LMS 46233 Thunders Over The Devon Banks - The Royal Duchy 2016

  • Not since 2002 has a Coronation class ventured over the notorious South West banks, but on the first weekend of August 2016, Duchess of Sutherland would make for an unforgettable sight & sound as the class 8 digged it's heels in over some of the toughest mainline gradients the UK has to offer.
The day started at Whiteball Bank where the Duchess makes an early charge towards the tunnel passing us at a good rate of speed, although speed was just above par for this section, the smaller load has to be taken into account. Having now crossed into Devon the Coronation Class is seen tackling Tigley & Rattery as it thumps up the 1/52 section. With the loco being serviced at Plymouth I tried to make the dash to St Germans, but unfortunately my sat nav sent me to the ferry instead of the road bridge so that payed end to that ! Fortunately I was close to Devonport Station and I was able to make it there with two minutes to spare.
For the return leg and undoubtedly the highlight of the trip, the LMS stalwart would take on the immense climb of Hemerdon Bank. With a Westerly wind present everything was set up for a dramatic climb and Boy ! What a climb it was, with the Duchess sounding better than ever and with even more steam to spare. Now with the main event behind us, I dropped in at Tiverton Parkway for my final shot on the way home, where we see 46233 approaching the station slowly due to a 25mph clearance restriction. After clearing the station the loco can be heard working the way and lighting up the road bridge as it passed underneath.
A great day down south and without doubt possibly the highlight of the year on the mainline. Well it was for me anyway !
I hope you enjoy the video.

Toujours aussi bien filmé ! On resterait des heures à regarder évoluer ces superbes convois nostalgiques dans la campagne Anglaise...

There she goes....and only if my uncle Percy were alive to see her......but nearby he will be, on the footplate, if not in body in spirit. See, my uncle Percy was a top link driver for the LMS and later BR. He had driven 46233 and just about all the other Princess Coronation Class locos, most of the Royal Scot Class locos, and a smattering of the Patriot Class locos in his 46 - 48 year career. He could even remember back to the days of streamlining on the locos, when he was again on the footplate with them even then. I am sure that the demise of these beautiful creations, that he knew so intimately well, even to their individual characteristics and maintenance histories, in being carved up for scrap must have broken his heart in retirement. But to see 46233 today still thundering down the tracks would have filled him full of joy.......because for Percy this was more than just a job, it was a way of life, and he loved all those magnificent locomotives just as if they were his own children.

Absolutely stunning footage of the Duchess conquering the Devon banks with a great effort Liam! Best I've seen her on any bank and a wonderful capture of her displaying her amazing power! The sound of her exhaust, particularly at 0.50 and 3.06 was deafening and lingering in the distance at 2.02! You've done some brilliant videos but this must rank as one of your best. Thanks for a great show! Best wishes. Ken

Ken thanks for your kind long assessment it is much appreciated. The sounds that were coming from Duchess on Sunday, were the best I've ever heard from her and I'm glad I put the effort in on getting down there. Kindest regards, Liam

Great video material Liam, as usual ... the "ignition" of the smoke box contents under the bridge was special ... you'd wait a while to see that again. She has a lovely rhythm especially when climbing hard at full chat.

Great video.......for sheer brute power, the Duchesses must take first prize.
She appeared to develop a leaking inside cylinder later in the day, and seems to be working under easier steam.

Just a stuck cylinder drain cock, no real effect on loco performance. Stanier engines were commonly afflicted by it

Hi Liam, It was indeed a great day out on Sunday & a highlight of the year, I totally agree.
You did very well to get to all those locations. Great video footage.
I made the mistake of going to a very overgrown Dianton. Because of that I got held up by traffic in Totnes & therefore missed the Duchess by about a min at Trebole nr St. Germans. Like you my Sat Nav did not send me to the right spot. It sent me to St. Germans village!
The climb up Hemerdon made up for me missing the shot in Cornwall. The climb was brilliant! Sent goose bumps across my body. A special day to remember for a long time.
    Geraint

Thanks very much Geraint. Defitnely one of the best days for mainline steam this year. I purposely avoided Dainton as the shot was very difficult back in April on the GB and Totnes can be tricky to get through ! Thanks for comment. Regards, Liam

Great sight and sound, very nicely filmed as always. Shame it was such a light load, 9 coaches hardly seems respectable for such a powerful loco.

      @MarshSteamVideosTM  Před 8 lety +1

Thanks very much. Nine coaches is the limit for a single engine over the South West Banks, although we all know that the loco could of easily handled a couple more ! Great sounds regardless ! Regards, Liam
