And this was just the first of many defeats for poor Mai. I think she didn't beat anybody in an on-screen duel until Jean Claude Magnum.
As we all know, a very important character who's also a very talented duelist.
At least she gets to beat Pegasus in the Orichalchos Arc... Even if he was never that much of a duelist given what made him so OP was his Millennium Item
From what i renember, Mai beat Jean, then Pegasus and Joey in the Orichalcos Arc, all off them were fillers lol. So she didn't really beat anyone on screen.
@@AshuroBR and even then, Joey really didn't want to fight Mei because he didn't want her losing her soul, so he wasn't in his full skill power too.

The choice to use duel arenas instead of the tables in the manga makes a lot of Duelist Kingdom duels funnier or not make sense, this being one of them. The entire point of Mai's Aroma Tactics is that Mai knows what her face down hand consists of by smelling the perfume she sprayed on her cards, while her opponent is distracted by her "psychic predicting" ability to play effectively.
Moving the duelist so far apart and elevating them off the ground completely ruins the point of the strategy, since the only person capable of seeing Mai's facedown hand is Mai herself. Bystanders can't see from the side (0:20) and the duelist in front of her can't see them either (0:33), due to the walls. For all anyone knows, Mai's just playing with her hand face up.

I forget which episode(s) it was in, but I think there's a built-in screen that lets you see the other player's physical cards. If it works via camera and not sensor, this might've actually worked?
This is true although they do play on tables aswrll as shown in the early stages and they mostly switch to arenas due to kaibas work creating the duel arena which when it’s first displayed is one of the the very first ones so up until duelist kingdom Mai’s strategy was likely played on a table so her using it her is more likely just habit formed from playing on tables, even in Pegasus’s flash back with bandit Keith they played on a table so the arenas are very new at this point

Interestingly, this actually makes Joey seem a lot more capable, since it was Yugi/Atem who gave him the pep talk in the original episode. Here, it just looks like Joey drew the out and found the line through his own intuition. Good work, Joey!
Thinking back to this moment even if she did give all her cards a scent it still would take some skill to identify EVERY card. Considering she may be running a basic 40 card deck or more and some scents may blend with eachother this would make Mai have a god level nose.
Humans actually have a really good sense of smell! But I'm not sure of a way for the scents to survive a shuffle. Unless they're sleeved and the scent is inside the sleeve, maybe?
Not to mention that smell isn't a directional sense the way sight and hearing are. It just detects the presence or absence of something in the air you breathe.
Unless Mai has some kind of physics-breaking nose, the only way she could determine which card smelled like what would be by sensing which scents got stronger or weaker as any given card moved closer to her. Not impossible when she's drawing a card, but hard to do covertly when they're on the table in front of you. So Mai probably has good memory, too.
Going by traditional rules you can have up to 3 copies, assuming 3 copies on a 30 deck is 10 distinct cards ie 10 distinct smelles
She could pull it off, the real issue is one fragrance overpowering the other
@keepitsecret-dl1prYeah, a person having a god-like smelling sense would totally defeat the realism Yu-Gi-Oh is going for. Im just glad we had the powerful artifacts that can grant super powers and seal spirits, just like in ancient egypt where they fought with stone tablets to kill each other

When he made that wide smile I was like "it's time wizard, isn't it?", for context I haven't watched it in ages but I remember his gimmick.
These are absolute gold! They highlight both the absurdity of the early duels and just how easily things can be summed up. The lack of dialogue adds a certain humour too
Just looking at this duel without talking it looks like a high skilled player with a well structured deck dueling against a guy who have a bunch of bricks in his deck vut wins by top draw 😂

This is so funny. Here's this lady who for some reason decides to play without looking at her hand -- her deck smells horrible, like the olfactory equivalent of 10 bands playing different songs at the same time -- and then there is this kid who apparently has the worst hand of all time, and he is really broken up about it, he shakily draws this one bullshit card that basically gives him an instant win condition and that's the duel.

Neither he nor puzzle has any such ability, rather, as manga clearly explains, it's intrinsic to all duelists and works similarly to gravity of fate in jojo - if your willpower is strong enough, you can even bend the fate itself and create a miracle. Atem being the king of games has the strongest willpower, which is why he always finds a way out of any dire situation. Willpower is also what helps Jonouchi to pull wins with all these terrible gambling cards he uses.

My personal theory is, due to Pegasus not talking. He never explained the rules, so that's why everyone is cheating.
No need for that, the whole thing is that there are basically no rules in season 1. Kaiba bastard that he is established rules so that he had a chance of winning against Yugi.

Joey vs mai but no monologues
The thing that always got me with Mai’s ‘psychic strategy’ is that it literally gave her no advantage at all. It might help against someone like Pegasus, but Joey can’t read her mind. So it literally serves no purpose at all.
It was just to mess with the adversary, and it did work with Joey at the beginning of the duel

i love seeing people seemingly discover for the first time how often -- since episode 1!!! -- characters in the first season of yugioh just didn't attack for game when they had an overwhelming advantage or weren't shown drawing a card at the start of their turn and so on. i mean it, i love it. easy to take for granted how modular and refined "duel scriptwriting" became in card game anime but they were figuring out a LOT while figuring out how to adapt yugioh and also, like, spawning the entire hobbyani genre.
In the manga it is said that you can't attack when playing Elegant Egotist. Also direct attacks just didn't exist during Duelist Kingdom.
@@JackOfen you're right! the thing with duel writing of course is that if an effect or rule is not explicitly stated in the anime than it essentially doesn't exist there-- something the writers would come to gradually realize as it made the half-pasted manga character's actions much more bizarre when they were bound by invisible rules that hadn't had their explanations pasted over as well. to be clear, i don't think this is a negative of the show. it adds to the charm of season 1

This whole, ESP im psychic, never made sense to me. Like okay, you know what card each is cuz you perfumed them essentially cheating lol, bjt how does this actually distract the player?
keep in mind Mai is supposed to be like this super good duelist who wins championships and stuff
and then she loses to Joey... and PaniK, and *Tea*... and Joey again...
In this duel though Joey was pure luck, drawed the right card at the right time.
With Tea she forfeited the duel. Still a loss no matter what peeps say.
She wins against a guy that wants to forcefully marry her.
She doesn’t lose to Joey twice. They have 3 duels in the series, with Mai and Joey both having a win and then their middle duel was a draw.
She lost to Panik because he was cheating and intimidating his opponents and hiding his monsters. She lost to Marik and Yugi due to plot armor despite outplaying both of them. And she beat Pegasus and Joey in S4 in a span of a few episodes.
She also had the best and most consistent deck for the time in the show along with maybe Rebecca who had sort of a meta deck.

There was no strategy there. He just drew the right card at the right time.
Edit: you could maaaaaybe say he "baited" her into putting all her monsters into attack mode so she'd lose all her life points in one sweep, but that's a big maybe.
