle with shorter stroke. The last 25% of the stroke has minimal power. There is a good video that analyzes why Kelly Slater swims faster than other surfers.
    Probably the most import topic is not discussed. Slipping off the board. The wax or pads are super important. If your feet slip off the board ask your local shop tips to make your feet stick better.

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  Před 4 lety

      Interestingly any high level swimmer would disagree with this. Shorter strokes are inefficient. There are times during paddling when you may take shorter strokes for sure, but 90% of the time, longer is better. We can agree to disagree on this one

    Is the raising the chest bit also to prevent nosediving?

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  Před 4 lety

      Partly, but more so to create room for your front leg to come through. No chest lift makes it much harder!

    Hi there, my board is 8'1, where should I hang my feet and roughly what tips should I consider? Thanks!

    • @xyzct
      @xyzct Před 5 lety +3

      Ruby, his rule of thumb about feet hanging off the end is kind of useless. Lay on your board in the water and adjust your forward/aft position so that the tip of your board is just an inch or two above the water surface. Very slight differences in position can really affect this. If you are too far forward, the nose will dive under as you paddle. If you are too far back, you'll be plowing through the water, and will never catch a wave. Most beginners lay too far back, so the tip is too high out of the water. Hope that helps.

    this video so amazing bra,actually at small waves i got it, but i want to know how to take off the waves 2feet- or more? bcause i always fall down like in the washing machine... 😂

    • @riftborn1058
      @riftborn1058 Před 5 lety

      You need to experiment with your position on the board. If you fall down and go into the washing machine you nosedive because you are too far forward. So you need to be further back. Go too far back however and you wont be able to catch the wave at all

    Where should you hold your weight? Is it dead center split between both legs, or should one leg hold majority?

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  Před 4 lety

      It depends on what you are doing, but for just standing up and cruising along, I would put slightly more weight forward

    • @riftborn1058
      @riftborn1058 Před 5 lety

      Jumping up is difficult and advanced. Id reccomend doing what he does first by pushing his chest up. Then moving your back foot up above your front knee (which should still be lying straigth) and then moving your front foot up, and standing up

      If you have been shortboarding for years i dont understand how you manage to surf with your back foot in front of your tailpad when you are taller than a lot of shortboards. You have surfed for so long that you just need to experiment if you have years if experience. Find out what works

  • @jameshallfishing3377

    Im actually a beginner too, I recently before this pandemic took a lesson. The instructor showed me how to popup. And so I did the same. He did it on an upsloap.i did it on a down slope, which was harder. But I did it twice. After an hour of water skills. We left each other. In his assessment, I was intermediate to advance. I could popup, but I had difficulty popping up during practice on the water. Paddling it was fine, givin the fact I watch surfing just about everyday. In your opinion was he wrong for taking me out to the back end/ bigger waves? After 30 minutes of killing myself I managed to popup 1 time. He said I was doing everything right, looking back at the wave before take off, everything. I just needed a coach. Someone to teach me. My worst fear before I made the opponentment was sharks. During the session I could only think of popping up. I am 6'8" tall. We went out to 6 foot deep

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  Před 4 lety

      If you are still in the early learning stages of surfing, then I can't see why you would need to go out the back to the bigger waves. Lots of repetition popping up on smaller waves around waist deep is what I would suggest...Hard to say without actually seeing it!
