- In this video you will get to follow a beginners surfers journey trying to learn how to surf. I have tried surfing before but never with an expert showing how to do it correct. My surf technique is flawed but gets corrected by Alejandro the head coach at Rise Up Surf in Nicaragua.
I reach out to Rise Up and asked if I could come by and learn to surf and make 2 videos about it and they where super help ful so check out their sweet surf camp if you want to learn how to surf too.

When the instructor demonstrates paddling in the pool looks like poetry in motion.
yeah! it makes it so easy!!!
like he was gliding through the water, like how the heck
That instructor is excellent. His explanations are very clear and logical and he covers the why as well as the how.
Yes, so good. And he smiles.
Totally!!
very good instructor with good knowledge
that's what makes the best coaches. saying something in the least amount of words but that makes the most sense

I learned more off this video than I have in 10 years of surfing. Instructor touched on points no-one else has ever mentioned.
If you don't know how to ride after ten years...try something else.
@@jondidier2282 Your comprehension of what's written above is clearly inaccurate. So, in the same vein - If your reading comprehension is still poor after a lifetime of education - stop trying to read and comment online? Try audio visual engagement, maybe? Not to be discouraging, but perhaps it's just not for you.
@@ceeweedsl I rode for ten years like the above and there wasn't much I didn't know about surfing and growing up in Southern California. He mentioned 10 years experience surfing and he learned more from a beginners video than experience. If I thought I was no better than a beginner after doing something for 10 years, I personally would try something else. I'm just saying. Also, notice the thumbs up versus thumbs down replies. I'm just saying. There's no teacher like experience.
@@jondidier2282 Not everyone is in your situation and "years" is a time frame, not a wave count. One can go to the beach with family every memorial day and log 30 rides a year for ten years. Plenty of people do "surf" that way. Even taking a lesson or two. Or you can go out 5 days a week over a year at the same break and really learn "fast". One can live right by some marginal beach break and get a lot of time in the water but few rides. Or get out to Old Man's every weekend and progress 100x faster, then move over to Trestles. It's not all the same. One can start learning at 16 yo or at 60 and that's huge also. So many factors. I agree that the video had a couple beginner tips and was not exactly brimming with subtle knowledge tho ! cheers

I am 71 started surfing in California 1962 or 3 quit about 1965 no surfing till 2016, boy it's like learning all over again, having a hard time, paddling because of a car accident hurt my shoulder, but I'm almost to the stand up point, Yee Haa!!
Yes William keep it up Sir!
Hey William this is great to read. I am 52 and just started but thought I was too old.
I'm 59 and just starting! We are never too old to live out our dreams!! That being said all tips and secrets are welcome!! Surf's up!!
One thing that is great for us old timers...SUP's!! laying down & paddling gets harder every year for me.
Everyone in this comment section is too old give up.
I’m a surfer and skateboarder and I recommend this to all new beginners
Have been skateboarding for 10 years but then stopped. Is the transition to surfing easier when u have been skateboarding?
This dude is awesome: He wakes up one day and decides he wants to surf and he goes out and does it.
Everyone should do that or ski or what ever floats their boat....
@@StompItTutorials sweet
cool
I'm gonna try it tomorrow because of this video. In Encinitas. Knarly.
Mictlantecuhtli did the same, saw this vid and had interest, went out and took lessons. no regrets, its a whole fresh hobby experience
Im a surfer and i can confirm that the advices are real and efective!!
That instructor is gold. Follow everything he says to a tee.
Now I get why most surfers have the “surfers body” damn what a muscle control you need to have.
Thanks really enjoyed..
I'm 53.. just starting out
Such great instruction without ego. A pleasure to listen to. I couldn’t help but giggle at the similarity to the sound of borat when he said that lads paddling was “very nice” though. A fantastic tutorial. The only downside to this video was it let me understand HOW much I am doing wrong. Haha.
This was incredibly helpful: watching first the untrained attempt, then the corrections (with graphics). Candid and very well done.
So relaxing to hear an instructor addressing a beginner, had very similar mistakes when younger and I guess now I just completely forgot about them when they're very natural errors
Even taught me things I didn't notice here
I agree with everyone. I surfed for the first time in 12 years today and wish I would've watched this prior to going out! Fantastic.
Possibly the best beginner surfing tutorial on YT
It's good to see that you are as good of a student as you are a teacher.
I took my first lesson at age 57. Great tips here. Excellent idea showing pre-lesson form and comparisons.
The instructor is great teaching all the details of mistakes to be improve
I have just started surfing and i am so happy i did i got to ride a few waves even only if for a few seconds. I was so nervous but wanted to really give it a go. I am now addicted😊
I had other instructors before and they were alright. This guy is above and beyond.
was surfing yesterday (beginner) and my shoulders were killing me from paddling out, now I know why, great tutorial
Despite the common thumbs down, which lack constructive criticism or why they give it a thumbs down, I'm beginning to get back into surfing (So. Cal Native) after a 40 hiatus. Although I'm in really good shape (working out no less than 3x a week for 40 years) and blow away most guys in their late 30's and older, I found this pretty useful in terms of reintroducing myself to the fundamentals. The instructor was very communicative and patient with his student. I began with a Boogie Board for a couple of weeks in order to re-acclimate myself to the surf. It's like getting back on a motorcycle and eventually getting on the freeway. At first, it's like "wtf! am I carzy or what!", then your mind begins to adjust to the conditions. I found the same taking the Boogie Board out before my board. It also allowed me to spark my memory with how waves form....very different depending on each day and conditions, reading them, and most importantly, respecting the oceans power. So here's to getting back on those So. Cal waves!
What a great lesson! That coach is brilliant! 👍🏼
Fantastic tutorial 👌 Thanks for the valuable content. I just think the instructor lifts the rise-up brand and totally deserves a decent mention!
Keep at it man. It can be a lot to take in all at once. I am by no means a "great" surfer. But he nailed teaching the fundamentals very elegantly without over explaining and throwing a ton on information at you. When he said "muscle memory", I thought wow not enough people explain why these techniques are so crucial when starting. I had so many terrible habits to unlearn when I was set in my ways a while back. This video is an excellent what to/what to not do. Building from the stroke to positioning your body, while telling you what will happen if your foot placement, body, and arms aren't in sync. And in such a small amount of time too. That makes this one of the best beginners videos I've seen. Keep on building those core fundamentals and it just becomes second nature. Fantastic video!
that dude is probably the best instructor ive heard
I’m brand spanking new to surfing and have been having lots of trouble. I’ve been watching a crap ton of videos about what to do and how to do it but none of them explain the details like this one. This video is by far the best video I’ve seen for beginners
Just started learning and he explained the pop-up so well! I have been struggling with this and going from my knees and then up. He made it so much clearer on what I need to do now. Thanks mate😊
My first time surfing was with Alex! In Portugal! Very funny, positive and cool instructor. Good video. 👌🏼
I just had my first surf lesson yesterday. I paid $120 for two hours to be told to keep my legs together and a crash course on how to stand up. Compared to this video, my lesson was trash. All of these tips, aside from keeping your legs together, were never addressed in my class. Even the paddling I found I was doing wrong after watching this video. I was definitely chest down on the board paddling. Thank you for your in depth explanations and details on the how and why’s. Other instructors should take note that this is the proper way to instruct.
Awesome tutorial ! I went surfing today for the first time but could not stand a single time, because i had no control over my board at all. Now i now what it did wrong, because i made every mistake in the video and even more i think ^^ was going to give up but i guess its worth a new try :)
Thanks man!! Have been surfing occasionally for a few years but this summer (NZ) I've been going out every other day and really wanting to improve. I've been struggling with breaking the muscle memory habit of using my knees. Watched your video twice last night, went out today and I'm instantly a better surfer!!! Your video was better than all the other tutorials I've watched because I got to learn from your mistakes XD which highlighted so many tips that other videos miss. Cheers!
I am a two time back to back 1993 / 1994 blockbuster surf champion and I can guarantee that all those tips are good and helping
Man you are the God of surfing.... Im learning too much from this video. Thanks
Ok, I just picked up surfing and this literally is helping me fix the flaws in my technique. Definitely a must see for any newbie
Brilliant instructor
Wow!
this is the best (by far) tutorial I've found on youtube!
Man this guy!!! and I love how he says posicion
Thank so much !! The video is legit!! 👍🏻👍🏻 I've tried 2 surfing instructor but none none of them as detailed as him.. even i can practice with my yoga mat on my room!!! Thanks again .
good instructor and his voice is very clear
This instructor is awesome ,his explanation are clear and steady
Great video and instruction! More power to you both.
Thank you!
This is the same guy who saved me from beeing noob in skiing. what a legend.
Gracias amigo corredor de tabla,i tried to stand up on the surfboard for a year and i have not done yet but now that i watched this video i cant wait to go back to the beah. Thank you,god bless you.
The instructor seems very kind and meaningful😊
I've been watching surf learning videos all week and this is by far the most thorough. Thank you!
Wow!
I’ve always wondered what it would be like to surf. Good explanation;I put this one on my bucket list. Thanks.
I just started watching your ski videos. And I didn’t think you’re the type to surf. Boy I was wrong. Good luck on your surfing lessons. SURFS UP!! 🤙🏼
Hands down best video done on surfing! 👏👏👏👏
The instructor is soo sweet and clear!
Takes a real man to teach others by candidly sharing your own mistakes. Thank you and your cool coach.
I just did my second surf lesson and this instructor is so good at explaining... Thank you so much!
Wow this is by far the best explanation I have heard on how to surf
I recently had a surfboard custom made before I have even tried surfing! I know, I know. I have done body-boarding and windsurfing a few years ago, but have always wanted to try surfing... properly. I live right on the beach on South Africa's south coast. This video is where I plan to start from for informing me on how to go about getting to know the sport of surfing as a beginner. I am so excited! Now if only I could fit in my wet-suit again... :)
so hows it going?
Bruh! That would be soo good to live in that house looks like it has such a chilled vibe and an amazing view
Awesome video ! Thanks !
I am going to surf and I am beginner.this video is very useful in my view.
Instructor is AWESOME!
Afer surfing over 10 years, I learned much guys:)
This was a very helpful video. I am new to surfing and have been making a lot of these mistakes. Thank you!
Thank you, planning to start surfing soon and prepping
Good points and glad to see you care so much about the customer getting the right board.
Great explanations....clear and focused.... thank you man!
I got my butt kicked the first time I tried surfing but I think I've got a chance for next time. This was the best surfing video ever! Thanks.
I went out surfing today for the first time with no instruction
I'm pretty sure I did EVERYthing wrong in this video lol
was such a blast though, I was able to stand on a wave three times, SO going back out tomorrow : )
Que Dableyou Aren't you afraid of getting lost in the ocean or something? I am afraid of going alone
I've been out a bunch of times now, if you just lie on the board, the waves will take you to shore
I always go alone but only surf where I can see other surfers, I live in California so there's always people
It is SO much fun, I always come out feeling completely relaxed and happy the whole day, try it!
Que Dableyou What is you pop up method? I've been trying to learn for 2 years. I've fixed a lot of errors over the past few months. I cant wait to go out and try again this summer.
Hi Curly!
I think you might need a bigger board, I started out on a 9 foot foamie and it was so stable! I ride regular foot and pop up on such a big board was a piece of cake because I could lift my hips by anchoring my feet on the back of the board
I am now on a 7 ft board, and it's super light and awesome but pop up is a bit more precarious and less stable.Because the board is shorter, I now have to pop up using my knees instead of my feet with the longer board
So consider buying a bigger board just to get you started; so much fun and when waves are small, the bigger board catches them easier due to high volume
Best of luck!
Que Dableyou is it scary when your in the water?
Im surfing this weekend so Im so glad I found this video. My paddling is always sloppy and I wasnt sure why till now. Love this video!
Awesome video!! Thank you!
I like the way the video was set up, great teacher and great drawings, recaps and game film to show exactly what’s happening and how to fix it 👏👏👏
quality video bro, big help for me as a beginner
u fucking druggo
I surfed the North Shore O'ahu 1968-69... back then, NOBODY used a leash... it was a long swim if you lost your board... but that just beefed up your pecks... No problems! Shaka Bra!
I'm 18 and started surfing awhile ago I myself hate leashes and traction pads. I still don't use them
@paperchasin23 LMFAOOOOO 😂
@paperchasin23 this man on another level
This was an incredibly helpful video for improving technique. Thank you so much!! Love from Cornwall, UK
"Put your leg as far forward as you can.... You've gone a little too far."
Always great instruction, we learn from our mistakes. It was great for my daughter to see how bad a great skier can be at first attempt surfing. She is a great skier, beginner surfer. It’s almost ski season!
There are so many ways that people teach the pop up, but this is probably the best to learn at home and the most stable when you're a beginner. The tips about position while standing, chest leaning, etc., are super helpful for beginner and intermediate levels.
This is video for surfing as a beginner is literally useful ! Thanks a lot ! Im going to surf at Bondi Beach today !
Great spot to surf m8, hope you are still ripping it.... cheers bro
I like this tutorial, very informative. Thanks for taking the time to put it together.
That was very helpful, I’m just starting off and needed some tips. Excellent instructor!
Excellent video with very useful tips and demonstrations of what not to do, and then what to do. I've been struggling a bit as a beginner surfer, so this was helpful. Thank you for posting this!
Incredible instruction!!! What a treat!
Thank you so much! I'm a beginner and this video was very helpful!
The best explanation I have ever seen
Just bought a hurricane 7ft soft top today, gonna learn as much as I can and start surfing with my lifeguard brother next week
Amazing! The best surfing video I've ever seen, thanks!
Dope video!
Very helpful video. Thanks!
Very helpful, very informative. I can't wait to try it as well, thank you.!
Yoga is a great tool !!! I can’t wait to go back surfing 🏄🏼♀️ lové those cues thank you
So weird seeing a board in a swimming pool.
NEO*Designs i thought the very same
Domestic Surfin
Yeah. but I'm so going to rip this idea off. Not many waves in Chicago bit at least I can learn how to mount my board and get to know it a bit. Sounds provacative doesn't it? Ha ha.! I'm a newbie surfer but I'n gonna do it!
much better than its natural habitat of a wall for 364 days of the year, sadly.
it's part of the training. Period
Great video! I see I need to be arching my back more when paddling.
Excellent vídeo my friend... Everything was so clear and also i really liked the song at the end. Thump up!
I am like you were. This video has taught me so much and I want to thank the both of you for making it. Hopefully, I can take my surfing from beginner to intermediate with this knowledge, (and enough practice.)
Great video! Very nice structure, thanks for making it. Thanks to your friend as well, he seems like an excellent teacher. Finding this all very helpful on my surfing vacation in Bali at the moment
Laax needs a surf camp! 👌👍👊
I love your video. What board is it u are using for the beginners?
This is brilliant. Thank you for sharing!
This instructor explains little details that make a huge difference. I've been surfing over 10 years with all kinds of bad habits, and have been continuously frustrated with my horrible pop up, and not being able to understand others who've tried to teach me a proper pop up. No one has ever told me to twist my shoulders. Such a simple fix!
It's a great video. Thank you a lot for sharing this class with us.
One of the best step by step videos I have seen
thank you for this video, I will try to remember all of that for the next surfing!
Great video, Alejandro is outstanding
New to surf life. This helped mw so much. Thnx
