    Agree wholeheartedly with your sentiment. Life will go easy on you if you accept these 3 truths:
    1. life is not fair
    2. the goalposts move
    3. there are no guarantees
    You get to choose your attitude. Choose well.

      Yes! Control the things within your control and stop fixating on the things outside of it. 👍🏼

    I was raised by the "vote with your feet" mentality when it came to work and employment. It took me a long time in my professional life to have the ability to walk and start a new venture, but I've always known it was the way to go!

      I'll admit, it can be really hard to step out. But, it's something that folks need to overcome if they are unhappy in their work.

    Love it!! Shared it ASAP .. “Lost” my job because of CV-19; kept my eyes and ears open… now financial independent…. “When one door closes, at least TRY to open other doors; don’t get stuck at one door!!” Do not blame others, starts asking WHY you don’t succeed or try to change…

      Ed, I didn't realize you what you've been through recently-we need to catch up! I'm glad you're in a good place, though, and wish you continued success. Also, when are you coming to Charleston??

    Exactly, good words, one of the first mindset-changes/traits to get when you want to become successful is to take responsibility and never blame the environment, or others, make thought through actions, and accept the consequences. But even when it comes to these things, put it with yourself. If you make the situation about yourself, you'd be amazed how many things you have influence on, one way or the other. Thanks for sharing :)

      I agree. The only thing I really have control over is myself. The nice thing about that is I can make choices; choices about what to focus on, choices about what to do; choices about how to think, etc. It's amazing what a person can accomplish when they choose to focus and act. It's not easy, but I think it's not supposed to be as we become transformed by meeting our adversities head on.

    After listening to your video I was thinking of the book "Designing Your Life" by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans. For me that book really lowered the bar that I had artificially erected in my mind to open up paths forward in life. It also made me realize even more everything that you were saying, we have options and are able to design our way forward. Even if it is a re-frame of our current situation. I want to make sure to acknowledge my privileged situation where I can listen to "Designing Your Life" on audio book from my smartphone on my drive in my car to my well paying 9-5 job that I don't hate (but I don't love either).
    I think your critique is fair. I would say that the critique assumes some mental tools/ability that people would use to asses their life situation and design their way out of it that I know not everyone has gotten access to learn in their lives. Again, fair challenge and one many people need to hear, but also one that I think should be coupled with an understanding that mentally and experientially some people haven't acquired the mental models to be able to understand and develop a good plan out of a 'stuck' situation.

      @MikeGastin  Před 2 lety +1

      Great comment! Yes, not everyone has the tools, or even for some, the abilities. But, my guess is that is a small fraction of the people that complain. We should help those that can’t help themselves. We should encourage those who want to change. And, we should expect more of those that can change but refuse to take some responsibility for themselves. I know that sounds harsh to our postmodern sensibilities, but it’s the only way towards fulfillment.

    Love it Mike. Love your thoughtful discussion. As a 50+ in a technical field, I have these conversations with my teenage son. Life is hard. Life is unfair. People need to be more accountable for themselves. I started with nothing and have worked hard for decades. I agree there is a terrible concept brewing where people think they shouldn’t have to work but are entitled to luxury. I don’t get it. And, yes, there are many opportunities especially these days for work. And, yes, I see some very successful people that do not go on to college, did not come from money, but have the drive and work ethic to make great businesses of their own. But it takes drive and effort. Not video games and Netflix.

      Thanks for sharing your experience! I know it probably sounds cliché to younger generations-this idea of work hard and you'll succeed. And, it's true that not everyone who tries makes it. But, I can guarantee that 100% of the people who just sit and complain will never see anything get better. In fact, the law or entropy will take over and things will just slowly get worse. Thanks again and all the best for you and your son!

    From my (UK) perspective, these type of people are generally those that moan and are whinging about everything. If you don't like the job, look for another. Just whinging solves absolutely nothing, and only puts other people's back up.

    • @MikeGastin
      @MikeGastin  Před měsícem

      Agreed. I suspect a lot of people just don't want to work, which I bet you see in the UK, too.

    Blame no one , do something. As humans we tend to throw blames on everything but our selves. But there is always a choice you can make with whatever you have in hand . We usually fall under the illusion that we are stuck where we are , but certainly if we take ownership we will realize that we have a choice to correct course , but every choice has a price and many choose to ignore the tough ones although they are the right ones.
    You know mike , I remember another video of yours and it's very profound and direct to the point, it's about chosing the tough option but not the stupid one nor the easy one.

    • @MikeGastin
      @MikeGastin  Před 2 lety

      Excellent advice. Even if life isn’t fair, which it isn’t, no one can do anything about your situation except for you. You have to try.
      And, thanks for reminding me about that vid. Wow! Goes way back. 😉

    Excellent comments Mike, enjoy listening to your opinions and think they are well grounded in solid reasoning. However, I think some people are going to be unhappy in almost any situation, and often to a degree feel helpless, and hopeless. Sort of the polarity within the human experience, and quite often they will be your most vehement commenters. Keep up the great content!

      Hey, thanks, Tim! I know you're right. And, I didn't make this video to defend myself, but really to push people to reconsider how they might be viewing the world and their situation. Even so, I know everyone is different.

    Finally got a chance to catch up on this! Good stuff Mike. I'm not going to opine on "work hard", I'm just not like that. I'm more of a work smarter type of person. As far as those you talk about, it does take motivation and effort to make anyone's situation better and break the cycle. Misery loves company, so they say.

    • @MikeGastin
      @MikeGastin  Před 2 lety

      I do agree about working smarter. I guess that presumes one is willing to at least work. And, maybe that’s closer to the root of the issue. Hope you’re good, my friend! Thanks for checking in and have a great weekend. 👊🏼

    If someone else must change in order for your life to improve, you're essentially thier slave. They control the quality of your life. But that's the price you must pay if you want to forgo personal responsibility.
