  • In alien oceans, many seafarers travel to hunt for the great Jable sharks despite the risks that come with it. During one vessel's travel, their crew gets attacked by a giant crustacean creature called a Thanapod. Now faced with the consequences of the attack, Torrin makes a deal with the Thanapod-thus, they must now decide whether to follow the creature's demands and sacrifice innocent lives or put themselves in danger for the good of all.

      @Pinko Slink To criminals of course.

    • @uraniumfever5297
      @uraniumfever5297 Před rokem +10

      @Pinko Slink You say that, but if you saw someone being stabbed or heard someone being raped, even if you know you couldn’t do anything logically, you will still feel the initial guttural fear and call to action. Imagine, the guilt you would feel if you saw that and knew you couldn’t do anything, it’s not like you would say “oh well, morality is just an option based on opinion! That does not involve any instinctual endogenous chemicals time to turn my empathy off like a switch!…” it doesn’t work like that. Morality extends to intrinsic feelings of compassion and empathy, which for the sake of order and society, most of us possess.
      And even in the cases of people who aren’t able to be good, because they live in unfortunate circumstances, it’s only because they don’t have the choice most of the time. People who are born into disgusting, unfortunate, crime-ridden underworlds very rarely are educated and raised under righteous people and circumstances and thus it is all they know, however, they might still share kinship, trust, humour and moral code among each other, and even in the case of some criminals who don’t, they aren’t necessarily excluded from being capable of using those emotional/social centres in their brain.
      But I assume I’m talking to someone, who is capable of discerning good from bad. And so a quick question… if you are so sure of this notion of optional morality, then why aren’t you outside raping, killing, stealing and destroying as much as you please?
      Possible Answer 1: “because I would get caught by the police”
      Counterpoint: Why wouldn’t you just kill yourself? If human beings derive meaning from things like religion, hope, science (all of which revolve around a moral core) and in your case you find moral values optional and thus less meaningful, then what reason would you have to not wreak as much havoc as possible and then quickly exterminate yourself, if not a moral one? How would the authority of the police intimidate you. If you outright deny the potency of morality, why would things like rank, civil order and law; the gut-wrenching shame of being judged by peers, society, a court, your family, strangers mean anything to you? If in your estimation you can simply change your state of mind, as easily as blinking, because it means nothing. And unless I’m talking to a genuine psychopath (which I’m probably not) all of these things would probably come crashing down on top of you, like an awesome wave of water. “What if they catch me?” “What will they think” “Why did I do this”… whether you are vile or virtuous (psychologically speaking, most humans are a healthy mix of both) you fear authority, you feel regret, you feel shame and self-loathing. All of these feelings are endogenous and chemical, they linger, they amplify. If you are capable of them, you’re not controlling them.
      Possible Answer 2: “well, because I don’t want to kill, rape, and steal!”
      Counterpoint:
      Firstly, ok fine, but what reason would you have to not want to except a moral one? We are descendants of early humans who operate in tribes, who would rape, kill, steal to ensure survival and for thousands of years that was the order of things. Think about survival of the fittest for a moment. In that period of time so many rivals where killed and thus the genetic programming for that type of behaviour was more refined. But skip forward a few hundred-thousand years and our brains expanded in volume and capacity to consider things like “others feelings” “suffering” “doing unto others, as I would want done unto me” this ability to cooperate with larger groups of people led to this society, which is still, separated into nations, cities, gangs, families, friends etc, which suggests that some of that very old tribal DNA still persists in some space in our subconscious (which we aren’t aware of) and all the assorted nasties that come with it. Where am I going with this? My point is, even if you didn’t have the conscious urge to partake in that behaviour, you would have no trouble vilifying it, protecting someone from it, being vengeful. All of these are interlinked to our inherent tribalism and the knowledge of others suffering, protect your own for everything outside of it is evil, so to speak. That hasn’t really changed it’s just that now we are much more social and so we might think of “family” as our “nation” or our “city” or, if you are particularly virtuous, your family might be the “globe” . You might not be a rapist, but I’m sure deep down you would have no problem watching one hang, if the transgression angers you enough. Again, these feelings are things you would have no choice in deciding. It just so happens that a lot of us (I would hope most of us) empathise that a crime, such as rape, is a sickening act of abuse which deserves to be quashed. And that’s what someone’s moral character is based on, how far their circle of inclusion and trust extends beyond themselves, I’m sure that criminal might feel that everyone is out to get them because their social circle only includes themselves, which limits their ability to empathise and function within a group.
      If your point is that of a nihilistic sentiment, which implies that nature is simply efficient, neither bad nor good, then you would probably be right. However, morality would not persist through our development into very intelligent and social creatures if it wasn’t going to serve any function. And thus even if not present in the universe in an objective sense, it is in a subjective human sense/World because it is paramount to society, for as of present you are a still hardwired this way, inescapably. in the case of this video, a moral decision was made by a fictional character, and it saved more people than it killed. To nature, that is efficient. Morality doesn’t appear to be ornamental or beautiful, rather utilitarian and functional and denying it as an intrinsic part of of the programming that constitutes most people (including yourself, I’d imagine) would be the same as suggesting that humanity, as of today, could function without eyes. One of morality’s other applications is to help decisions making. Sometimes you need to make the right decision under time. You’re aren’t going to be considering the existential conundrum of Arthur Schopenhauer when you’re entire family is at gunpoint. Which is why its strange to bring up, what I assume, is existential philosophy onto a video which considers human morality. Those two are separate. You can say that the lives of innocent people “don’t matter” in a more universal sense,but they will to you, which is my point.
      And what I find interesting, is even if you took the time to respond to this comment. You would still be applying a moral judgement to it. If you disagree with me then, again, it flips back to an “us and them” concept in which you either disagree with me and perpetuate the tribalism (which in my estimation morality stems from) and go against the point I have raised by thinking that I am wrong and should be corrected to fit under your ideal (I.E the reason you commented in the first place, even if subconsciously).
      If you agree with me, the same principle applies.
      Despite how long this comment is, I am not angry in the least with you, merely engaged.
      But your point is fallacious to some degree, no?
      In conclusion:
      You can change the direction of the moral compass, but cannot make do without it altogether, for it directs where you go.

      @@Gundumb781 Finally somebody who understands where im coming from! Thanks dude! Lol. Seriously, lemme put it another way: when i go to see Star Wars movies, im accepting certain things about the movie to enjoy it right? I.E. Space society, Jedi, Darkside, powers etc. But theres also little things that hold it all together i.e: gravity is a thing, people and other living things can love, need to eat n drink to live and get old. Also everything gets explained eventually in the movie. So in this crab movie, did they ever explain (like u said) about the existence of this giant crab? Or why it has a tentacle that can use a dead human body to communicate with? No they didn't. But they just want you to accept that this thing exist. No past to explain it. So the story is weak already. It's a smart crab that came on board to kill everybody and eat them all but it fell into a hole and settled down. Why didnt it just destroy the ship and eat all the crew in the water? Oh because it talked with the guy and struck a deal right? Ok if this thing was smart to begin with, why didn't it start off with trying to communicate in the first place? Grab a human and talk to the crew? Does a body need to be dead for it to use it like that? No it came on board to kill everyone. Hitching a ride was an after thought. Also why did they need to draw sticks to see who goes down to talk with it? If you paid attention, there's a big friggin hole in the deck. They can all look down and see it. Also the crew would be able to hear the convo the crab had with the guy. Do you just accept everything you see in a movie and not have any questions? A lot of these movie makers don't bother to make sense of little details in a story because they're counting on their audience to be dumb. I don't watch like that.

      That's an interesting detail that I haven't noticed even after rewatching a bunch.
      I think it gives a rich layer to the story. If the creature hadn't broken the floor under it's own weight it would have surely devoured Turk whole or tossed him overboard like the other crew member and proceeded to kill everyone else on board.
      Or, it would have killed enough to send a message, and similarly used Turk's or another sailor's body to communicate where it wanted to be taken. Either way, makes it even more interesting that it curved its starvation urges and those of its children to keep the Turk corpse intact so it could keep communicating below deck

    He should have started with what he ended with. Gain its trust, inform the rest of the crew so they can quietly get the lifeboats ready, then go back down and set the barrels on fire before escaping the burning ship.
    Chances wouldn’t be great on the open water, but still a chance and you wouldn’t have to worry about feeding it.

      You missed the plot, the whole crew for their own safety was willing to sacrifice innocent people's lives on the island. That's why he decided to eliminate the crew cause none of them were good people.

      @@dmitry8218 I’m not disputing they’re bad people, I’m just questioning why they even entertained the stupid crab’s demands from the very beginning. There was nothing stopping them from just leaving the ship on lifeboats with whatever supplies they could carry and setting it ablaze behind them.
      It’s not like the crab could steer the ship itself, it needed them for that. They always had that power over it, it just makes little sense to me why they went along with it at all.

    • @Vaprous
      @Vaprous Před rokem +21

      @@veritasome5965 Torrin is a a machiavellian sort of human; fundamentally, he's a good person, but he's ruthless as hell. He held that vote to see if there was anyone on board with the deserted island plan, which was the fundamentally good choice since it meant risking self-sacrifice to protect innocent lives. As soon as he realized that they were evil assholes willing to sacrifice an entire island worth of people to save their own skins, he chose to kill them instead so he could make it to the inhabited island and give himself the best chance of survival while ensuring the crab died at the end.
      Basically, as soon as he realized none of the crew were worth saving, he chose the option that maximized his own chance of survival while minimizing the risk to anyone not on the ship. If even a single person chose a circle, I think he would have done differently; but he didn't really expect anyone to when he held that vote, it was just to buy time; he had a pretty good sense where the crew stood when he suggested it.

    • @veritasome5965
      @veritasome5965 Před rokem +10

      @@Vaprous their actions may have been evil in this regard, but I don’t think the crew were fundamentally evil themselves.
      Look at it from their perspective: they’re living a hair’s breath away from a nigh invincible and intelligent giant crab that they’ve already seen gruesomely rip apart and devour their comrades and could do so again to them if the fancy took it.
      And the only thing stopping it from doing so is one crew member negotiating with it who is seemingly coming up with different excuses to justify continually killing them one after the other to keep it fed while keeping himself safe. Can you say you wouldn’t be motivated by crippling existential fear to do something irrational to try and save yourself?
      We all like to think we’d do the right thing in those circumstances, but it’s easy to say and much harder to do when death is staring you in the face, and far from an easy or painless one at that.
      So while their choice to try and take it to an inhabited island to save themselves was reprehensible, I cannot truly hate them for it because it was crippling fear driving them to do so and fear makes people do irrational things they normally wouldn’t do.
      We keep seeing Torrin as the hero of the story, but what if he really wasn’t? What if the perception of him by his shipmates was actually correct…that he wasn’t making them choose out of altruism but simply to make excuses to kill them and feed the crab to keep himself alive?
      He was safe from such choices simply because he had the only gun, so was it really about doing the right thing or just saving himself? It was easy for him to choose a longer course over the inhabited island because he wasn’t the one that could be fed to the crab in order to placate it long enough to reach it, they were.
      Would he still have done the right thing if he didn’t have the gun to enforce his will on the rest of them and knew it could see him fed to the crab instead? We’ll never know.
      That’s why I find this story fascinating, it allows us to look at different perspectives and reach a wide range of conclusions in terms of morality and consequence.

    Torrin is not what you expect these days because our current zeitgeist expect a dire situation like this to get worse with the hero becoming the coward. However while Torren is not what you call heroic, he's certainly honorable in that he looked out for the safety of those on a island full of people and had no intentions to kill the entire crew who wished only to preserve themselves until they tried to kill him.
    His logic is that of a utilitarian and I respect that. We definitely need more genuine stories with people who are willing to risk themselves for the benefit of others.

    I would have to disagree humbly with claims about him being a Good Evil he was indeed a hero thru-and-thru because he didn't have to risk his life to save those Innocents on the island he could have had his crewmates all killed, allow the creature and it's babies to reach the Island full of inhabitants to have a feeding frenzy and just went off and did his own thing (that's if he would have been allowed to live afterwards) instead he used his cunning wits and ruthlessness to not only get rid of those that were evil towards him but a creature that represented the ultimate form of evil therefore in my book he was a hero Undisputed.💯😉👍

      @Pinko Slink To believe in Good and Evil is not immature. No one needs to grow from where they find meaning, purpose and truth if it brings no one else any harm.
      Even so, to suffer is the truest evil. To say that suffering is not bad cannot work, as to suffer *is* to suffer, and one who loves to suffer is not truly suffering.
      As we all avoid suffering, necessarily and by definition, seeking the relief from suffering, then we know that the avoidance of suffering and the elimination of it is the one natural good we can all agree upon. The question then becomes how to eliminate suffering while causing the most suffering.
      The only fool here is you, who makes grand statements without a single deeper thought, who takes the Null with no compromise, and therefore submits themselves to a meaningless existence to which they cannot even deny nor reject. We who hold meaning for ourselves and goodness then, can agree with you that your type are meaningless, and that your opinions bring nothing 'good' to the world but screaming tragedies to the wind.
      Tldr; You're wrong, and I think you are a prick, replying here to preach a philosophy that is not even yours and insult them for being different than you.

    What I like about this story is the fact they don’t explain too much. I’m their reality they have to know these things exist, given the size rate of birth etc. even if other predators were out to kill these crabs it’s not like he killed the last remaining one. If they are not an apex predator, than clearly there are worst things on their version of earth.
