Jeep Grand Cherokee: No Start / No Crank
Vložit
- čas přidán 24. 07. 2024
- In this video I have a look at a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee that was towed in from another shop as a no start, no crank. It doesn't take long to determine that the ECM is at fault and will need a new one. -Enjoy!

For anyone wonder, the new ECM did resolve the issue with the fuel pump running continuous also 😉
What relationship to the constant fuel pump command to the no command on ground side switched SDR circuit ?
Internal PCM short possibly ?
Wooo Hooo!!!!
Open the ECM and put them super sweet soldering skills to work. 😳
@@Mr100bitcoin Was just about to say that!
Whoa
I was holding my breath on the poor fuel pump running and running, appreciate another find video (with closure)!
I would like to make note that the trust that you have enlisted in your community speaks volumes of your integrity
You rock dr.O you don’t realize the the amount of knowledge that comes out in your videos that isn’t really part of the main diagnosis thank you very much for taking the time to bring me along
Eric you're a damn good mechanic. Im not a mechanic but thanks to you ive been able to fix and diagnose all of the issues i have with mine and my wifes cars. Thank you for your awesome videos and the hours of entertainment ive gotten from them!
These are my favorite videos/case studies. So much can be learned by working though the diagrams with your coaching. You explained it well, thanks again.
Took the words right outta my mouth Wyatt. He made something very difficult for most and made it easy to follow along. Maybe the shop that sent this to him should watch it for training purposes.
@@Longtrailside you are correct.
It’s great that your the mechanics mechanic.great video as always
I'm amazed how smart you are. So nice to see honest mechanics out there instead of part swappers who say "oh yeah, that was bad too". When it clearly wasn't.
Just a master class. That is all I can say. If somebody has learned something from mr O, that guy is me. Thanks to mr O and his great way of teaching, I have become one of the most trusted technician around my area. I can't thank you enough. A Chilean born guy that is just kicking some butts.
Thank you 😊
I learn so much by watching your videos. Especially the diagnostic side of things. Thank you for teaching all us poor diy' ers Dr O.
I love these electrical diagnostic videos you make it look so easy. Keep up the good work
What else is there to say but great approach which lead to the fix!
Like I said before, the folks in that area are lucky to have your skills to call upon!
Thanks for the video.
I was an Auto/light Truck Technician for one product line for 35 years and never did master their product.
It just amazes me how you can work on many product lines; repair them plus repair them in an efficient manner; then run a business and make very instructional videos. You sir are a very inspirable person! Being in this line of business for the years I was in, very few people can do what you are doing.
You are a true genius at analyzing these problems. I envy your depth of knowledge.
So much i learn from your videos, great diag ,your willingness to disregard the previous shops mess and start from scratch is truly vital and you convey that. ......trusting your scan tool as far as you can throw it...LOLtoo funny!!!!
Always entertaining and always informative. Eric, you are the man!
Your not kidding about all the dirt roads up your way. My brother and I stopped in Tuesday to meet you from Pittsburgh and on our way home our stupid GPS took us down a dirt road that turned into 3-4 inches of mud. It took us into what looking like the middle of someone’s farm. 🤣🤣 I turned around since I didn’t want to get the car stuck and went another way. I should have brought my Jeep! Haha hope you enjoyed the Dunkin Donuts. Nice to finally meet you!
People watch your videos cause not only are you and mrs o the nicest people in the world! You have real talent Eric. I know guys that been wrenchin along time and don't have the understanding you do of these computer systems on cars! Love the videos and will put my money where my mouth is as soon as tax returns start flying!@ thank again!@
Thank you Mr Eric you make it look easy but I know you work hard to do all you do and still make videos for us to learn .
Great video. Very thorough. It helps me out alot. Thank you for explaining everything as simple as possible. I'm able to work on my own vehicles and figure things out but, by no means a veteran mechanic. Thank you
Just received my SMA shirt and love it!!! Thanks Eric for the time to make all these videos!
Just saw your video. The steps you use to diagnose are the key to finding and fixing the issue. THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge!!!
Awesome diagnosis eric, I love these videos. I like a good challenge, keeps you sharp and on your toes.
That scan tool may be our next shop purchase. Just had a Bosch rep in yesterday to show me around the tool. I like it!
GREAT VIDEO , LOVE TO SEE THE TOOLS IN ACTION AND TO LEARN THE DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES ALONG WITH THE THOUGHT PROCESS PLEASE KEEP THESE VIDEOS COMING ALL THE BEST AND RELY LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT ONE THANKS SO MUCH !
Mr. O'..... The Automotive Whisper! You never cease to amaze me, Sir. Thank you very much for all the GREAT Content.
Its always a pleasure watching your videos mr. O and family Keep em coming
Back in the 70's, I had a mobile auto repair business in Kansas. I got a lot of jobs where the shops were up to their *** , and they would parcel out to me work that would be worth my time, but not theirs. Was a great relationship for me and them. I knew my limits at the time, and wouldn't take on something where I might embarrass them or myself. Took on a few 'challenges' and learned a whole lot. Your area is fortunate to have you there. Great job on the diagnostic videos!
You are a genius, in the diagnostic world. Learned so much from your vids. Thank You!!
I have a 2003 tacoma 2.7 ,low mileage and very little rust.Although I may never need your wisdom ,I still enjoy watching and attempting to learn !
Amazing trouble shooting process. Wonder how you learned to be so great at this. You always have such a great attitude too. I get more frustrated! Thanks for making these vids.
You take on all the problem child cases from other shops. You the man!
Took a minute to understand how the tests showed the wires to/ from the ecm were good, but after a bit of thinking made perfect sense. Great video. Thanks bunches
Hi Eric been watching your channel from just before xmas finding it very intresting also that door bell of yours is sending my dog mad its thinking its ours ? keep your good work coming, thanks
I'm glad I'm not the only one with a crazy dog!!! My dog does the same thing, and his door bell sounds nothing like the one in my house.
I’ve seen that 3 times on that exact make model and engine. I found that it was bad grounds causing that issue with the ecm and the ecm wasn’t even bad I swapped the bad ecm into another one and it worked. Another great video keep em going im glad im not the only one working on junk.
I love these videos, a great way to learn!
Perfect way to start the day thanks for the video good sir.
Interesting diagnosis and repair. I noticed you do a lot of diagnostic work probably explains your multiple scanners. I worked at big company owned shop and all we had is one OTC scanner per store plus we had Mitchell though sometimes the diagnostic tech had his own scan tool. Keep the videos coming they're all interesting and informative.
Another great video from SMA ♡
good video Eric thanks for showing and explaining everything. Stay warm Artie ❤️️
mr o i work by myself all the time and no help to call upon so ive solved the push it in problem by mounting a winch in the floor of my shop under a workbench i use a harbor freight 110volt but a 3000lb atv winch and a battery will work and a wireless controller is awesome as well . this allows me to put any vehicle in the shop all by myself and i dont have to strain and push , and i dont have to ask for help lol just thought id pass along the idea thanks for the great videos its a pleasure to watch an honest man doing a great job
Thxs Eric, never boring always the 'BEST'....
been a subscriber for a while now, but you're definitely in my top 5 favorite youtubers.
This isn't mechanics, this is engineering. The skills demonstrated are the same as analogue component fault finding, pretty near. Am familiar with that from way back, now out of practice, but watching skills that meet with memories of using logic, knowledge and understanding to get there quicker. My boss complimented me once for finding a noisy variable capacitor, I then demonstrated that by wobbling each of approx 20 caps in a small area (the vertical amplifier of an oscilloscope) and found the same fault in 10 seconds. I had been working on it for 2.5 hours ! He shrugged and said "experience" as he walked away, happy. Mate you have a kind understanding of fault finding, you share ! EVERYONE within 300 miles of you who own a car/truck is very lucky to have you. An example to the rest of the industry. HARD WORK ! The true way to experience :)
Your the best CZcams mechanic, great result with a great actitud im learning from u
Wow. Eric O. You are a Genius in diagnosis cars. I understood very little the whole process.
Another great diagnostic video. Thank you. Thumbs Up
I encountered the same problem on a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2 days ago. i suspected the ASD then after a few tests I decided on the ECM. The car was in a parking lot w/ 100*F outside. I made the decision to call a tow truck and take it to a dealership. Half a day later the dealership found the ECM to be bad they are not as good at troubleshooting as you. Love your videos you are brilliant!
Thanks for the closure Eric. And the entire video
Thanks so much for not letting us hanging....awesome as always...!!!!😀😀
Too many electronics. I remember when the only electronics you had in a vehicle was the voltage regulator built into an alternator if you didn't order the optional radio.
I miss the old days.
Enjoy the videos.
One day them arabs over there across the big ponds are gonna top 911 with a EMP. Then we wont have to worry about ECM an lots of other Electronics. Back to horse an buggy days. Lol lol lol
Why not just go to the vibrating coil voltage regulators mounted separately?
@@jkbrown5496 I remember that on my dad's old Ford 1954 f100. It had a 239 CID v8. He took 292 out of a 1960s Ford station wagon with a 4bbl card an put in that truck . When he went to sell it in 1984 he put the 239 back in it.
@@thomaswilson8634 Not true. A lab did a big test in 2004 where they exposed a bunch of different makers' cars to an EMP. The result? 100% of the cars cranked, started, and drove after being hit with a full-strength EMP. Most didn't even throw an ECM code.
@@ischmidt Well I was in the air force an that's what we were trained to anticipate. Was that lab ran by a bunch of monkeys. Lol. Explain why billions have been spent on subs an even air force one to make it emp proof. I dont believe that lab not one bit. Sorry.
Great Video , always walk away with something new !!!
Great diagnostic skill, excellent work!
Thanks for the troubleshooting technique. Have chased my tail only to find it was something simple as a blown fuse that was overlooked the first time.
Wow a PHAD Bonus segment! You're learning!!
Great diagnosis and fix step by step video.. Thanks for taking the time...
Nice video…. I ran into a similar issue with the kids 97 grand Cherokee ended up replacing the PCM ...runs good once again.
Dude, I just watched the thumbnail preview of this video and the close captioning said "Hello, and welcome to cell phone". I don't know why I thought that was hilarious! Must be the sore throat coming through.
Oh, thanks for another great video, by the way! 😁
Love the relay tester you used
Excellent Video and Info as always Mr. O... SMA is the best out there
You do good work! very good video, I actually learned something.
Great diagnostics Eric O.
JEEP CHRYSLER ARE KRAP
GET SUBIE ,OR HONDA
Everything understood even with the all the interruptions, came through loud and clear. Can't hardly wait for the follow up vijeo
Always seems other shops can never solve the problem so they bring it to SMA.Eric always fines the problem and fixes it..What it comes down to is never take it to another shop or dealer, always take it to SMA they will get the job done right the first time..
Man you're such a good mechanic and I'm getting ready to retire and I love cars and I would love to learn so much from you I found it in Upstate New York at me just to hang around go get parts sweep the shop just to learn
Eric O' wow , you set the standard when honesty and ability is so rare. did not need the other shops fuel pump replacement , oh goodness, throwing parts at the wrong problem ... There should be laws to protect customers.I wonder what the customer had to say to the other shop ? Maybe that should be off camera ? ouch $$$ It happened to me . cutting off while driving , not the fuel pump , but the distributor. Skills and honesty matter. thanks , great fix it video :)
Good morning Mr. Eric O. Every time you say the vehicle you work on comes from another shop makes me laugh. The owners should just come to you in the first place. Lol. Have a great day and stay warm. Rob from Oklahoma!
My thoughts exactly. Eric O is definitely THE man! I've not heard or known of a vehicle he,Ivan,Keith,ETCG or scanner danner(Paul Danner) cannot fix. IMO
these are the best in the USA or even the world period! These guys could fix the space shuttle IMO. Again great video Eric O,have a great day.
Unfortunately I am that other shop lol not literally the one in this video but I’m a cheap shop I have a place in life example I have a actrom scanner and no heat in my shop I get nuts and bolts work mainly yes I have diagnosed computers etc but it’s mainly guess work...when I can’t fix it it goes to the big boys like south main auto
The owner wouldn't know this was going to be complex issue. Possibly the fuel pump had burned out running all the time after the ECM failed and needed replacement. Avoca can't support a full time diagnostic tech, but neither does it need a couple dozen. But it apparently does keep a fair number of shops in business. So it looks like Eric and the other shops have a nice informal network set up going.
@@TheMechanicj you are not a bad shop. Not by any means. You are getting better with each one you put back on the road. You also are there to save those like me that thought i could fix it. Then just screwed it up even more. None of the commenters on here should make you feel under used. Since you are in business and staying that way you are doing what you do good. Eric didn't just bounce out of his mother with a scanner in one hand and a wrench in the other. Everything comes with time experience and study. So don't feel bad. Don't loose hope. Never stop learning. Those customers that you give to another shop. They will respect your honesty. They will come back to you for that. Its the shop that says they fixed it and it breaks as the customer drives away. Those are the wrong guys. Eric says it as well. If i can do it so can you. Don't forget that.
In a small town, you keep your friends by respecting their customers and helping them out when you can, and by not being greedy. Seems like that arrangement is working pretty well in the Avoca area.
He’s vídeos are very helpful
Thanks a lot 👍👍👍
Good video sir and great work
Thanks for the excellent video.
Great find! Does that scantool come with that info/wiring diagram program and is it any good on Euros?
Ahhhhh, I jumped in to quick. Lucky the wrecking yard PCM worked! Great Job!
Sir thanks 👍 your good video your the most favorite of Machanics like me I learned lot from you and change my living
LOL "There's that damn compressor again!" I love that compressor! It means I'm watching a SMA Video!!!! :D
I love how youtube does the cc before you click on a video. Its diffrent every time. Instead of south main auto sometimes its "self made auto" or "cell phone auto" its always a surprise!
You are really good at what you do.
I had that same issue as far as no crank no start no code on a 05 Canyon I chased it down to a ingition switch replaced it then it was crank no start found that the guy the customer bought it from cut the blue and white security wire, fixed the wire and boom! Unreal. Mitchell wire diag saved me. Great find on the ECM. Crazy how much these parts go bad nothing lasts anymore.
Whewww--- I was worried about your fav. hat. Glad its back
Another great video and another great diagnosis
Good stuff as always!
Could you show me more of the programming or relearns of PCMs and modules in the future. Maybe what modules require a pass-thru device etc. thanks
I am truly impressed by your knowledge. Its way past my pay grade lol,, ill be watching your train of thought and find i don’t have enough bread crumbs to find my way home lol.. of course I’m not a mechanic , impressive none the less ..
Never cease to amaze me Eric. Why can't I have someone within a 50 mile radios that can fix my no crank cts.? G.M. dealer couldn't, and gave up. Been starting it by jumping the starter relay.
gen 1
Great job again like always A+
I don't know what it is but I have watched a lot of CZcams because that's what I like doing I like your channel because I just love it but yours the only one that blacks out and I have to go back and restart it again I don't know what that's all about but I'm just letting you know I don't know if anybody else is having a problem or not but keep up the good work God Bless America jeeps and BBQ
Hey Eric, great video, keep up with the good work! I think the scanner have a bug in the display list when you try to customize the view on bi-directional controls. Can you hit the sort a-z button on the cuztomize screen? It Is bad, but I think this will be a workaround and will allow you to select at least 19 different items (no 02 related).
I like that scanner, and is fast too,i know you moving fast and the scanner is perfect for you
With love thank you for your video and service
Excellent Video Eric O. Always a pleasure to watch and learn. I'm a young mechanic learning my way and id would be keen to see if youd sell me one of your old scan tools that you use in your videos. Happy to pay for it and ship. Thanks, wait to hear.
Dear Eric, I enjoy all of your videos but the 'nuts and bolts' ones are my favorite. However I do appreciate and am impressed by your skills with all the diag equipment and wiring diagrams. Your explanations as you work are mostly comprehensible even for someone like me who will never have that equipment or those skills to apply to a DIY job. God Bless and when you are ready to move South (North Carolina is a beautiful State) please let me know. You would love working on my 6 yr old, very clean and rust/salt free Honda Accord Ex. And I would love having you work on it. Jim
once again showing that testing is key! I really thought it was a relay and I was WRONG. Great video. (Full disclosure, I no longer bend a wrench to make a living so any input I had would be a guess! )
I really thought it was A relay also I would be too afraid to Replace the ECM but then I’m not Eric O
Hi Mr. O. I think you should change your slogan to: If you can ´t do it, I can di it. Another great work from a great person.
I like your style Eric, hopefully ECM will cure it, looks like you have plenty of work anyway..Fred in England.
ever time your door bell rings i keep thinking it is some one at my door as i have the same chime :-)
Masterful diagnosis on jeep, quite a bit of scan tool use, not for everyone to trouble shoot and fix without a $2000.00 scan tool
Eric O., in the know! Another good video show!
Great job, per usual!
ow man you are amazing...ive been learning so much from your vids thanks so much and keep up the great work...im a canadian up here in saskatchewan and trying to learn about my daughters 2002 mitsubishi that went to nutral on a hyway trip then she turned off the car and tried to re-start but cranked and no start??....seems to me that this vid tells me it may be the same??...of course im going to wait till it warms up as its -40 here now...brrrrr...lol...anyway, thanks again...ill keep watching as you and your family are a taste of heaven to watch...so, see you again real soon...love peanuts...lol...take care buddy.
Usually the 02 sensors shorting out will either blow the ASD fuse or mess with the ecu. Make sure you check and see if there is a short in the 02 sensors. Iv been through this numerous times. I replaced the ecu in these vehicles just to have I happen again 1 month later because of the o2 sensor wires rubbing on metal or rubbing the drive shaft.
Another great diagnosis.
Nice quick diagnostics, on to part 2.
