    Joey Wheeler is without a doubt one of the greatest duelists of his generation and proved that he was more than capable of keeping up with Seto Kaiba and even the King of Games.
    But before Joey was the Number 3 duelist in the world, he was a total beginner that didn’t even know how to properly build a deck and on his journey from noob to pro he made a lot of mistakes and misplays, both in his duels and his deckbuilding.
    So today we’re going to be looking at Joey’s 10 worst cards, how they slowed him down from proving himself as a true duelist, and why these cards are just as unlucky in the actual TCG.

    Joey's arc truly embodied the story of many of us back in the day.
    First, we didn't know what we were doing, and filled our decks with useless garbage, misplaying all the time.
    But eventually, we learned and adapted... by shoving a Jinzo into our deck and let it carry us.

      Yeah, that's why I feel people need to give Yuma more credit cause Yuma is also a reflection of young duelists getting into the game but being really bad at it and too stubborn to listen to their mentor's advice. Sure Yuma is "annoying" but his story is very relatable to many kids trying to get into the game and while he relies on Astral's advice a lot, his final duel against Astral was a perfect way to genuinely show how much he has grown, relying on his own Gagaga deck and the one Utopia card he was allowed to have to secure a victory. Plus his Zexal morph was super cool even if technically it didn't do anything except act as a "Skill" which would allow him to use the Zexal cards, but his Shining Draw was also a skill anyway and Skills are a thing...in the Speed Duel format. XD

      There's an obscure fan format in Magic the Gathering called Kangaroo Court in which rather than follow the rules as written on the card, you RP reasons for the cards to work as per your own descriptions. Naturally this requires another player to act as a judge.
      Duelist Kingdom especially reminded me of that.

      It was based off the original manga where Yugi would get possessed by the Pharaoh who was the "King of Games" as in purely shadow games. Yugi would get put into a brutal life or death situation and the Pharaoh would take over and play an evil game against the opponent as their punishment. One of those happened to be duel monsters and it took off.

    • @MarioMastar
      @MarioMastar Před 5 měsíci +36

      Yusei is an example of a good player making the most of what he had, but Yusei is an adult and acts like how an adult player forced to play the game to survive would likely play the game. It's interesting because it's what makes 5Ds so good when you're older and can appreciate the story it's trying to tell. Thus even though the characters are total opposite in maturity, people who relate to Yusei could look back at Joey and smile thinking "Man I wonder if I played my old deck now how good I'd be? Maybe there was a strat I just overlooked back then?" Sounds like a good time for a memory lane duel. I personally found out I REALLY Love Rex's dino cards a lot cause I just love dinosaurs.

    • @kyuubinaruto17
      @kyuubinaruto17 Před 5 měsíci +30

      That's exactly the issue of why Joey's cards are so bad. His lack of strategy and initial non-inclusion of any spell/trap cards is from inexperience, but his bad cards are from lack of money. In the manga it's shown that the dad he lives with is a drunk and in debt when he got onto a (rigged to lose) game show to win some money.
      Since he doesn't have the cash for the good cards, he has to rely on gamble cards or cards with a harsh cost to get the same great effects that people like Kaiba get for free.

      Keep in mind that in the anime there is no difference between REBMD and and Red eyes equipped with Metal morph as Joey is never seen playing the actual card both times he’s used it. Also back when Joey first used it against Keith the LP value was 2000 and if Red eyes had its attack modifier it would depleted Keith’s LPs when he attack Barrel Dragon and that would’ve been too anti climactic for an anime duel

    • @ianslee4765
      @ianslee4765 Před 5 měsíci +7

      @@novamaster9645 I agree, the real life cards(that should be extra deck cards) that FORM in duelist kingdom should honestly just not be included as "worst cards" for the characters.
      But that is what I'm saying, that ISNT the red eyes black metal dragon card. That's red eyes effected by metalmorph

    • @DukeSkylocker
      @DukeSkylocker Před 5 měsíci +3

      This definitely was a case of the OCG/TCG trying to explain away the anime. When it was used in Duelist Kingdom on Zoa and Red Eyes it turned then into machines and gave them a 400 atk boost but didn't give them the boost of gaining half the target's atk points. However, later on, Metalmorph would be used in the same way as it's actual card effect, so they tried to explain that inconsistency by basically saying "well it's because Joey and Bandit Keith actually used that card to summon Red Eyes B Metal Dragon and Metal Zoa respectively, even though it would make no sense why anyone would do that."

  • @AzurknightOMEGA
    @AzurknightOMEGA Před 5 měsíci +68

    I think what's weird about Metal Dragon is that technically, Joey didn't really summon it. He just equipped Metal Morph to Red Eyes and it just sort of morphed into Metal Dragon and being more like a weird pseudo card. The same kind of applies to Metal Zoa and Heavy Metal King. Just weird early Yu-Gi-Oh shenanigans.

    • @kyuubinaruto17
      @kyuubinaruto17 Před 5 měsíci +9

      Same thing with Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon. In the manga Kaiba remarks that he can't draw a card to possibly help him stop Yugi's combo because he still technically has 5. Two regular, and the 3 Blue Eyes. BEUD isn't technically a card, hence why Kaiba can resurrect a Blue-Eyes once one of it's heads is cut off.

    I didn't see these points mentioned in the video or comments, so I'm gonna mention them.
    1) Book of Moon saw play because it is a quick-play spell, otherwise it would've been just as bad as Block Attack.
    2) Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon is even worse than described in the video because it has to be summoned from the Deck. If you draw it, it is dead in your hand, and you aren't summoning it unless you shuffle it back in the deck with something like Reload or Magical Mallet.

    Not sure if it'd count as a "bad card that Joey used", but one of the riskiest Spell Cards he played was "Roulette Spider". Don't even know if it's been released IRL, but I know that it had an even higher risk of backfiring on him than Time Wizard. Joey used that in his first Battle City duel against Espa Roba on the latter's ace monster, Jinzo, where it was spun like a roulette that would only stop when Espa told it to. There were FIVE potential targets. Two of them were the duelists directly while the other three were any of the other monsters on the field, with Espa making a comment in his head that Joey's deck was so lame that he had nothing to lose. Upon ordering Jinzo to stop spinning, it pointed at Espa's only other monster: Reflect Bounder. Both were destroyed because of Reflect Bounder's effect while winning Joey the duel.

    Leogun has stats that aren’t justifiable for its level, because in the manga at the time monsters typically had much higher levels, because tributing wasn’t a thing yet, and when this card was brought to the actual game, they kept its level, the same even though a lot of other cards of similar power scaling had lower levels now, so they could still be summoned easy since levels mattered more now

    • @bijuutamer729

      It’s also worth noting is that Leogun actually has good stats for Duelist kingdom where tribute summoning wasn’t required. And especially in comparison to the rest of Joey’s deck.
      It’s also odd he owns it in the first place as a lot of Joey’s card choices was because he was poor. Leogun would be his lucky break in canon.

      That new Swordsman fusion monster is a beast of a card. Combined with the other support cards and the new fusion spell it can do some serious damage, even win the duel outright if your opponent cannot stop it. I have already built a deck around it and whilst it is a bit slow, the payoff is well worth it. My only complaint with the new set is that Bonfire only works specifically with Pyro monsters and not Fire monsters so it is mostly useless to Flame Swordsman. Had it worked with Fire monsters then Swordsman would have been unstoppably fast.

      A lot of cards are deliberately made bad to be pack filler or for the sake of an anime moment. Despite how careful Konami is about ensuring the cards are balanced (within thier own archetype at least), it's clear some cards are better than others, but a LOT of early game cards were simply terrible even for the time. Even as a kid most of us knew what metal morph on it's own does, the ONLY benefit to getting Metal Dragon out is you could tank a 2700 opponent but...that's literally it. and you're likely going to run it over with Red eyes anyway unless it has some protection or a potential equip destruction. So nich of a situation I could only see it happening in the earliest Yugioh.

      That happens an infuriating number of times. When these characters BUILT THE DECK and forgot what thier own cards do. I kind of get the opponent may have cards and they likely can't read what the opponent uses given the nature of the battle field, but that was used as a plot point in Arc-V where players genuinely kept their cards a secret and would only reveal the effects AFTER the moment came up. IIRC Yuri was the king of doing that given how ridiculous his anime-only field spell was. It kind of legitimized when Yami Yugi would just make up rules as he went in the Duelist Kingdom era.

      That would make the card genuinely interesting. Being able to activate the effect from the hand or graveyard to always have a risky dice roll to gain or lose advantage. That sounds perfectly in the heart of Yugioh, than the whole "Big play or lose it all" that most gamble cards do. Since the biggest problem with the original is that you have to protect it...for the chance of giving your opponent some benefit. Even if the card wouldn't be "good", it'd still be a lot more fun to play for casual games, rather than a complete waste of a draw.

That and I REALLY appreciate him mentioning Duel Links a lot more, as it's a lot more casual friendly and has it's own meta so a card that's terrible in the TCG may be one of the best cards in Duel Links due to the pace and power level and that's the way us Duel Links players recognize the cards. (Link monsters aren't nearly as powerful in Duel Links due to the powerlevel of the cards released so far and the limited board space. Considering this is about the anime, I would say that Leogun should not be in the list as the only time it was summoned was before tributes were required so a 1750atk monster that you can just normal summon isn't actually half bad for the time, it just got screwed by the field bonus
    But honestly, Kaiba is right, Joey actually........really sucks, I like the guy but his deck is awful during the whole run of the series if you count only canon material
    Joey's best duels were during the Dartz arc, as it was only up to that point that he managed to get a deck with any sort of theme around it, too bad that during the Kaiba Grand Prix he got screwed again by his bricky hand of useless high level cards
    "But he almost beat Yami Marik"....did he tho? I mean yea you can say that Marik got plot armor because Joey just needed to survive long enough to just declare an attack with Gearfried but really....Marik was obviously toying with him all duel, clearly just wanted to prolong his suffereng during the shadow game as Marik's level of play vs Joey is nowhere near close to everything he prepared against Yugi, yes at the end of the day that hubris could've costed Marik the win but honestly, Joey deserve to be placed above Marik, HELL HE DOESN'T EVEN DESERVE TO BE IN THE FINALS, I'm not trying to sound like Kaiba here, but really, the only reason he beat Odion was because Marik ordered him to stall until he summoned Ra in order to prevent the others from discovering his real identity, Odion had his boss monster ready against a Joey with a literally empty field and yet did nothing for like 3 turns just to wait until he drew Ra and after that, did Joey managed to defeat the fake Ra using the free turns Odion gave him? No, he literally only won because he stood up after getting hit with magic lightning, had the real Ra not gotten angry and attacked Odion there would've been no way for Joey to do anything to win
    And why was Joey left unable to do anything against Odion and forced to pass for a bunch of turns? Because his deck fucking sucks, the idea of Battle City is to win the opponent's rarerest card and strengthen your own deck, and other than Jinzo, Joey won some of the worst cards out there which of course he had no support for
    Jinzo at the time is pretty much a staple, even if you don't run any machines it's still a 1 tribute 2400atk monster which allows you to negate all traps thus preventing your opponent from stopping your attacks, the only deck in the DM era which would not like to run Jinzo is ironically the person we just discussed, Odion AND EVEN WITH JINZO JOEY COULDN'T HONESTLY BEAT HIM
    But Legendary Fisherman? (and supposedly fortress whale but Mako was a dick and didn't give him the ritual spell) a 1 tribute monster with low atk for its requirements and no way for Joey to use his effect
    And Insect Queen a 2 tribute weak monster with a cost in order to attack (as if he didn't have enough of that with panther warrior) which I think only manages to destroy like 1 or 2 enemy monsters during its whole existance within his deck and every other time is just a dead card in his hand
    Like, he didn't NEED to add those monsters to his deck, they made it actively worse
    But honestly, I could maybe forget all that, I could forget how Joey even during the non canon arcs which I already stated are where his best duels and skills are shown, is still shown as an idiot who needs Yugi to constantly save or like in the Grand Prix arc, little Yugi literally has to teach him (THE SEMIFINALIST OF DUEL KINGDOM) how are chain links resolved (maybe this was just for the viewers, but they could've have Yugi teach that to Tristan or Tea, or EVEN BETTER have JOEY be the one who teaches it), I can also forget his over reliance on luck becuase, he has a pretty good track record, I think he only gets legitimately screwed by luck (without the opponent cheating) 1 once in the whole series (but don't quote me on this)
    I could forgive all that, but what I can't forgive, is the fact that even by the end of the series HE STILL HAS FUCKING BATTLE WARRIOR ON HIS DECK, A FUCKIN USELESS 1000atk warrior who NEVER, EVER, IN THE WHOLE SERIES, DOES ANYTHING, IT IS USELESS 100% OF THE TIME, and he never takes it out of his deck, like if he had no access to better warriors, the most common monster type on the game, it's like if in the ceremonial duel between Atem and Yugi, Atem suddenly summoned fucking BEAVER WARRIOR
    I fucking hate battle warrior with such a passion, yes, Joey uses weaker monsters than it, like Swordsman of Landstar, but at least he can support SoL with gracefull dice, because in the anime instead of adding attack up to a max of 600 like in the TCG it Multiplies the monsters attack up to six times BUT it can only be used on a monster with 500 or less attack, so SoL is the perfect candidate to benefit from it, no wonder they are pretty much always used together
    But....in a cruel twist of fate, Battle Warrior is actually too "strong" to be able to benefit from graceful dice, but Battle warrior sucks at being good and sucks and being bad, it literally sucks at sucking, fucking waste of paper or whatever material the cards are made in the anime for Kaiba to be able to bruise people's hands by throwing one at them
    He is cool dude and good friend but, again, Kaiba had it 100% correct, he is a 3rd rate duelist with a 4th rate deck because indeed his deck is worse than him
    Fuck Battle Warrior, worst card he ever used, and probably worst card anyone ever used in the DM anime

    I feel like Fairy Box should also be considered, because not only is it a gambling card, it's also a gambling card that has a maintenance cost just to keep it around. Plus, since it only really works in the Battle Phase, it can be played around quite easily like other Battle Phase-exclusive cards

    • @nicolaistuhlmuller8718
      @nicolaistuhlmuller8718 Před 5 měsíci +1

      Fairy Box was actually pretty good when it came out. Its main advantage is that it's your opponent who has to gamble, and more often than not they simply wouldn't attack because the risk was too high, potentially stalling for a lot of turns and baiting out removal.

    If the knight's title had been relased now days it's effect would to tribute a speallcaster monster to summon a warrior monster with the same attribute and level, and it still would see play, would be really fun to use.

    4:32 Ok… This one has actually been bothering me on how to improve it, but I think I have an angle now:
    _Time Wizard’s Dragon_ (LIGHT)
    Level 7
    Dragon/Fusion/Tuner/Effect
    “Time Wizard” OR 1 Spellcaster monster + “Hundred Dragon” OR 1 Dragon monster
    _This card that is face-up on the field or in the GY is also WIND-Attribute. If this card is fusion summoned: You can special summon 1 Fusion Monster from your Extra deck that mentions “The Claw of Hermos” in its effects, ignoring its summoning conditions. Once per turn (Quick Effect): You can have this card gain or lose Levels equal to the number of cards you control, and if you do, it gains 200 ATK/DEF for each Level gained or lost. These changes last until the end of this turn. You can shuffle 1 card from your hand, deck or GY into your deck (Quick Effect): Toss a coin and call it. If you call it right, destroy 1 card on the field. If you call it wrong, Your opponent can destroy 1 card on the field, except this card._
    ATK/2500 DEF/2400

    We all been in Joey's footsteps. We ere all beginners and noobies didnt know how to make a deck. We only played the cards that looked coolest and cutest. But when we played for years we get better and taking it more serious. And we learn more combos, stradegies and we play with the cards we love. For Joey he enjoy the game a lot. And doesnt matter what card he use, every card have it's value. Joey remind me when I was a kid and my brother taught me everything about Yugioh and I immediately fell in love with the game Its the only game I played and as countless defeats by Bro I did manage to get quick wins from him showing I've been improved. That helped me irl as I got better in school if I just kept trying. That what I love with Yugioh and other shows they help me to build up my life.
    I dont mind if Joey cards ain't useful, its not what Yugioh is suppose to do tho. Its your mind, your decision and the cards have helped Joey but he improve and use other cards that are useful. Yugi helps him give him Time Wizard which definitely helped Joey a lot through out the whole show. Btw Thousand Dragon if its not strong it still super iconic and one of the first fusion monsters that got introduced and that why its Good. It brings you memories and nostalgia and it can be good in certain situations. Its better than nothing. Its strong as Red Eyes and if you use card right way you can win either way. Hell, ppl make Kuriboh decks and still wins.

    The fact Red Eyes Black Metal Dragon doesn't get the effect of Metalmorph has always baffled me. Like, that sounds like it would make it a pretty neat card for the time if it kept the effect *in addition* to the extra 400 ATK/DEF points it gains with the tribute, but it just doesn't for whatever reason.

    there is one use in the tcg for Black Metal Dragon: In Champion's Pack 1, if you are playing draft, it's the best non-ritual monster ritual material to summon Zera The Mant or Magician of black chaos. Also, you'll be forced to play the card if you're using standard deck sizes anyways.

      Have its effect be "During the Battle Phase, change all Attack Position monsters your opponent controls to face-up Defense Position" in addition to being Quickplay, and it's now not dogwater tier in even old school Yugioh; being a side-grade to Enemy Controller (non-targeting and affects your enemy's entire field at the cost of only being usable in the Battle Phase + not having EC's entire second effect) rather than a direct downgrade.
      Of course, you then have to buff cards like Earthquake and the like, but they're _also_ dogwater tier, so that's completely fine to me.

    I’m surprised that Compensation Mediation wasn’t even mentioned in the list
    Not only is that card basically a luck chance card just to negate an attack
    But whether or not you get the benefit, your opponent gets to have 2 cards from their grave and back to the Top of the deck.
    So while you would know that the card they’ll draw as it’s in the graveyard prior, it’s still more of a benefit for the opponent than the user.
    At best you get lucky and end the battle phase. Worse case, you still get attacked, your opponent gets to keep 2 cards from the grave to the deck, and there’s literally negate attack if you want an attack removal trap card

    There was one gamble card I think you missed, worse than dangerous machine.
    Compensation Mediation.
    When your opponent declares an attack, they get to pick 2 cards from their GY, then shuffle them in with this card, then you pick one at random. If you pick the card, the battle phase ends. Then the two cards they picked are placed on top of their decks.
    Your opponent gets any 2 cards back and you get a 1/3 chance to end the battle phase. Awful.

    • @Alibaba-id1cs
      @Alibaba-id1cs Před 5 měsíci +1

      Worst part is that he literally said it in conjunction with the discussion of dangerous machine type 6. So he’s aware of the card existence but didn’t put it on the list for some reason
      While technically it’s not the worst thing in the world to force your 2 grave cards on the top of your deck as the trap user can anticipate on what the opponent drew, it still is overall a downgrade especially when the opponent is allowed to CHOOSE which one
      And on top of all that, there’s literally NEGATE ATTACK. WHY USE COMPENSATION MEDIATION WHEN THERES JUST THAT 😭😭😭
