  • In 1993, No. 1 Florida State played No. 2 Notre Dame at Notre Dame Stadium. It was billed as the Game of the Century and most predicted this would be an elimination game for the National Championship. Few were giving the Irish a chance against the highly touted Seminoles who were lead by eventual Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward. With 3 seconds left, down a touchdown, the Seminoles were 14 yards away from possibly tying or winning the game. Ward scrambled out of the pocket and had his pass was broken up by Irish defensive back Shawn Wooden. The fans stormed the field after the Irish's 31-24 over the Seminoles.
    The full game is available for a limited time only exclusively on The Fighting Irish CZcams channel. For more games check out the full "The Vault: ND on NBC" playlist.

      Yeah and in thr 80s guess what all three were.....Independents. not one of them were affiliated with a conference. The only one who was big enough to sustain it is the one everyone wants to try and say needs to join a conference. ND. Problem is that they're still big enough to stlustain it, and if they win a title then joining a conference is no longer even debatable.

      absolutely. there was far more parity. It wasn't like now where Michigan would beat Rutgers 55-3 and then lose to Ohio State 47-14. There's too much of a gap between the top 5, the rest of the top 25 and certainly everyone else.

      @brandonmorris92 Před 3 lety +3

      @@allengreene9954 Well, I would respectively agree and disagree with that. True College football now doesn't have the excitement it had back in the 2000s and the Kick Six was the last great moment. Now, everyone's focused on Alabama and Clemson (no disrespect to either one of those teams). The BCS was an absolute travesty and it was especially so in 2000, 2001, 2004, 2006, and 2012, when teams like Miami, Colorado, Auburn, Michigan, and Oklahoma State respectively, all got screwed from playing in the championship. Now we do have the four team playoff and it's made College football exciting again, but the bias against teams like UCF, who clearly deserved to be in the playoff, is what irritates me. They have all the focus on the so-called "power five" Conferences and leave out the more deserving teams like, say, an undefeated Coastal Carolina team being left out because they're from the "group of five". This is why the playoff needs to expand to at least six teams (five conference champions and one undefeated team from any of the other Conferences).

I was just old enough to reasonably remember the Miami and WVU games in 1988/89 but in truth the FSU game in 1993 is still to this day the biggest ND game of my lifetime that has full context. The BC loss the following week still breaks my heart to this day. 27 years later and I'm not sure if the program has really overcome that missed opportunity. I got home just in time to see the final 5 minutes of the loss after attending college football's most played rivalry that day, Lehigh vs Lafayette. At least Lehigh won....

Bobby Bowden was THE COACH! who went up against Lou Holtz another great coach. I have much respect for the Bowden Family; they're humble and gracious to others and Coach Bowden lives his faith and tried to instill values into his players. We can't forget Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward, Jr. was THE QB! who had a great performance in this game showing why he deserved the 1993 Heisman Trophy. I didn't know him but I knew his dad, Charlie, Sr. (who was my history teacher in High School), and also I graduated High School with Charlie, Jr.'s younger brother & sister. 31-17. FSU 4th late. ND has a easy INT. Drops it and then gives up a TD. That play cost ND a national title. Would have been a decisive win. FSU saved themselves. Drop 1 spot and was gifted a title. ND dominated this game.

      FSU actually out gained Notre Dame in total yardage but made some uncharacteristic mistakes especially in the 2nd quarter. Bobby Bowden had too aggressive of a game plan that day. I wanted the rematch in the Orange Bowl. I will give Notre Dame credit for playing an outstanding game, but if that game is played in Tallahassee or a neutral site it's a different story. I compare it to when FSU upset UF in Tallahassee (1996) and got destroyed in the rematch. The home field advantage was huge that day. It usually is in college football.

    I remember I was a teenager when we watched this at my parents house. My dad had some people over. We were all FSU fans.
    After Notre Dame didn't score on their first drive and FSU did, we all felt like FSU was going to beat the crap out of Notre Dame the way FSU beat all other teams so far. We felt confident we were going to blow them out. Then Notre Dame scores and I clearly remember a fellow FSU fan saying "Good. I don't want to blow them out. I want this to be a good game."
    Then Notre Dame scores again... and again..... and we were down by a couple touchdowns. At halftime, we all were in shock. We couldn't believe this was even possible. How could FSU be LOSING?! In the second half, we were had hope FSU could come back. I remember my dad saying "It takes a true champion to come from behind like this and win." Right down to the last play, we believed it was possible. At the end, we were all upset. The great titans have been brought down. This undefeatable powerhouse of a team finally lost.
    Then Notre Dame lost to Boston College and FSU went on to win the national championship. Would have liked a rematch with Notre Dame for the title, because I think, if they played again, FSU could have beaten them. If you take out the second quarter of this game and put together quarters 1, 3, and 4, FSU wins this easily. FSU panicked too early and lost their confidence. In a neutral site, in a rematch, I truly believe FSU could have beaten them.
    My $0.02

    Watching the Bobbie Bowden interview before the start of the game, when he was asked about the nat'l championship and Bobbie said something about needing it to fill out his portfolio he mentioned something about winning it that year and all i could think was "no you didn't". Of the pre-playoff format when the #1 and #2 teams at the end of the year rarely played each other in a bowl game due to conference requirements to play in their respective bowl games like the Rose Bowl which was the PAC 10 vs. the Big Ten every year for many decades. Therefore there wasn't a rematch even though they were tied in record with both finishing the season 11-1 and almost the entire country wanting a rematch. Normally I would think that the next tiebreaker you go to, if possible, is head to head. That didn't happen however because most sportswriters hated the Fighting Irish for having beat up most colleges for a hundred years or so. So the Sportswriters "GAVE" the Nat'l Championship to the Seminoles even though head to head Notre Dame thoroughly whooped Fla St. Only a prevent (dime) defense allowing 2 TD's at the end of the game for the 'Noles kept the score respectable in the 4th QTR. The coaches voted the way most experts thought would happen and Notre Dame was the UPI Nat'l Championship Winner even though the AP was more prestigious. How can sportswriters voting be considered more respectable than coaches who the majority of which know a ton more about football. Those that have thick glasses and 2 left feet become sportswriters and those that know the game better than anyone else coach. I don't read anything that the sportswriters write in their stupid newspapers anymore. Rather, their articles on the Internet. They all lie and manipulate you into believing them. The system still isn't perfect but football fans, players and their families deserved a rematch at the very least or Notre Dame winning the AP poll and UPI. It's worth noting that the dime defense made the score look closer than it really was it was employed very effectively against an extremely tough Texas A&M team in the Cotton Bowl which was one of the 5 biggest bowl games depending who played in it from season to season. This year it was a #2 vs. #4 ranked teams I believe. My good memory doesn't work as well as it used to.
