  • We traveled from Sorrento by train and bus over the mountains to get to our hotel in San Michele which is located on the hills halfway between the coastal towns of Positano and Amalfi. We then took a SITA bus to explore Amalfi.
Amalfi, a picturesque town on the Amalfi Coast of Italy, boasts a rich and storied history. Dating back to the 6th century, Amalfi was once a maritime power and a key player in the Mediterranean trade network. The town was a major maritime republic alongside Venice, Genoa, and Pisa during the Middle Ages.
Amalfi's prosperity was fueled by its strategic location, thriving trade connections, and the production of exquisite handmade paper. The town's maritime influence is evident in the iconic Cathedral of St. Andrew, a stunning medieval structure that overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea. Dedicated to the town's patron saint, the cathedral showcases a blend of architectural styles, including Arab-Norman influences.
Over the centuries, Amalfi faced periods of decline, particularly after a devastating earthquake in 1343 and the subsequent shift in trade routes. However, its historical significance and architectural treasures have endured, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Today, Amalfi attracts visitors with its charming streets, vibrant markets, and breathtaking coastal views. The town's history is palpable in its ancient structures, reflecting a legacy of maritime glory and cultural resilience.
