Is Pokken Tournament Still Worth Playing?

- I don't know about you, but as of time of recording, I'm HANKERING for a new Pokken.
Especially since they're not supporting competitive Pokken anymore... it would be nice for a sequel.
Initially released on Wii U and in select arcades in 2015, the first Pokken has been a really fun game for me to return to.
Especially DX on Switch with the DLC Pokemon added. There's so much still to do. Those Daily Challenges still entertain me, and give me time to re-remember controls.
...Before inevitable losing online.
Cause by the way, Pokken aint you're average 3D fighting game.
It's not simply Tekken with Pokemon...
it's kind of a 2D fighting game mixed in with a harder-hitting, but slower Tekken.
In the phase shifting, characters can have differing moves, and different ways to approach opponents.
It looks initially complicated, but you quickly get the hang of it, it's very user friendly.
The library of Pokemon to choose from, on it's own, is fantastic.
You have your staple Pokemon like Charizard, Pikachu, MewTwo, Suicune, Gengar...
Then you have a gradient scale of newer Pokemon that make for great characters as well.
Chandelure, Garchomp, Braixen, and more.
With the Switch version comes Decidueye, which was my personal favourite Sun-Moon starter, and he plays great in this game.
There's two DLC fighters, Blastoise, and Aegislash. I love the mixing in of older generations of Pokemon with newer generations. It really rounds out the roster.
I have my favourites too, like Scizor, Croagunk, Pikachu Libre, Blazekin, and Sceptile.
The roster is really great, with each character having fun mechanics to play with, and some greater gambit characters like Shadow Mewtwo to experiment with.
Stringing together combos becomes very fun when you get to know a pokemon, and seeing what moves can chain into each other before the fighter goes into a recovering animation becomes more intriguing. - Hry
You ever think watching the gameplay for this game is way closer to how NPCs experience Pokémon battles, rather than watching gameplay from the main games. I doubt everybody sees battles in the turn based Robert Downy Jr. Sherlock Holmes view. Just the psycho playable characters.
This is one of the best takes on Pokken I have ever seen. Though interestingly the only reason the battles are like this is because of the lore of the Ferrum region and the synergy guage. Apparently normal Pokemon battles are turned based. Interesting.
I'd say it's more like the anime, but yeah, this is a cool take on it
pokemon horizons (the new anime) is actually showing fighting very similar to this.
@@anotherblowncartridgeturn based could work if it was quick like naruto style. 'I cast fireball!' "well I dodge and uppercut youuuu"
This game ia something that is super special. I really hope people start talking about it again so we can get a new one.
I couldn't agree more! Let's hope for Pokken 2 on whatever console comes after the Switch!
This game has its own community. The people you used to see in the tournaments, thankswalot rokso tarutaro, we're all there still playing the game
This is cool! I might do a video eventually on the competitive scene and metagame as things progress past the games time in the competition limelight.
I was just playing with few people today when I got off work it was pretty cool
Does the community has a discord server?
@@feeldesu182yes!
I just bought this game the other day after getting in a weird mood to play a fighter, which other than smash bros I never really was into. I bought the hori controller for it as well to get the most authentic experience I could with it and I gotta say it's a really amazing game. Bit of a learning curve but it's super fun and I look forward to improving my skills. Wish I would have bought it sooner.
Gosh, this game is great, it's 3D-2D gameplay wasn't perfect but it's uniqueness was just so much fun to play! As someone who's still enjoys the newest main games even with their clear flaws, a new Pokken or at least another game with this art style would be amazing!
I couldn't agree more. Phase shifting ain't the biggest thing since sliced bread, but at least it makes the game unique and its own beast. We definitely need a new Pokken with literally ALL the pokemon I listed at the end.
@@anotherblowncartridge Absolutely! I had a Golduck as a child and let me tell ya, we need that Golduck!
@@downutshark Golduck the GOAT
@@anotherblowncartridgeso they wont make new pokemon on this game or what ?
Skeptile goes crazy
One of the most visually pleasing fighting games and quite smooth too. You feel great when pulling of combo and etc.

I never really got into the game, but I came back to the Wii U version one day and realised that it was better than I originally remembered. I really hope a sequel comes out.
Yeah heres hoping Pokken 2 is a launch game for Nintendos next console
I loved that game, I really hope it gets a sequel.
Yeah, I think a bigger, better sequel for whatever follows up the Switch would be a must-buy for me! Especially after Bandai-Namco is done Tekken 8; it would be awesome!
I remember hearing that there was evidence of at least talk of a sequel, but this was a while ago and I don't really have a source on it, but it does still give some hope
@@zacharymarino8926 We can always hope!
I still haven't bought first game on switch. But I remember playing at switch stand when it first came out. Instantly made me want switch
If there's a sequel someday, I just hope the character roster is bigger, I don't mean like addjng every single Pokemon, but at least I hope it has twice the number of characters this one had because honestly I was kind of disappointed with how little characters this game had to choose from
Couldn't agree more
23 different playable characters is a pretty good size for a fighting game that is essentially the Updated Re-release of a first in its subseries game tbf. They definitely could have added more DLC characters, but it's far from being a small roster by Fighting Game standards
After getting this for the switch with before in my life playing the demos of both versions of the game and playing a little bit on wii u for a day or two it's my favorite fighting game with Kill La Kill IF the combat is so much fun with the characters being different and unique from each other with me personally really enjoying the story with shadow mewtwo I love this game so much awesome and good video my friend keep it up:)
i recently got into this game cause i saw gameplay and was immediately intrigued. i was all about joining the community and getting into the game, but i saw the game was still $60 and in this economy, paying that for a game that’s over 6 years old is like giving away your life’s savings. so i just play the demo and enjoy it 😂
Yeah that's very fair, I can't blame you for not wanting to blow 60 bucks in this neodepression. Enjoy the demo!
Try buying it on GameStop or eBay they got it for cheap, rhat how I copped my game
eBay it’s $30 used
i ended up getting the game and became a suicune darkrai main 😂
Man I recall when it was only available on Arcades in Japan. I watched probably the first ever promotional tournament where Sasahune won it using Gengar. There were tons of great japanese players during those times like Buntan, Potetin, Tonosama, Tarutaro, Elm, Canimiso, Onshiifumi, Tanoshimi, Azazel (scariest Machamp player IMO next to Onshiifumi), etc.
I feel they should add greninja he would fit perfectly in
Greninja would be a fantastic choice!
True, the ash greninja thing is literally what Synergy burst is
Throughout its live span, I've always wanted Hawlucha in the game
Great pick! How is Hawlucha not in the game??! Huge missed opportunity.
Hawlucha was awesome in the XY & Z anime
I want Ledian in this game. The only bug is scizor, I want a bug buddy team in this game
I literally just brought this game last month & i gotta say this is pretty good I love playing with other players
VERY and I mean VERY UNDERRATED game right here.
It's really unfortunate that this game didn't take off more. Hopefully its sequel is more successful and well regarded.
@@anotherblowncartridge I know right. I think it was the marketing in my opinion, it didn't seem like a lot of people even knew this existed and whenever I mention it to someone new they usually seem pretty enthused about the idea. Problem is it's been too long.
@@azure8696 Agreed. Most games that launched on Wii U had a hard time
This is what pokemon battles should have always been like n about.
this was one of my favourite wii u games
And it only got better on Switch! The Wii U version is still awesome on its own
@@anotherblowncartridge I never got around to buying it, maybe i will one day
Great video! Wonder if I can still locate this for Wii U emulation 🤔🤔😀
Thank you! And I'm sure you can still find it if you know where to look
I like how you keep naming Pokémon, but it fades out into the outro 😂💀
Oh goodness, I love this game. I'll boot it up and play offline matches in the Red-Iron Leagues (depending on whether I'm playing a current main or picking up a new one.) for HOURS straight.
I do really love the gameplay system. Really hoping a sequel comes out for whatever comes after the Switch
I remember trying the demo for this on Wii U wayyyyy back in the day, I can't believe it's still sort of around lol. I love the idea of it but something in the execution and overall style of it just didn't click with me! I think I would actually prefer Tekken with Pokemon characters, personally 😅 I hope they continue to polish it into something even better because it has so much potential to be an iconic spinoff tbh
Couldn't agree more. I hope Pokken continues on with new releases.
I love that this game is a bit more on the casual side.
If I want to attack I use a direction and a button (or just the button).
If I want an extra spicy attack I hold down a button.
The only things (as far as I know) that need multiple buttons are universal options.
As a Garchomp main I have an attack when I hold down a button and release it along with a running stance attack.
I haven't played street fighters but I've seen attacks with motion input that just look like a Z or combinations like ⬅⬇➡A
And that's just not for me
With Pokken I'm happy to say that I can use all of my moves with and I've learned a few combos
If we ever get a sequel I hope that the game will keep this casual component and that my main will be featured (and free online play but that's wishful thinking).
I miss the days of free online play...
To be honest with you. I just got back on this game I have the physical copy. It’s still fun. I refreshed by mains so Empoleon,Aegislash, Blastoise and Decidueye are my four stronger mains. Then then I have three weaker ones I will play on 3v3 which is Lucario, Gardevoir and Sceptile
We need a sequel
I used to play this with my friend when I was over. He played Pikachu and I played Suicune. If I remember right, I kept on winning so much that he banned me from playing them!
(I think I was mostly just spamming the ice beam)
Shit 2018 Christmas was the best year ever. Physical copy of this game for Christmas for my Nintendo Switch and I played this game on the Wii U back then and played it a little in Walmart. Bring back W’s for this game
Looking to finally get this with the switch vouchers and another game to make it worth it
This is what I thought pokemon stadium would be like before I got it home and played it.
If only pokken was like an open world pokemon game with the same story of any pokemòn game.
Alright, I'm confused. Half the time I see people whining about games being open world, and the other half I see people wishing (insert franchise) had an open world game.
I've always thought that this type of battling is much better than gen games since it's much cooler and pretty much more anime related
It definitely feels more like the anime
I like it when the pokemon fight and the voices stop
dispel the voices and play Pokken
Sceptile was my main. I wish I got this on Switch but there's no support.
My favorite fighting game i pray to arceus that there will be a sequel
Praise be to Lord Arceus
Yes absolutely it is I love this game however I can never actually connect to a ranked match I can find but can’t join it fully sucks on that note tbh
It would be awesome if online worked 😭
Darkrai my beloved- (i am a darkrai main lol)
Omg I'm with you 😅😮😮🎉 ... Dont forget star u
Starmie would make an excellent character pick!
Is a really good game too me
I would say yes, but when you hop online, otherwise, not really
Ok hold on what are you cooking with Maushold in Pokkén?
Maushold would be an amazing character, maybe like Rosalina and Luma or Ice Climbers from Smash Bros. Just an idea.
This game is amazing!!!
Not skeptile LMAOO
I really wish a part two or dlc came out or some Mods came out
Yeah even more DLC characters would be great! Would love to see more Pokemon join the fray if the wont just do a straight up sequel for whatever console comes after the Switch
They need florges on the roster! More fem rep + fairy magical attacks and her vines could make for a cool kit
Florges FOR SURE. Imagine some dope Moonblast-themed synergy burst moves?
I rage quit this game after loosing to shadow mewtwo but, it was still so fun and iconic. 😂❤❤
Shadow Mewtwo is a difficult boss fight, for sure!
YES IT IS!
Couldn't agree more
Hello. Im an offline player, I love Pokemon and Tekken for a long time. I tried demo, watched matches and gameplay is fun, Im thinking of buying it. I know its so late but do you think this game is still worth for casual player like me?
On sale I would definitely say it's still worth it. Just keep up with Daily Challenges and you'll be okay offline once you beat the single player.
@@anotherblowncartridge oh thank you for your inputs! Im curious, is the singe player like an arcade mode with 7-8 stages? I been playing Tekken arcade mode over and over which I am having fun with it, Im hoping this game has it too
Is this similar to Pokémon Stadium?
Not really. This is more of 3D fighting game, whereas Stadium is basically a traditional format Pokemon turn-based battle simulator
Does the online mode still work
Indeed it does!
What if in an alternate timeline, every main Pokemon game had Pokken's battle gameplay and graphics(for the 3D games).
I love both Pokken combat as well as classic Pokemon turned based combat so I'm conflicted. But I would like more Pokken.
@@anotherblowncartridge Turn-Based is really slow-paced and bored me at times. I'd rather to finish my opponents instantly to move on to the story(as if I'm watching a movie).
Watching this as I decide if i should unwrap my game. 😂
I definitely think if the gameplay excites you, you should give it a try. But if you want to preserve its packaged condition for resale value or collectors value, I cant blame you.
@Another Blown Cartridge my wrapped games were always games I intended to play but got caught playing something else and I kept buying games and the backlog adds up lol.
Is it worth buying rn I really want it can you still fight players online ??
Yes, you can still find matches online, it just might take a little while to find an opponent. I don't have too much luck finding people when I play, but I'm sure it's still got players.
I didn’t know this existed until browsing the Nintendo store
Nintendo definitely didn't advertise well enough
I’m made I have never heard of this game until today..
Well, now you can discover that there's a lot or like about it
What about Gallade?
Gallade would be awesome! Same with Kabutops. Bladed arms make for a great 3D fighting game character
So in some way it is worth the 60$ that it still costs to this day?
Id wait for a sale
We need at least 1 starter for each gen on sequel...
What I'm asking is: is it worth £55? And will the switch's ass online picking up matches without 900ping
Yeah, on top of having to PAY for that crappy online... its definitely a hard ask as a consumer in this economy.
Pokemon Presents is tomorrow! My false hope is telling me it’s time for Pokken Tournament 2 to be announced. Please.
Fingers crossed! I doubt we'll see it until a Switch successor is fully revealed, but who knows? Could come out in arcades first.
Its an awesome game!
It is awesome! Hopeful for a sequel!
This is what stadium should been😊
I still love the original Stadium, but it would be awesome to have had Pokken games going back to the N64 days and on-wards. Imagine a Gamecube and/or Wii Pokken?
Would definitely buy if it wasn't still $80 on the switch store.
Yeah still way too pricey, especially with extra DLC to buy too.
how to buy this on pc i cant find links
As far as I know, it's only available on Switch. Unless you can find an emulator and tom of the game somewhere, but obviously, legally, I could never advocate for something like that.
I just buy pokken and its MEGA!
Regret getting rid of my physical copy of this game it was quality
Pokken honestly needs to come back with more depth than just doing side quests and queuing up for online matches. Pokken would actually kill off the staple mainline games if they added an actual overworld and mainline story elements to the game.
This would be amazing! A true story mode with an overworld! I doubt we'd get that in a sequel, but we can dream!
This is like fucking Tekken to me. Which makes sense because it’s from the same company. But still Tekken has no system called duel or field phase. Oh it’s also demo on the eShop if you can get into the eShop. Got this game back in 2018 and trust me I really do enjoy this game and Fighters Z which I’m taking a break from right now. Phantom Breaker is cool decent, Samurai Shodown is great so and so forth.
Spidops? 😭
Hell yeah bro
Best Pokemon game on the Switch.
Fr
It's unfortunate that I couldn't agree more. Really wish that the mainline games were better, but oh well.
FUN FACTS: The Wii U version outsold Street Fighter V
Capcom really needs to think about that. At least SF6 is doing better.
I want Greninja in the sequel.
Greninja is super needed for a sequel!
@@anotherblowncartridge Yeah. I seriously do not know how he missed pokken 1.
@@Rexred09 Braixen but no Greninja??? Crazy.
Chandelier is the best
Great long range attacks!
Braixen My Main
Is swampert on there lol
Swampert should definitely be in the next Pokken
No we need buzzwole ok it’s a buff Pokémon and the best in my opinion
Agreed. The best ulteabeast easily
The short answer is yes and it needs a sequel
I feel like that sequel will be a launch title for the next Nintendo console.
Imagine a gen 1 only main stream pokemon game open world like legends but battling is like this Smfh beautiful
For me It's the best Pokemon game ever
Big claim! I'd definitely agree and say it's one of the best!
The game NEEDED a huge competitive scene to survive. Being an arena 3d fighting game does not scream "fun to watch" for new viewers. It's a game that you pick and play for a few hours or so, then slowly or immediately drop--like virtually every anime game made by Bandia Namco.
Much like many online games for Switch aside from MarioKart 8 and Smash Ultimate
We need greninja
Agreed!
Can you give downlod link
Please 😢
Apologies, but I didn't download my copy of the game. I played a purchased hard copy of the game.
''they could have made a streetfighter clone but instead''. they made a tekken clone
It was made by Bandai Namco, so... makes sense. Though I really don't think its very much like Tekken in terms of gameplay.
Too bad it won't be on PC or any console that matters.
You don't think the Switch, one of the most popular and best selling video game consoles "matters"?
I mean... You can always emulate.

A thank you
So… is it worth it? There isn’t a real conclusion for this.
If you want online that's active, no. If you want a good time and a fun local multiplayer Pokemon fighting game, yes.

It is rip-off of Super Smash Brothers game?
This game is fucking suck, iron leauge is impossible with charizard
Imagine pokken style gen 10 pokemon lol that would be fire right ? Ehem ehem ehem palworld 🤣🫡🤔💭
