I don't say this often on this website, but I have great respect for Forrest Haggerty. He values disseminating accurate information which is seemingly more and more rare these days.
This is the first time I've seen a lot of these letters, and first I've ever seen any of the bomb diagrams. He seemed like a really odd individual, indeed. I find it hard to believe that the zodiac couldn't be found out (earlier?) by somebody seeing these and not knowing who wrote them. This is another great presentation and some interest content. I worked in psychiatric hospitals for 10 years. His writing is exactly the kind of stuff you'd see someone with psychosis or delusional disorder writing. Some letters are more coherent and others are much more disconnected. A lot of patients are a forgotten bunch of street folk who don't really have friends, jobs, or an attachment to something that connects you to society. Most of them are on drugs and unable to function well enough to commit this type of crime for this long. But there are others that receive state funds, spend a lot of time in psychiatric hospitals, have very poor compliance with medications, refuse to work, dabble with drugs, and sort of operate on the periphery of society. In other words, they get crappy apartments paid for by the state, rarely, but sometimes have a car, and seem to have just enough money to get by without being outright "homeless". I feel like this guy was someone who was operating on the periphery of society with mental problems, poor compliance with medication, occasionally living out of his car, but other times set up in a nondescript state-funded apartment, not attached to anyone in family or friendship, yet just functional enough to commit acts of violence triggered by psychotic thoughts. I have had patients that were rather delusional but not out-right psychotic in the sense that they could maintain a semblance of normal interaction in day to day activity. Only after you talk to them a bit you find they are very paranoid and have supernatural thoughts that they truly hold dear to their heart. Given the time period, he just didn't leave the right evidence for any law enforcement to work with and it's been so long, we will never know. One might think the cypher he created was just too intellectual for someone like my description above, but I have to tell you, a lot of mental patients are creative as hell. The way they think and the stuff they write and draw is very incredible.
I'm only 24 but as a young kid I was obsessed with Google earth and just like you I would spend hours looking at old satellite photos of places with historical significance. You're like an older version of myself lol.

I know man! I was on a YMCA sponsore d school bus traveling from Boise to Ensenada. They had gone to Tijuana, but some weird stuff(?) happened(donkey show, maybe!). We were in Socal that very weekend (I think, but this was nearly 51 yrs ago). I'm sure I saw Manson pass us on the freeway! Or, I was overcome by the Body Odor from a bus load of 'stinky 14yr old boys'!

It comes across to me that the Zodiacs motives were not so much about indiscriminate “thrill” killing and earning a place in paradise with slaves etc (a distraction), but more about an underlying hatred of the police which comes out in his taunting and the killing of one of them. Maybe he was once served a great injustice by the judiciary that severely burned and enraged him and this was the means to get back at them. Just my 2 cents. Great video though and I never realised just how many letters he wrote.

I was a high school senior in 69, in the East Bay, Concord, overlooked by Mt. Diablo. First I’ve heard about the bomb threat. The main point of the Zodiac was how much publicity should he - and other killers like him - have gotten? Seems one got more info from Dirty Harry than from the press.
Two of the leading suspects, Arthur Lee Allen and Richard Gaikowski, were diagnosed with schizophrenia back in the 1960s. In Gaikowski's case he was twice admitted to a psychiatric hospital to undergo treatment and the times he was in hospital coincide with the gaps between Zodiac letters. From the late 70s until their deaths, both Gaikowski and Allen were on anti-schizophrenia medication. Gaikowski's schizophrenia was so severe, it is speculated that when he had the condition under control he wouldn't be able to remember the killings. In Allen's case he was studying for a college degree in Sonora, CA from 1971-74, then shortly afterwards he was sent to prison on a charge of child molestation and didn't get released until 1977. All these things coincide with the gaps between letters.

Fantastic video. Usually, the envelope of those letters would have a post mark and the code identifying the post office that it came from. I will surmise that there were no surveillance cameras in those days. Cuirous to know what percentage of those letters were mailed form the post office in the Bay area

Another great video. I dont think the 1978 channel 9 letter was ever authenticated. Zodiac did send a letter to the SF Chronicle in April 1978 which was authenticated at the time but then was later considered to be a hoax.According to some Zodiac researchers a DNA profile obtained from the saliva used to seal the letter matches the DNA from the saliva on the 1974 exorcist letter, which would seem to indicate the April1978 SF Chronicle letter is genuine - or as genuine as the exorcist letter at least.
Let’s say you lived in San Francisco at the time and enjoyed newspapers. The Chronicle and the Examiner would be on your radar but not necessarily the Vallejo Times. But if you lived in Vallejo, the Times would be and so would the major newspapers in San Francisco and elsewhere. He lived in Vallejo.
This video does a great job of shedding light on Zodiac's psychology and fantasy world by abstracting the letters from the crimes, explicating their content, and putting them in temporal context. Its clear for instance that Zodiac gets off on terrorizing people, and on belittling those who are supposed to be their protectors. That can be accomplished by stabbing a woman to death in front of her hogtied male friend as at Lake Berryessa, but also by threatening the lives of children and belittling cops via letters to the media. Its important to note that there are always men involved in every single confirmed killing and in the campaign of terror via mail as well. Zodiac wants to not only terrorize women but prove that other men are too weak and incompetent to protect them (or children) from him. The fact that Zodiac can fulfill this same fantasy by writing letters explains why the letters go on long after the confirmed killings.
My father lived in east bay during early 1970. There was a white middle aged man, who lived an apartment below him. After the man left his apartment, cleaning crew found large blood stains on carpet. After that tens of cops came and interviewed his neighbors. There was a rumor that he was the Zodiac. But never confirmed. That guy worked as butcher and the shop he worked was adjacent to apartment complex. Today the apartment complex is still there and there is lucky supermarket adjacent to it.
I think Patty Hearst was associated with the SLA if I remember right?.....I remember when the L.A.P.D. took down that house.....they weren't playin'....

I'm surprised he couldn't spell "lose" correctly, I see that mistake all the time but thought it to be more of a present day issue of the failed education system.
PRE ZODIAC a few years earlier in Oceanside Ca taxi cabbie Ray Davis waa executed then the killer called the Oceanside police and said he did it and he will then target a bus.
So odd that his ciphers have mostly gone unsolved, but his spelling and grammar were so poor. Lots of rambling in some and others were short and to the point. Almost like there were two people

Can you see that Vallejo seems unconnected to the larger city and its big city newspapers? There is a good chance the Zodiac lived in Vallejo.
