- Eager to return home after a successful job in space, the freight spaceship known as The Blue Goose enters a surge point gate. When the crew wakes up, however, they find themselves lightyears off their course. Thankfully, a repair facility, along with a friendly face, has found them. However, things don’t add up, and perhaps, their situation is far worse than being lightyears away from Earth.

honestly could have been worse, the alien could have been evil and tormented them instead of giving them salvation
Really, the alien was just doing her best in a really shitty situation
Who told u it is salvation. Don't u see his crew members are already dead yet in the simulation one Keep waking up to confront the truth
Or not been able to wipe his mind
@@OverdramaticAngel I don't think she was keeping them alive indefinitely. She was just giving them a nice death
We don’t know that to a certainty; the alien might set up a simulation to better understand humans and to better trap their ships in the future.
If this is horror, it's the most beautiful kind of horror..... It shows just how people just automatically associate what we see as ugly as evil.
that is so true...
Techinally it evil and wrong but the story makes it seem "normal" and you understand both of their points.

Just imagine his luck? He accidentally found out the nicest cool alien in the galaxy, imagine what he would learn if he overcome his fear, how incredible his life would be.
It is just a matter of perspective, the fear Thom has is the real monster, not Greta, if he overcome his fear and accept reality of his situation, he could even call that place home.
I always felt bad for the alien. She's stuck there, anyone who ends up there is stuck there, there's no food or water, and all she can do is try and make death a little more bearable.
😆lol, poor little aliens. they control time and space and create virtual worlds deciphering human mind in real time, but don't have food and water. poor them.

The aliens intentionally trap people there . They are her prisoners

“Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.”
A scarier possibility ? No aliens. Just endless alternate universes full of our evil selves.
nahh big mommy too scary
@@teejaylecapois9741 Or our universe happens to not have aliens and others do.
Depends on your personal attitude. Some may find comfort in either of those truths.
@@dero4378 yes, your right. but i still think one way or another that both are terrifying. tho im pretty dark in general, so i tend to think pestimistic and we are alone.. still need to overcome the great filter, thats prolly our self, our greatest enemy

I actually thought they were gonna reveal that at 8:15 but ig not
I suspect it is every time she feeds on him.
Which belies the claim "we can do this as amny times as it takes."
She's eaten everyone else... and has to survive somehow.
@@looniper3551 at that point when he wakes up 4th time i think. Its written in the book. And no goddamn shes not feeding on him. You fell for the classy trap of "its ugly so it must be bad" trope ^^ Shes literally superkind and doing her best to keep the dude from suiciding like many other humans before. In the book some other aliens make it and accept it but humans always kill themselves.
Now either you can read the comments to find out why or watch it again and try to see the signs that she is actually nice ;) Tip: might be related to her trying to tell him the truth multiple times and trying to ease him in. While also accepting his wish to see the reality if he wishes. Who would do that for his prey? Just keep him in a perfect simulation...
Nvm im dumb....so about the times they did this...Toms ship was "the first human ship to arrive" and afterwards the book says "there were thousands of other human ships coming in the many years after...."
So yeah.. it might be 4th loop or so but it might also have the bee the millionth...
@Random Platypus with Internet no offense, but u just spoiled the book. I would totally read this and had no idea it was a book, like most people casually watching a movie shorts video on yt. Now I will never read the book. Next time, say “hey, there is a novel that explains everything.”
That's actually a very friendly and compassionate Alien
friendly, compassionate, eating everyone.... you'll notice, it had drank the life out of everyone but him, and he is close to death from her feeding off him.
It may be true she really cares about them, but you can really care about a pet pig, until you're starving and need to eat..........
@@looniper3551 She isnt eating them. Even in the book she is revealed to be friendly. She is trapped there too and she doesn’t need to eat. She warps their reality and slowly reveals the truth to them so they don’t go insane by realizing they have been lost and left to die. She even lets other aliens live in her hive that have accepted the fact they are trapped.
He looks like that because he is starving to death.
@@looniper3551 It's a retelling of a book called Beyond the Aquila Rift, and the alien in the episode isn't eating the others that ended up stranded there- the MC is starving to death, notice. The others died before him. It's not an esoteric sort of feeding off of him either, unless you want to go with the interpretation that the angelic symbolism around the alien caretaker is supposed to be an allusion to psychologically parasitic belief structures or something
@@looniper3551 "Hurrr durr its an alien and creepy looking soi it must be evil!" Yeah since she is notally not trying to help him....
And uhh have you seen how spiders eat stuff? Ever thought that the other two died same reason he loooks so fucvked up? Because of starvation?
And yes note comment below which is right she is suuuper nice and actaully a very kind hearted person trying to keep humans from suiciding.
She didnt drink their lifeforces nor take their own liquid. Ray and Suzy died already from the surge tank damage leaving Thom intact but the surge tank can only sustain him for that much until he dies which is why the alien Greta made sure Thom died happy.
This was no Xenomorph queen but a matriarch alien managing a hive giving last rites to the damned.
Moral of the story, don’t take shortcuts in space lol
"Short cuts make for long delays..."
taking shortcut back on earth is a mess sometimes, do it in space??? yeah, asking for trouble XD
Yep, indeed.
I once knew a guy, who knew a guy, who knew a guy, who knew this guy who took a shortcut in space and lost his balls!
Yeah then you wouldn't be able to travel anywhere, it'd take thousands of years
What I got from this was that the alien actually took pity on him because he survived longer than the others. And she's ran this simulation so much that she actually fell in love with him, making it harder to drain him like the rest of the crew, so he may look emaciated but that is her way of trying to keep him alive long enough so maybe keep his mind intact when she reveals her true form. Kind of like solving the mystery of the groundhog day with Bill Murray, but a weird sci-fi crazy version of that
I imagine it's a highly evolved galactic spider-type life-form. Ensnare rare galactic prey, and save them for later. The alien isn't evil, just needs to keep them alive for its own survival. Like humankind raising free-range livestock in a beautiful prairie, ultimately used for food. Not wanting your food to suffer before you eat them.
@@emmakai2243 They were not saved to be eaten later why would any creature bother letting its preys get malnourished?, you should read the original book.
Nothing in the series suggest that the Alien is hostile or wants to eat or drain them, Greta Alien is a like a nurse and a kind benevolent being.
The Book reveals that she runs these simulations to slowly reveal the truth little by little for them to accept it cuz sudden reveal would make them insane and suicide,
Also she is not the only Alien sentient being there, countless other Aliens got stranded there due to same Aquila Wormhole glitch by chance, The Greta Alien doesn't capture these ships, she is just as a victim of the glitch wanted to comfort others as she feels and understands their loneliness and doomed reality,
The Book also suggests some aliens who accepted the harsh reality are still living in the hive.
Book name: Beyond the Aquila Rift by Alastair Reynolds.
Nope. Nope. Nope. She accidentally caught sentient beings instead of brainless space insects for food, so she feels bad.
In the book she does that to tell the truth slowly, because most humans and other aliens go crazy and suicidal when they learn were they are. Her ship also got stranded there.
@@emmakai2243 not letting them suffer before they get slaughtered?? Dang these human seed suckers who say "they are in control" need to take a page out of this aliens playbook.. sheesh
if you think about it... greta is pretty damn nice to go through the effort of taking care of him when their reality is so grim. I mean, she could have just as easily killed him or just let him die. But it looks like he is going to wind up dead regardless due to starvation, but at least he gets to die in a simulation with someone by his side rather than in that horrible reality.
You sir are great for getting that she is actually a suuper great person taking care of people and trying to make them realise whats up without them suiciding themselves
she is probably also lonely
I think I would've still used the illustrations, however, I'd try to ease him into the reality so his brain can adjust as opposed to him witnessing and experiencing everything at once with aliens from the far side of the galaxy.
I mean if you watched the whole episode she even admits to Tom before she ends the simulation that she cares for everyone that ends up there.
It amazes me at how far we've come in the cgi space. Years ago one would have needed an entire rack of gpu's just to render images like this. Now, we can just about do it on one massive gpu, in real time.
It’s not a game. It takes a lot of power to render this stuff. Not one GPU.
Some of these are taking months to render lol they do em on huge farms still
Not a single GPU or in real time.

Indeed right. Or kinda. Basicly normally upon fining out people just would kill themselves. So she keeps them in the vision to either let them die in their sleep in peace or make them realise whats up and waking up and dying there with her.
Its actually based on a book which is great. And i just love that this is playing with the "alien looks evil and fucked up so it must be evil...but wait its actually nice"
But who made the web trap there...I bet she/it did
@@morpheuslp4738 what book?
@@gustavogiggle8882 Its abook with collection of short stories. From what i have heard Zima blue is also in it, seems like Robots took quite some inspiration from there. Its called "Beyond the Aquila Rift by Alastair Reynolds".
Way more explanations as well, for example the book explains that his friends died because of the paint on their tanks which got scraped off over time and clogged the filters of the tank so they basicly died of suffocation (whioch is in the episode, you can see their tanks are painted, but its not further explained).
I know the original short story hints at perfectly benign alien compassion, but the film has a difference that points to something a little darker -- Tom isn't described as being physically emaciated upon waking to reality in the novela but is clearly so in the film-short...why? And why is the whole station, all ships, encrusted with webbing? My take from purely the film-short, is that these marooned arachnoid aliens are infact as highly intelligent and benign as they seem but are in survival mode. Tom and his crew's supplies of food and meds ran out weeks, maybe months ago, but the arachnoid's supplies ran out countless years, centuries or millennia ago, so they regretfully feed on whatever the rift sends them, but are compassionate enough to let the "food" fade into a pleasant dream.
What’s the original story called?
@@FreakyLynx Same as the short, Beyond The Aquila Rift.
I think the alien is also a highly evolved form of a water bear. It is not from planet earth but from space so the way it lives and eats is way different than that of humans. Plus it can probably live in environments that humans can’t.
@@junior17medval Interesting!
There's no suggestion, whatsoever - not even an indirect hint - that Greta is feeding on anyone. The fact that she, very definitely _isn't_ threatening in any way is the entire climax of the story?
If Greta was in any way predatory, the entire story would be undermined and it would be just another space monster yarn - and that's exactly what it _doesn't_ want to be.
So, no.
This is probably one of the best sci fi shorts I have ever watched. And despite how much I want to see more of this, I know that the fact that it is short makes it more beautiful. Gives your mind freedom to imagine. But god I want more!
Read some Alastair Reyinolds books, Alastair universe is vast, and theres many stories like this, BAR is just one story from one of his anthologies, theres another story from this antholgy that i love, it's called Fury.
At first I thought she was evil, due to her looking like a spider, but she seems to care more about him, while in a dream. The other fact that proves she is not evil is the way the humans look. They look like they have not eaten or drink anything in months to years. I guessing there is no food that can sustain them on that colony. Also the fact that she has stated that many humans have gone insane and killed themselves are tried to hurt her, which sums up humanity at that point.
Not actually humans, other species of aliens, she explain this in the book...
This episode borrows a great deal from an episode of "the Outer Limits" from the 90s.
