Yes, I remember this game too. We, the Irish, beat Florida State in a tough-fought game. Only to lose the following week and kill our Championship hopes.
I was there with 3 of my HS buddies. The first ever on campus ESPN College GameDay show. We got 4 tix to the game about 2 hours before kickoff. Yes, we were getting anxious. The only game I can say was better and more intense than this Game of the Century #1 vs #2 match-up that I attended in person was the 1988 Catholics vs Convicts game I was also at, #1 Miami at #4 ND. That game was just bonkers and deafening from start to finish. But this was a similar atmosphere and darn close. We ran on the field afterwards, just a crazy scene. The euphoria of a victory like that by your alma mater is hard to put into words. NO ONE IN THE MEDIA gave the Irish a chance even though ND was also 9-0 and #2 and at home. The media was calling the Criminoles "maybe the greatest team ever assembled". They wanted "good ol boy" Bobby to win his 1st NC so bad. Which is why the media jerryrigged the rankings pitifully for the Bowl Alliance NC game, ranking 1 loss FSU ahead of 1 loss ND to face # 1 Neb, even though ND HAD CLEARLY PROVEN THEY WERE THE BETTER TEAM IN THE GAME OF THE CENTURY!! What a fraud that was. Deprived ND and Lou of his 2nd NC in 6 years. Lou was never quite the same after that travesty. Thank God the game video will forever remind us who the best team in college football was in 1993.
I always feel bitter sweet when I look back at this. A week later they lost to Boston College (a very good team btw) and costs themselves a chance at a title. They’ve never been the same since.

Exactly. Leads of 21-7, 31-17 with about 3 min left. FSU got the lucky tipped pass TD in the end zone to make the score look closer than it really was. The ND O line just plowed over FSU's vaunted D, and our RB shredded them.

I was only 4 when this game took place, but I remember one of the old NCAA College Football games they had classic finishes where you had to recreate history by playing out the scenario and this game in 93 between Notre Dame and Florida State was on there. If I am correct, was this not the first time ESPN's college game day went on the road for a game?

ND had a better record than Miami (12-1 vs 11-1) against a harder schedule (7 wins over top-20 teams) and were #1 all year with 23 straight wins, but Miami won the head-to-head so they finished #1. In '93, both teams were 11-1 and ND won the head-to-head, but FSU basically got a mulligan. FSU only fell to #2 after losing to ND, but ND fell all the way to #4 after losing to a top 15 BC team a week later.

As a Charlie Ward fan I was devastated! Not Lou Holtz and the Irish upsetting my boys with Kevin McDougal as the starter!! Kevin McDougal??!!! Really?!! So glad Boston College beat ND the next week and we were on our way to a National Championship!!!! Charlie....21-2 as a starter. Miami and ND were the only schools that beat him and the Seminoles over those 2 yrs.
McDougal was the better QB that day. Ward was throwing the ball all over the place. A travesty that the Irish got shafted by the pro Bobby media after the Irish clearly proved they were the better team by pulverizing FSU all afternoon. The tiebreaker was HEAD TO HEAD, and the media ignored this game as if it was never played. Absurd and ridiculous.
Called in sick at work to stay home and watch this game. The next week I actually got sick. No regrets though. Great game.

It wasn't even cold. 59 degrees at kickoff. I was there. It easily could have been 15 degrees and snow. The mauling would have been even worse.
