Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down X-men 97.
-
The brand new episode has just released on Disney plus and there's lots of cool easter eggs and things we have to talk about. This entry pulls from several different comics and there's also a big movie that inspires the plot.
As always we're gonna bring a scene by scene breakdown to talk about everything you need to know.
To me, my spoilermen and women and come with us as we journey through the episode.
Heavy Spoilers ahead so if haven't had a chance to check it out then I highly recommend that you check out now. With that out the way, thank you for clicking this now let's get into X-men 97.
-
Now as always we get some brand new shots in the intro and shoutouts to you guys for something that I missed. Last week Storm was missing from the credits which highlighted that she'd stepped away from the X-men. Her arc in this episode follows the story lifedeath which is one of her most iconic arcs.

My favorite part of *HeavySpoilers - XMen’97 ep:4 Breakdown* was Arnold’s brief but impactful cameo!! 😂 1:02
definitely a gen 1 Sega Genesis console the only reference to Nintendo would be the name and grey color also the logo shape is defintely from the Genesis look at the outline. oh and another reference to Nintiendo is the sound made when they change levels and at the end when they wake up
In the opening, Jean is now wearing a ponytail. In the previous intros, her hair was loose. She's now the real Jean instead of Madelyne.
Good catch
I peeped that too
that makes sense. thei are really spoiling us with a crapload of little details. love it
Oooooo!!!
Thank you, I was wondering who else caught this 👏
Seeing the "A Different World" parody shot was worth the whole episode as far as I'm concerned.
My fav from the episode lol
Big facts I was like ayo I see u culture lol
That part blessed me.
hell yeah! I watched this show all time when I was a kid.
A nod to the culture for sure lol
Never hit "Skip Intro." never.
Never
Miss the intro..... Never 😂😂
Jubilee doing that Fireworks Rasenshuriken no Jutsu was epic
She's gonna be Hokage 🥷😎🤣🤣
ikr brah i was like oh shit is that a naruto refrence dope as fuck loving this show each week
Did you forget to mention that the future jubilee is voiced by alyson court? The original jubilee. She's now playing absicca.
Spiral didn't provided Jubilee and Sunspot cheat codes. She was trying to stop Abscissa, the older Jubilee clone, from giving Jubilee and Roberto cheat codes.
Speaking of Abscissa, she was voice by Alyson Court - the original voice of Jubilee.
True. But it isn't far fetched for Spiral to help the X-Men out. She did before. Also, remember she's just a mutated version of Ricochet Rita.
That smile at the end made me think she was trying to get rid of Mojo and that she was helping them.
Really? I thought Spiral was helping them
The main reference/easter egg in the episode and video completely missed it 🤣
@@MShaiqableI rewatched the scenes with Spiral in it, and there was no clear indication that she was helping Jubilee and Roberto. Sure, one could read her pushing a defeated Mojo aside and grinning as helping them, but it could be interpreted those actions were in response to Mojo being defeated.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Havok, Polaris, and Iceman in the Forge sequence of the Opening Credits
I knew he would miss the “A Different World” reference😂. MT would have caught it!
Summmoffabich
You missed a reference, one of the Sentinels was colored orange & blue. That's a nod to the "Mango Sentinel" alternate color palette from the Marvel vs. Capcom series.
nice catch
@@heavyspoilers Jubilee & Sunspot's character side portraits are also done in the same style as MvC1.
Thanks for these videos. Here’s my help. You completely skipped the A Different World reference. Huge show in Black culture and an instrumental part of my childhood. Also, Spiral didn’t give them the power-ups, it was older Jubilee.
X-Men 2 clone wars on Sega Genesis is still one of the best X-Men games ever.
@5:49 is probably a call back to the very first episode from the 90s when jubilee is abducted by a sentinel from her foster home out of her bedroom
Good to see I'm not the only one who caught that. There is even the line "let him go", which if I remember correctly, Jubilee shouts at a sentinel when it grabs Gambit, at which point she proceeds to fire fireworks at it
I miss the '92 Mojo. He was much more expressive and he had a Gilbert Gottfried-esque voice that made him an absolute hoot to listen to.
While it's great to see him back, he's lost that charm here.
The console says "Montendo" is a reference to Nintendo but the design is actually a Sega Genesis.
Right, I was surprised he didn’t notice this detail. Must not be a gamer!
They even put a side by side comparison with a Super Nintendo and didn't notice they don't look alike.
Did anyone else notice that the older version of Jubilee is play by her original voice actress; Alyson Court?
Omg YEESS!! Had to drink up every minute of that. She sounded exactly the same as she had in the OG series
Was she recast because of her age/voice? Love that they found a way to get her back for an episode!
@@NeroTheAntiHiroI was wondering the same, and I have come to find that Alyson stated she had wanted an Asian American voice actress to take on Jubilee.
@@NeroTheAntiHiro No, she willingly retired from voicing Jubilee to give the role to an Asian actress.
@@microscopic.caterpill yeah I found that out a few days after asking and thought about my comment. 😅 That was nice of her. Though personally I never minded voice actors playing other races cause its a voice but it’s not something I would get upset over, it’s none of my business!
I'm a bit surprised that Longshot wasn't mentioned given that him and Jubilee have met in the second time Mojo appeared on the show and she was interested in Longshot (she even lied about her age). I know he appears in the character select screen next to Magik, but it's something I've noticed. I'll admit, I'm a fan of the guy.
You also missed the "different world" reference which was a spin off of the cosby show about college/school life
As soon as I saw the reference in the episode I herd the theme song lol
I’m really glad they did Jubilee justice in this episode unlike the movies. Her powers just look awesome in this episode man.
Agreed! I think this episode has the best use of her powers I've seen in a long time that isn't from a comic. X-Men 97 has been doing the characters perfectly so far, in my opinion!
@@Marvelousgamer7697 right?? It’s so creative
Does the FOX-TV "Generation X" movie count? [DUCKS :)]
@@IsiahBradley yes that… pilot 💀
The movies totally gave her the shaft, dude. It's, like, so uncool!
When Jubilee and Sunspot are first dropped by the Sentinel you can see Sunspot hitting a parked car. Does anyone else think that was a nod to Street Fighter 2 when you have to destroy the car?
@joshtworzydlo Definitely a reference, it's the same car.
What about Mojos comment he was going to get Dazzler but she had another "gig". No way it's a DP3 tease?🤔
You missed the A Different World Easter 🐣 lol. Great 90's sitcom
I have a new found respect for Jubilee's powers after this episode
Glad the episode checked off all the nostalgia boxes. Other than that, uh, well. This episode exists is all i can say
My nostalgia senses went crazy seeing that the Motendo basically had a copy of Xmen Mutant Apocalypse in it. Cool little Easter egg 😁
I was lookn at that.
Thunderbird can be seen really quick when Jubilee and Roberto got warp to Genosha concentration camp...
The irony is that I had a Nintendo 64 in 1997. First episode gave me a flashback in which I was in middle school bragging to my friends on the quad about having Super Mario 64 😅
Such a missed opportunity in that they could have had that infamous quote from Magneto in the original arcade say "hello X-Men, welcome to die!"
I was waiting for him to say he was the Master of Magnet
It's a Sega Genesis knock-off, not Super Nintendo
Motendo was awesome, a dopamine dream
I’m sorry…I love new rockstars…and yes mt used to work for them but you guys you guys have them beat…huge huge fan…thank you for pointing out everything we don’t see and the adlibs are on point…thank you for everything and the distractions from the world I don’t want no parts of…👍🏽🤘🏽✊🏽🖖🏽
An Easter Egg you missed, was "A Different World" sitcom
I would've loved if they flipped through other xmen Mojo shows like Interdenominational cable lol
Clearly skipped “A Different World” reference 🤔 an American comedy sitcom that ran from 1987-1993 🤷🏽♂️
So you just missed the A different world reference?
It might be before his time and he *is* from the UK.
I was thinking the same thing.. but I don’t believe he would know what A different World is
Different time different country. Why assume he would know it?
He prolly didnt watch a different world to know🤷🏽
Research people.. it could be called "due diligence" if you will ..
Mojo gave me major Screwball vibes from Insomniac Spider Man.
X-MEN 97 is really packing in the fan service LONGSHOT !! that was amazing
Did he miss that the Motendo cartridge was a variant of the original X-Men cartridge from Sega Genesis?
7:40 also reminds me of the third person view in Contra in NES
Dude you missed the "a different world" reference. It was a spinoff of the Cosby show in the 80s. My mom had it on all the time. The theme song is burned into my head lol.
Paul missed a lot of reference likely to get his Easter egg video out first. Screen Crush did a better job than Paul. Cue the "F**k you, Ryan Arey!" clip.
Love your breakdowns Paul! Thanks for awesome content as always :) One thing you missed from the opening credits is that Bishop is no longer in the opening credits since he has also left the team to go back to the future with Nathan.
I personally miss the tie-in with "Rom: Spaceknight", as it was Forge trying to recreate Rom's 'Neutralizer' that lead to Storm's depowering 😅
Jean is back to her classic hair style in the intro, meaning that the long hair was an ACTUAL RED HAIRING TO NOT BE JEAN YOOO
YOOOO
Ahh u did not mention jubilee’s bed!! That is so original Pink Ranger inspired!!
Hey, really nice of Disney to hire Harvey Wienstien to be the villain of this episode.
HAHAHHAHA!
Polaris is is in the opening credits too
The console in jubilees room is definitely an OG Sega Genesis. I still remember the blood code for mortal Kombat: ABACABB
My favorite part of this *HeavySpoilers - XMen’97 ep:4 Breakdown* was T2’s brief but impactful cameo!! 😂 1:02
Why?
Ok I burst out laughing at the Citizen Kane reference. Take my thumbs up!
I agree that they did Jubilee justice in this episode. She got snowed in the films and was such a huge part of the team for me back in the day.
Definitely wasn't expecting two eps. in one but it was fun to watch.
And what a cliffhanger!
We had a tornado hit us about a mile away just SE of Atlanta. I wanted to watch X-Men early last night but man it was a little intense a few hrs ago. So I’m gonna go watch the episode and come back to this video 😂
Ah hope everyone’s ok mate, can imagines that’s really scary
Had one about a mile from my house to in KY. Lots of the US got bad weather yesterday. Taiwan got it worse though.
Hope everything is ok I live in Atlanta
I live west of Atlanta, around six flags. I knew there was a tornado watch but I didn’t know one landed
I've read that jubilee could be an omega level mutant if she ever learned to fully control and harness her powers.
I've heard Jubilee could be an Omega Level Mutant if the WRITERS decide to do that with the character
I loved this episode. While I think, "A Different World," was also being referenced, I think that you caught most of the major elements of the episode. What I found interesting was how Lifedeath integrated The Adversary, especially in his Unchained/True Form. That's a drastic alteration from the source material, with Lifedeath being about acceptance and The Adversary being about the same-only accepting one's mutant heritage.
Jubilee’s bed got a power ranger pattern
Kinda bothers me this show isn’t released on Saturday morning lol
Era accurate the late 90s was the start of computer games replacing tv shows as entertainment.
Yes, but not dominant.
I wouldn’t say they replaced anything. Shows and games are still very popular. It’s just another form of entertainment.
@@baddreams123451 Your right replace is to strong a term. Becoming a direct competitor to television shows is more accurate.
@@godking idk I still don’t see one hurting the other but you could be right. I haven’t looked it up. It’s just my opinion.
Heavy spoilers doesn't play around. Never been this early.
6:30am est this man is on his stuff 🫡
Should have waited and did a better video.
Definitely
This video was crap
Missed multiple obvious easter eggs
Multiple mistakes
Poor all around
He gets some of them early.
13:54 Black Panther's face in the contours of the moutain ridge
I thought that was the owl
you missed the Mystique and bastion easter 🥚
Spider and a scorpion? Technically, MOJO has a mechanical bottom half based solely off of a scorpion. Considering that scorpions are arachnids like spiders
Also Alyson Court did voice Old Jubilee. She was original voice. which was a nice touch.
I’m not paying for Disney + Chanel until they release all episodes
The wanted poster brought me back to og marvel vs capcom 1 and 2 so hard 😭😭😭
The older Jubilee in the episode was clearly a nod to Doctor Who "The Girl Who Waited"...with the two Amy Ponds.
Storm and Black Panther are currently divorced in the comics
[SINGS] "Let's go to the mall....today!" :) LOL!!! THANKS, Paul!!!! You forgot the wall Jubilee and Sunspot was behind--with the posters. It was a homage to the original TPB cover of "Days of Future Past" [PAUL JUST MENTIONS IT]. Uh, never mind :)
Haha the climax of King Kong
Holy shit the rosebud reference nearly killed me. so good
Whether intentional or not. Forge & Storm represented a people stolen from their land or land stolen from them. LifeDeath has such philosophical aspects in the comix. Especially part 2, Ororo caring for a pregnant woman and seeing new life. Appreciate more now that I’m older. Really never was done before…. A humanist story.
Could you tell who the characters were in the poster referencing DOFP and the player select menu? I know we saw the Rasputins but there was at least one other.
When Storm got into the chamber she was reacting badly due to her claustrophobia.
I loved being in an arcade and hearing someone doing Colossus’s special move…. HUUUURG!!
You can tell how happy Paul is with this series 😂
Love your work dawg me and my dad always catch a breakdown after a new episode of anything you cover even the older stuff you branch out to, awesome knowing we aren’t the only ones looking for things like this
Thank you 🙏
😂😂😂 not the rosebud! "50 pence! Insert coin!"
Will wait till part 2 is released to judge the episode but didn’t like how they split this one up into two separate stories
Love the Tron reference
The picture of Forge in his military uniform, he is with Dr. Adler and BASTION!!! The Sentinel made from Mastermold and Nimrod!!!!!
Last week, Storm was in Dallas. This week, she must've been in Utah. I appreciated the 16-bit graphics and music. It would have been better if Motendo didn't look like a Sega Genesis console.
The montendo logo is a blend of Nintendo and Mega Drive/ Genesis. The console is based off the MegaDrive too. You kinda gotta be a gamer to catch that, I suppose!
8:35 I don't think spiral is giving the cheat codes. The person in the spiked helmet is.
Older jubilee
Why is boba fett standing behind the blob in that one shot where he's dirt farming in the prison yard?
I Noticed THAT As Well.
Probably just Disney showing off their different properties
Bishop got the Barry white facial 🤣🤣
Thank you Paul.
Welcome to the HeavySpoilers Show. I'm ya host DEFINITION 😈
I’m more for storm howling up with wolverine.
The pteradactyl they fought is Sauron from the Savage Lands
I got this notification as Episode 3😅
2:57 The motendo looks more like a sega genesis than a supernintendo.
Mojo taking on Arcade’s modus operandi, it works! Next go around he needs to be Social Media connected, motivated by “views” and “smashing Like buttons”.
When I realized the old Jubilee was being voiced by the voice actor from the original series I almost shed a tear 😢.
Love both episodes, I didn't two episodes appeared at the same time. And Oh this two episodes new intro show original Jean with hair tied up and also original Jubilee voice older variant Jubilee
You skipped the nod to the iconic show 'A Different World' 6:41 which ran from 1987-1993
Guess he didn't get that in the UK. Would have been funny if it was Gambit doing the "Baby, please" wedding scene to Rogue
Not sure if we had that in the UK. I've never heard of it
so mojo feeds off of cheers, and the owl loves misery. its neat to me cause i just reread the outsider(and rewatched the show) by Stephen king. el cocou the tear drinker feels like a theme
I just watched the episode and a breakdown is already ready 😂
3:47 morph is wild bro!
Not them really giving us Culture with “A different World” title card😂😂😂 I hollered when I saw it
at 6:25 whilst pointing out Domino.. You cropped the exact same frame you used at 15:00 where one can Clearly see Sunspot at the right of screenshot
6:25 ngl i thought that was Boba on the right🤣
cool review
