What does my Japanese Husband think of America? DETROIT

- What's it like to visit America for the first time? My husband and I left Japan to come to Detroit, Michigan where I was born. I haven't been back in over 3 years and he's never been to America, so there will be a lot of culture shock!

This is something that I've heard and I'd like to know if it's true or not seeing as how you attended a sporting event with enthusiastic cheering.
Are sports fans in Japan far more reserved at sporting events in terms of being loud and celebrating a victory? Or is that just another myth?
You made me want to go to Michigan.
You should do a colab with @xiaomanyc
wait wait wait you're not going back to Japan with your husband?
Welcome to Detroit Michigan, Tommy. I’m glad he was able to experience many of Detroit and Michigan specialties like better maid, mackinaw fudge and apple cider.
Y’all had great seats at the Red wings game. Was he able to Comerica park and Ford field.
We need a Tommy acoss America series! Loved seeing his reactions, lol
I would love to do that if he could stay longer.
That be cool, especially like the main popular parts.. all of them be little too much.
I agree.. this needs to be a movie 🤗😎😁
This is just so funny. The cultural shock. Makes me just smile.
Tommy Tommy Tommy!
America is crying for Tommy are the best words to describe everything. I'm overjoyed he got to experience all of this especially with all of your family. It warms my heart and Tommy's stomach ❤
Thank you Wushaw. We stuffed him full of food. He couldn’t believe the portion sizes.
@@OrientalPearl Foreigners are always amazed at portion sizes in America. But then again I was amazed by the mammoth size of buffets in Korea.
@@OrientalPearl I was amazed too about the food portions because I am Dutch from Europe.
@@OrientalPearl All the sizes of everything, it was really funny seeing his reactions. "Must be nice.."
Welcome to the hood "homeboy" inlaw! Merry Christmas, Happy New Year ya'll....🙏🏽✌🏾🎅
As a Michigander, THANK YOU for showing Detroit in it's brightest light. Everyone associates Detroit with crime/danger, and I'm sure that keeps a lot of tourists away. It's really a fun town and state and you won't find a better orchard south of the Ohio border.
Thanks Joseph. I’m so glad you liked it.
I know it's like 8 months later, but I also live in the Detroit area and it's a really cool place in reality and I'm really glad I got to grow up here. Also, I only found out a few years ago that vernors was only a Michigan thing and now I'm scared to move away and lose such an amazing drink.
@@benb8321ikr
@@benb8321oh really? I live in Utah and they sell it at some grocery stores here.
Michigan has a rich German heritage.
This is a fun fact i have shared with only a few of my friends.
So cool knowing her family can speak japanese to make Tommy feel at home
The hugs are so precious. I know Tommy's not accustomed to them, but it's lovely that he's embraced American hug-culture :)
Yeah he’s used to giving hugs now.
American hug-culture is pretty well-known in Japan; my in-laws had a mix of trepidation and excitement the first time I went over to Japan that I might just hug them immediately. Of course I knew Japanese culture so I didn't, but some part of me thinks they were kind of hoping I would.
I think I did when we were leaving Japan on that trip, and have since then.
@@samsatogardner That's adorable... thanks for sharing!
Do the in-laws initiate hugs now? Or do they just go with the flow?
@@captain_britain Hahaha... my nieces will, but they're both 25 and under and I've known them since they were tiny. My sister-in-law won't initiate, but she will go with the flow.
I don't really do bro-hugs with BiL and my wife's dad. Might be a bridge too far. They're cool, though. Dad always tries giving me strange unmarked alcohols at some point in the trip (he spent many years as a tour guide, so picked up lots of local liquors), and BiL is a good guy though he works a lot.😁
He is seriously living his best life. He was so excited about everything 😊
Yeah, I was so glad he got to come.
It was so adorable! He truly enjoyed the experiences, in all 🥰 what a gem of a man.
There's a story behind Detroit's Coney dogs (for those who don't know): Despite the name Coney dog being named after Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY, the Coney dog originates from the Midwest. But why? In the early 1900s, many Greeks came to the US through Ellis Island to escape the Balkan Wars. Before moving to the Midwest, they stopped at Coney Island and had Nathan's world-famous hot dogs. They were so impressed that they wanted to spread it wherever they went and came up with their own recipes.
In Detroit, there's a tense rivalry between American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island right next door on which one has the better Coney dog. In fact, Lafayette Coney Island was actually founded by the BROTHER of the founder of American Coney Island! Like how Mister Donut became a thing because its founder Harry Winokur chose to no longer work with his brother-in-law, William Rosenberg the founder of Dunkin' Donuts.
Thanks for sharing the history of the place 😊
They were both recently closed for rats lol. They both just reopened
Thanks for the info Kim Jong Un!
Plus there are A LOT of other Coney Island type restaurants throughout the metro Detroit area. Many of them also serve Greek and/or Arabic food, in addition to broader "American" food items and the expected hotdogs with extra toppings.
About to go downtown and get me a Coney dog!! They re both really good
"Welcome to Detroit! You're running, why are you running?!" The transition between those two clips in the intro is the perfect way to describe what the typical person thinks when they hear Detroit 💀😂 I've had the opportunity to go to Detroit back in Spring Break 2019 for a robotics world championship and honestly had a blast! Hot dogs and pizza are two things Detroit does right. The crust of a Detroit-style pizza is absolutely perfect, especially a corner piece! Though I'm sure through this Detroit visit, Tommy's realizing he's been taking Japanese trains for granted when noticing how American cities are compared to Japanese ones. And love the fact even your father knows Japanese!
Cuba till we die traitor
I love the Japanese culture and watching videos of Japan but it was awesome seeing Tommy's experience here! I am from Chicago and love Michigan. I am glad he had a good time. It's important to learn and appreciate other cultures!
I couldn’t agree with you more.
I always loved Michigan for snow skiing.. lovely state
I'm from Chicago too! Detroit is like our sister city. Awesome.
Hey Alyssa, maybe it’s just me, and that’s ok if it is, but Tommie seemed the most authentically and openly Japanese in this video than any other. I think maybe the excitement of being in America, with you just turned him back into a little boy that couldn’t hold his excitement in at all. It made me happy. ❤
I think you’re right Scot. You can tell he’s never been here before.

Hello from Sweden! I must say that Tommys reactions to everything seemed so pure. He seems to be a really nice person and you both seem to be a really sweet couple :) I would love to visit both USA and Japan sometime in the future and both have been on my to-visit-wishlist for a long time. My GF has lived in Japan a few years ago and she loved it there and she speaks japanese aswell but she is swedish. Can't wait until the day i can afford to travel to Japan and USA :)
I hope your dream of coming the the US and Japan comes true!
As a Detroiter, this is pretty cool, just seeing his amazement is pretty fun to watch
Love watching different cultures and experiences.
That’s awesome. Lots more of that to come.
@@OrientalPearldid you introduce him to some gang members
@@OrientalPearl i loved his reaction to American sized homes.
@@youtubeuser206 aww, i see you are disappointed Detriot isn't what you expected it to be. How disappointing.
Being a Michigander and familiar with all the places you visited, this video made me happy. It’s great you were able to share Michigan with your husband. :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
I can not wait to bring my Filipina gf to America(Michigan) She's been wanting to see and experience the winter and snow.
Your husband is adorably cute and he enjoys everything. I want to go to Michigan. Lovely to watch!
Thank you. He was so happy to be here.
@@OrientalPearl When are you going back to Japan?
This brought back happy memories except I was the 19 year old American that moved to Japan. I was amazingly fascinated, especially when I had to learn to drive the Japanese roads!😊
I was working in Hokkaido and I had to return to the US after the job finished. My Japanese girlfriend Yumiko and I kissed, then I boarded my plane back to the States. Hardest heartbreak ever! That was over 40 years ago. I've been married twice but still miss the love I lost, Yumiko and amazing Japan!
That’s so cool that this video brought you back to those days
After living in Japan for temporary Navy duty, the day after I got back to CA,,, I started driving on the WRONG side of the road😂

He has a cast iron stomach to eat chili cheese fries and a loaded hot dog! So fun to see America through his eyes. I'm chiming in a year later. Thank you for the post and sharing Tommy's reactions. What fun.
It's so great watching him, I'm in stiches he is adorable. I'm so happy you kept going with your channel. You deserve all the success and happiness. Congratulations again ‼️
He had me cracking up too. He was so excited.
My literal neighbor!!! I would have absolutely been beaming with joy to have seen you guys!! I am so happy that you were able to come home and able to bring your husband with you! Vernors and Frankenmuth are so Michigan it is no joke!!! Thank you so so much for this video, it was such a treat!!! It gave me ear to ear smiles knowing that a fellow Michigander was able to bring her Japanese husband here to experience this beautiful state!!! Thank you for it!!!
Thanks so much Jessica. I’m happy to be your neighbor here in Michigan.
This video was the best advertisement for America I've ever seen.
As a person who lives in Livonia, I think you did a great job planning Michigan activities. Hope he comes back in the summer to visit the Great Lakes, maybe go tubing down the Au Sable, visit the sand dunes, watch fireworks (if around 4th of July), visit Mackinac, and take him to one of the "mystery spots". There's one in Irish Hills but there are a couple others too. It was so great to see him light up with each new experience.
LOLOL that is a LOT. He needs to stay for a few years maybe
Living in Ann Arbor, I'd say visiting the university that's on his Hoodie would be a must to see what US colleges are like (or at least one of the biggest ones) lol. There's no football games going on in the summer but all of the Japanese visitors I meet usually have a blast when I take them to a game at the Big House and tailgating!
Exactly; you can't visit Michigan without going to the world famous "mystery spot" up near Mackinaw.
I would also add Whitefish Point to that list of Upper Peninsula sightseeing; my family spent many summers in northern Michigan visiting Whitefish Point, and always had a beautiful time.
Livonia sounds like the name of a made up country in Eastern Europe.
There is so much of this I want to comment on because I loved every minute of it. From the Michigan welcome basket to Frankenmuth, to Campus Martius Park to Red Wings game to apple and pumpkin pie, it was so wholesome. I am excited for his adventures to continue in the summer. You two are adorable together.
Thank you Jenn. I wanted to make sure he had a very authentic Michigan experience lol.
I had the biggest smile on my face watching this! His excitement and awe was so wholesome! It’s so fun watching people experience where you’re from or things you grew up with and enjoy it. 🥰🥰
Aww, that’s so sweet Elise. Tommy had so much fun. He’ll be back again.
Just started watching your channel and your husband seems sooo sweet, kind and a wonderful human being. Wish you both good health and endless happiness.
I admire them both they are amazing! I especially her accomplishments in life, studying foreign languages,, great marriage and her over all love for life🎉
Absolutely loved Tommy's appreciation for the US. Broke my heart when he had to leave, even more so seeing him so emotional. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Alex. I was sad when he left too.
Your videos are so wholesome and happy, they are the perfect antidote in this chaotic world. KEEP LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE! ❤
Thank you so much Tony.
You took him to all the best places, exactly where I’d take a foreigner!! Yates is a 10/10 in the fall and Frankenmuth makes me SO excited for Christmas!!!
Thanks Owen. That’s so cool that you’ve been to those places too.
This is the most wholesome thing I’ve seen all week. I loved how happy he was. It really made me happy too. This video was exceptional!
I'm glad CZcams recommended this video to me. I'm so glad to see visitors enjoy America, especially during the holidays!
I don't know what to say, but seeing you both embrace each other's culture and just trying everything while being so cute with each other is really wholesome.
Thank you for sharing this part of your journey with us! I really do wish you and both of your families the best of luck and a happy future. :)
Your editing and music choice is also really good and entertaining!
I’m so glad you liked the music. I always put a lot of thought into it.
As a michigander i'd say you took him to all the right spots! looks like he loved it.
Thanks Danny. We got to visit the Henry Ford museum too.
You almost made me cry, I miss Christmas up north, but I lived in the UP.
Awww, I’m moved that this video made such an impact on you.
I didnt realize how much I missed the Detroit area since joining the military. this video really brought me back, seeing his reactions made me realize I've failed to appreciate my hometown when I was a kid. Back then I could only think of leaving, now I feel a longing to return with little or any opportunity to go back. Detroit and Michigan in general has a lot to offer that I took for granted. Thank you both for this video showing the awsome things I remember from my childhood.
This was my first time seeing a video of you and your husband together! He seems like such a kind and thoughtful person, it was heart warming seeing his reactions and happiness being there with everyone. I hope Tommy can visit again and make more great memories with you all!

There are many videos of people visiting Japan and seeing everything for the first time, but it’s very rare to see it the other way around! Was so excited for him to see everything! Love the videos, enjoy your time back stateside
Thanks Serene. It’s so cool to see Tommy’s reaction to America.
This is my first time to your channel and Tommy seems like an absolute delight!! I want to be around someone that happy all the time
After my first tour to Japan on 2015, I fell in love with the people, the culture, the cuisine, the land. Been back for two month long tours since and I've really enjoyed learning from the expat community on CZcams over the years. Been following your videos for a long time, but never realized you're a fellow Michigander! How wonderful to see you two enjoy family time over Thanksgiving and explore Detroit and Frankenmuth together. It put a big smile on my face to see Tommy wolfing down a coney in a U of M hoodie and washing it down with a Vernor's. Doesn't get much more Michigan than that!
The noises Tony makes when excited are so cute. ☺️🥰
I know right. He’s adorable.
Tommy's enthusiasm throughout the video was so great! He was so excited, it was adorable!
I know right. He was so cute!
Thank you for sharing such sweet memories with us. It's wonderful to see your family's love.
Bless him. What a wonderful experience for Tommy. His reactions are priceless. He's like a kid at Christmas. Merry Christmas to both of you ❤️
OMG....this video had me smiling from ear to ear...you two are soooooo meant for each other!!! Tommy looked so sad to leave, I was sad for him, but I think he really enjoyed himself while in America. I love how you wrap your arm around his neck, he is "your man for life!", and it shows! It's nice that your stepfather knows Japanese also, it makes Tommy feel so much more comfortable. I absolutely adore your videos, I wish you so much joy in your life, you deserve it! 💯❤❤❤

I was so excited for this video as a Michigander!! Most of the time when influencers come to America, they go to the big cities or come from the big cities so it's nice to be like, "Oh! I know exactly where they are" Thank you for making this video, Anming
Thanks Rebecca. I wanted to give Tommy the real authentic American experience.
@@OrientalPearl You definitely did lol I loved taking him to Coney Island. It puts in perspective how silly it can be for visitors to any contry to freak out about things that are otherwise normal (but it was super cute. I'm glad you both had fun!)

That was so nice to be taken on a journey with your Husband and family. It was bittersweet.
I'm crying cause this is exactly how my aunt, my cousin, and her husband reacted when they visited us in Bay Area, California from Japan! We took them to their first Warriors game, Giants game, Sharks game, 49er game, their first In-n-Out Burger, first legit Mexican food, first legit BBQ in Santa Cruz, first jazz band concert in San Jose, and the obvious iconic tourist places to visit (Facebook, Google, Apple, Golden Gate, Ghirardelli). It was so fun seeing their eyes sparkle at every place we went and all the people we met along the way that were able to make their first visit to America so much more memorable! I'm so happy to see Tommy got the same experience and you can totally see how happy he was!
Aww, really sweet to see how excited Tommy was to see everything. It's always nice to see and explore new places. :)
