Is Mario Tennis Aces Still Worth Playing?

  • Mario Tennis Aces has been on Switch since 2018 and joined a collection of Switch Mario sports games that have mostly been collectively described as “mid” from the community as of late.
    But is Mario Tennis Aces as mediocre as described, or does it present some real value to people who still wish to play and develop it's meta-game and online scene?
    Is the game still a service ace, or is there no love to be found?
    --
    So after the Mario Tennis games on 3DS and the absolutely dog water excuse of a game called Mario Tennis Ultra Smash on Wii U, Nintendo and developer Camelot were in need of a series rejuvenation.
    While they wouldn't attempt to create another tennis RPG like before on handhelds; for their Switch Tennis outing, they tried to strike a balance between offering a enough of a single player campaign while still providing a more classic console styled Mario Tennis.
    All underpinned with a few new gameplay mechanics to keep things interesting.
    Enter Mario Tennis Aces from 2018.
    Clearly looking a little similar to Mario Tennis Ultra Smash in terms of graphics, but improved in many ways, Aces intended to set the series forward again, with a better system for active competition online, and with a consistent flow of free updates to keep players coming back.

    Chain Chomp should be in every Mario sports game but be way worse than the other characters. I want him to be the face of ' I'm so much better than my friends that I can beat them with a crap character.'

    I never had the opportunity to play this game, I wish they made available this game again for NSO Game Trials or it get released as a Nintendo Selects brand for cheaper. I don't wanna buy a game that has so little content for full price.

    For me, Switch Mario sports games are " just fun arcade sports games". With the good and the bad things those words imply.

      That's a pretty fair characterization. Though, I find them including a decent enough single player mode tends to separate them a little bit from the standard arcade sports game experience... But not by much

    I still remember the hardest part of the story for me was that rally challenge with Kamek. Literally harder than the final boss because of that stupid pole messing everything up lol. But anyway I still come back to this game sometimes but the online is very dead unfortunately at least the last few times I tried to play it.

    I agree with most of the video except the comment at the end that there is not enough competitive depth. This game is incredibly well thought out. s lacking as there is in game modes and overall content, it is hard carried by the excellent gameplay. It might not be apparent at a glance but there is a reason people still play it.
    Ranked is starting to get pretty dead but like Golf Super Rush, M&S 2020 and dare I say Smash Ultimate, the meat and potatoes is in private lobbies. Sure the Mario sports games aren't as populated as Smash but you get the idea.

    • @anotherblowncartridge
      @anotherblowncartridge  Před měsícem +1

      Yeah, I suppose you're right. It's just hard to see the competitive depth outside of very small in-person tournaments and a dying online space. But I agree, the gameplay mechanics are very competitively sound and overall highly well-made.
