  • New to The Fast Lane With Joe Tunney? Here's a short, funny video to get you up to speed: • Joe Tunney car salesma...
    The Toyota Supra was not only a generational icon, but one of the most important vehicles ever made. Why? Here's the link:
    • 1993 Toyota Supra Twin...
    Comparing the BMW Z4 vs Toyota Supra is like comparing identical twins.
    The 2020 BMW Z4 uses BMW's CLAR or "Cluster Architecture" platform and your choice of a 255hp/295 lb-ft torque 2.0L B48B20 4 cylinder or 382 hp/369 lb-ft 3.0L B58B30B 6 cylinder. Both engines are part of BMW's modular family of 500cc per cylinder inline engines.
    You may think the winner between the Toyota Supra vs BMW Z4 is based on personal preference but it's actually a painful lesson in marketing-induced buyer ignorance.
    The 2020 Toyota Supra comes with the larger motor exclusively. Although rated at 335 hp, it is actually exactly as powerful as the BMW Z4 M40i.
    Both BMW Z4 engines and the sole Toyota Supra engine come with ZF's 8hp transmission exclusively. Will there ever be a manual transmission? Time and the market will tell.
    Wheelbase on the Z4/Supra is 97.2 inches.
    Supra vs Z4 would be a real rest if any aspect of the vehicle had anything to do with Toyota. Therefore, the winner of BMW Z4 vs Supra is the BMW Z4 and the loser might be the poor consumer who buys the Supra and realizes nobody at the local Toyota store has ever worked on a BMW before.

    One is a coupe and one is a convertible, but I get what you mean...it would be weird spending so much money and servicing it at a place who has no idea how to fix it when you could have just bought it from the people who built it - and be able to put the top down.

      Toyota did the same thing with the FRS / Subaru BRZ but at least Subaru is technologically similar to Toyota. However, German cars have always been a handful for non-German dealers, especially when they get some miles on them and have more complicated issues relative to their Japanese peers. Then to call that car "Supra," it's just a poor choice by Toyota.

    Strange that if it is the “exact same car” that BMW charges 10k+ more. Sounds like it would be foolish to buy the Z4...

      The Fast Lane with Joe Tunney Funny though, BMW releases their 0-60 at 4.3. Toyota releases at 4.1, the next day BMW releases a new number lower than the Toyota, I think 3.9....in the end, car and driver tests the Supra at 3.8. Lol
      I am sure you could take it to a BMW dealer if you wanted to....but why would you want too? You like paying more money just for the hell of it?
      I, for one, would rather service it at a Toyota dealership rather than getting ripped off for the same service at BMW.
      Unless your Supra blows something internally in the engine, there is nothing special about working on BMWs. I have owned four of them: M5, 335i, 650i, and X5. I am a nobody that likes working on my cars. Other than some costum exhaust work on my M5, anyone with some basic understanding of cars can work on a BMW.
      You can easily download the factory, dealership level software from Bimmergeeks and do your own work on your BMW.
      Suspension, ignition, exhaust, cooling system, HVAC, electrical systems, they are very similar amongst cars. Just make sure to have a torx set for removing all the plastic in the bmw engine bay.
      Toyota dealerships that are selling the Supra have to purchase the additional software and tools, as well as additional training. I have confidence that the brand that makes the most reliable cars on the road will be able to service the Supra.
      Worst case scenario, find an Indy shop.

      Since forever, Japanese dealers have had a terrible time with German and an even worse time finding mechanics capable of handling German cars. It's a cultural thing where you're either into one or the other. For that reason, very few Japanese dealers handle used German cars, regardless of extra training, etc. When I managed for Infiniti, we had several German-capable mechanics which gave us a HUGE advantage on the marketplace. Therefore, we carried a lot of German cars and were perennially the #2 used Infiniti department in the western US behind Sewell in Texas, who is #1 in the country every year - and has lots of German-capable mechanics. Because warranty wok can only be done at the dealer who sells the car new, Toyota must do warranty work on the Supra and you might think that should be no big deal but I'm telling you now that there will be as many horror stories as there are Supras on the road....as for the 0-60 times: I posted on Linkedin that this marketing campaign crosses the line on the ability to lie to the general consumer. By paying around with the horspower numbers and 0-60 times, it's creating suspicion that at a minimum there must be some involvement on the part of Toyota in this car. There is none. Toyota ultimately bought a Z4 coupe and put their stickers on it...just like you and me buying a Z4 and putting Honda S2000 stickers on it. No difference whatsoever.

      It's no different than the Porsche Boxster / Cayman twins. One is a coupe and one is a convertible. Same car, but a coupe is structurally more composed. This would be exactly the same if the convertible version was sold as a Porsche and the coupe was sold by Ford as the all new Ford Mustang. The car itself is awesome, it's just weird that Ford was trying to pass off a German car as the rebirth of an American classic. I just posted what Motor Trend had to say, but it's worth posing again:
      "Mama and Papa Toyota gave birth to strong, athletic sports cars, starting with the suave 2000GT, sent to boarding school in Coventry and raced by Carroll Shelby. Through the years the family grew to include lithe Celicas, stalwart Supras, even a scrappy rear-drive Corolla GT-S or two. Then something happened, and Mama Toyota found herself unable to conceive sports cars. An impatient Papa Toyota summoned his Fuji concubine, Subaru-san, who gave birth to identical twins-one of which he graciously allowed her to keep. Mama Toyota was furious and forbade Papa Toyota from ever showering his son, 86, with any affection or horsepower. To woo back his betrothed, who desperately wished to birth another great sports car, Papa Toyota hatched a plan to artificially inseminate an auspicious European egg for Mama Toyota to gestate. She's just given birth, and now the world must determine how this half-breed stacks up against its all-Toyota siblings.
      We created this origin-story myth for the joint development of the A90-generation Supra out of frustration when it proved impossible to pin down exactly what roles Toyota and BMW played in the initial design of this new car. The inline-six turbo is obviously all BMW's-it served as the inspiration for this hook-up in the first place. ("Thy Supras Shall Have I-6 Engines" was chiseled as the forgotten 11th commandment.) Most invisible parts are shared and apparently developed by BMW, if the roundel stickers, engravings, and casting marks are to be believed."
      Plus the car is built on the BMW CLAR platform and assembled in Austria with no Toyota parts of any kind.

    $50-70k to make an brand line of new engine for a brand new car? This guy does not even know what he was talking about. Plus by the end of the day, the supra will hold its value because it’s got “toyota” badge on it, and this Z4 will drop in value by 80% by year three of there ownership. BMW was made for lease, not to own...

    • @everycarSeattle
      @everycarSeattle  Před 5 lety +1

      The Supra was based off of the Lexus SC platform and currently Lexus has several sports car platforms to choose from...and that's just in the US, since they have other cars around the world that could be the basis for a new Toyota sports car...so yes, they could easily make this car in-house for under $70,000. This is the 2nd time Toyota has re-badged another brands sports car, since they did the same with the Subaru BRZ in making the Scion FR-S / Toyota 86 and those cars aren't worth any more than the Subaru. You're point that the "BMW was made for lease not to own" is exactly the problem here...Toyota owners are going to freak out when Toyota can't fix their cars because they are so different than anything Toyota makes, will make or has ever made. You're going to hear horror stories of software issues and dealers sending their "Toyota" to BMW to get fixed. It's fine that Toyota is re-selling a BMW with their own name on it, but to call it the Supra I think will end poorly for all involved. The Supra is one of the greatest cars in the history of cars and this doesn't come close to living up to that standard for Toyota.

If you say the 86 is a Subaru, Subaru didnt even want to be apart of the project, one of the reasons being is that they want to just stick with making awd cars, but what can they do? Toyota owns a bit of Fuji and Subaru just went along with it and it became a success

    • @everycarSeattle
      @everycarSeattle  Před 5 lety

      Actually the 86/FR-S/BRZ uses a modified Impreza platform, Subaru running gear (including a Subaru Boxer engine), electronics and suspension...then is built entirely by Subaru. Here's what Motor Trend has to say about the relationship between the Toyota and "their" 86 and Supra sports cars:
      "Mama and Papa Toyota gave birth to strong, athletic sports cars, starting with the suave 2000GT, sent to boarding school in Coventry and raced by Carroll Shelby. Through the years the family grew to include lithe Celicas, stalwart Supras, even a scrappy rear-drive Corolla GT-S or two. Plus, it is built on BMW's CLAR platform just like how the 86 is built on the Impreza (though modified by Subaru for this application) platform...and of course, neither car is assembled or built in any way by Toyota.

They both use different versions of the b58 between the two and Toyota tuned their own cars. This seemed like more of a promo video for the local BMW dealership he was filming at . And why would anyone be cross shopping the Z4 and Supra two completely different cars with different setups, causes and demographics. This is from Forbes a couple of weeks ago: Message boards and comments sections have been alive with snarky comments criticizing Toyota Motor Corp.’s new Supra sports coupe, which journalists are reviewing and will arrive at dealers this summer. Some Supra fans have questioned whether the new rear-wheel-drive coupe, debuting after a twenty-year absence in the U.S., bears too much resemblance to its kissing cousin, a BMW Z4 roadster. If Supra’s authenticity proves deficient, it surely would disappoint the many who have been urging Toyota to revive a model that has turned into a classic.“No doubt the new Supra is tainted a bit because it’s so much BMW in what should be a pure Toyota,” said Drew Johnson, managing editor of Left Lane News, a digital automotive enthusiast publication. In addition to the engine “so many of the interior touch points are BMW,” such as infotainment system’s control knob.
      Also, from Jalopnik: Both cars are built by contract manufacturer Magna Steyr in Austria, too, hence the Supra’s VIN starting with a W
      Toyota doesn't build any aspect of this car...they have fluffed how they had unique input and special design attributes...it's a Z4 that says Toyota Supra, plain and simple.

      @@everycarSeattle the First misconception from the people have wrong from the get go "it's just a rebadged z4" ...?? Wtf if both companies jointly designed the chassis how is either car one or the other. And yes we know that the car is using some BMW parts such as the engine and some interior bits but like I said if you or most people actually researched more or drove the cars themselves they'd see that both cars have different identities being Toyota setup and tuned their own cars and both cars are setup different to connect to different audiences and even different "class members". Yes it's not being made at Toyota plants but it's made at Magna steyr which is not owned by BMW or even a BMW plant. They manufacturer vehicles for multiple cars brands and or whoever pays them money. Also at which is cheapest option for using solid plants that could build these cars at the same place without having to ship so much from both Germany and Japan. From a Toyota purest look in it sucks that it's not being made in toyota plants. But looking at it at a business standpoint it makes sense to use magna steyr to build the cars. Neither car is a copy of the other. They were jointly designed in the beginning aspects (chassis and form) and finished by their own respective companies. Both heads of BMW and Toyota have even said this. Stop the misinformation and research for shit yourself guy just like the guy in that Forbes article just blabbed on and not apparently knowing all the info

      @@marcmann982 That part about "both companies jointly designed the chassis" is the frustrating part. That chassis is 100% BMW and 0% anyone else. It is not a platform specific to any one car family, it is the platform BMW uses to build all of their cars from the Z4 through the 3 series to even the X5 and X7. It is called BLW CLAR or cluster architecture. BMW didn't seek out Toyota's guidance several years ago to develop a common platform for the future of their entire brand. ...and Toyota didn't use their own engineering to make the Z4 their own. Case in point: BMW makes a small front wheel drive based SUV, the X1 and X2. These SUV's use Aisin transmissions, not ZF transmissions. Aisin is made by Toyota. Toyota certainly could make their Supra with an Aisin transmission, after all, they are "making the car to their unique standard," and since BMW isn't making transmissions these days, who cares if Toyota uses their own. Toyota isn't using their own because Toyota has nothing to do with this car. It's BMW's platform, running gear, suspension, idrive, etc...the fact that Toyota claims to be involved when they aren't isn't that big of a deal, but to do it on a car called the Supra is a total bummer. If you saw my review on the original Supra you'd understand why I think the Supra is one of the most important cars of all time and one deserving a more honest and inspired effort from Toyota. It would be no different than if Acura rebadged the Z4 a 3rd way and called it the NSX.
