Here’s a BMW 4 Series drag race you didn’t realise you needed… Until today!
We’ve got Ben Collins lining up in a new BMW M4, and he’s facing off against Mat in an old BMW 430d?!
Seems like a foregone conclusion, right?! Well trust us - this is no regular 4 Series! It may still have a 3-litre straight six under the bonnet, but it’s had several thousand pounds spent on it and as a result, it now produces an eye-watering 462hp and 1017Nm of torque!!
As for the M4, well that’s stock, so it arrives with a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six that can put down 510hp and 650Nm.
They’re both RWD, and the 430d is around 200kg lighter than the M4. But surely a diesel can’t beat an all-new M4, right?! There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

I really want to see what the 430 does in dry conditions
430 in dry conditions even can match against Murcielago LP640.
An xdrive version with same tune. Would be an absolute weapon

Not good, watch officially gassed video on the diesel vs m4. In a diesel the actual power out down is a lot less due to the gearing. It’s better compared to the f82 m4 at 430-450 bhp.
I'm quite impressed with how well the diesel gets off the line
Well with over 1000 Nm of torque, it would get of the line quick, however I am too impressed by the fact that it didn't have much wheelspin.
It's got me wondering about how well a European retuned SAAB 9-3 Twin turbo diesel would do against an American SAAB 9-3

@@beastofackworth excess fuel has to be added to get pops and bangs when revving at stationary. When it's moving it hardly smokes for a highly modified diesel.
Darkside Developments can tune it with almost no smoke but you loss a little bit of down low torque as spool time is increased.
The soot on the back of the car says a different story
Hi Mat, small suggestions from me. Request your editing team to put speedometer view of both cars in a corner, so viewers can see top speed achieved and at what speed being overtaked.
I think the difficulty here is that during the drag race they use multiple angles and sometimes go back a few seconds in the drag race to show different perspectives of the race.
Maybe they could do their normal edit and then leave in a single shot 1 cut of the drag race with speed overlays and other data.

@@souljayt8411 That doesn’t help with the editing does it? It gives you the data, and May uses his specialist timing gear on all the other videos so they have that at their disposal which is miles better than a crapppy draggy appy 😂😂

We need more tuned drag races and drone footage like this!!! Also, for drag races, can you add the 0-60mph times and braking distances in the videos as visuals as well as a speed trap at the 1/4-mile mark, if you can. I speak on behalf of everyone watching these videos. Thank you.

Darkside really know their diesel tuning, had my seat ibiza fr 2.0tdi normally 143bhp and 320nm, they managed to get it to 197bhp and 480nm! Had the car for 6 years no issues whatsoever
From your knowledge, does a tune last forever? Or do you need to re-tune the car after sometime?
@@maximc9033 tunes last forever, most tunes will be ok for the life of the car, however as engines wear and mileage increases a custom tune like I had really maxed out the turbo/flywheel pushing everything hard, I would tone things down a notch on high mile cars
Well within 2.0 tdi capability and likely a map and egr delete....these guys have cam swapped, mapped, exhaust and loads of other stuff !
@@aboddle8878 at the time the car had limited development, it was around 10years ago now, but what they can get out of diesel engines is pretty insane
@@maximc9033 i have a 535d e60 with downpipes, custom exhaust, kn air filter, hybrid single turbo instead of the twin turbo, its on 2.8 bar, m550d fuel injector, m550d water pump, Wagner ic has a remap to 530hp and 1100nm and its going well, just change the oil and tires, michellin 305 85 r19
that was probably the most interesting and at the same time thrilling race so far

I had the 430d 2016 plate for 3 years from new. Amazing car, and surprisingly family friendly with the hatchback boot. Excellent steering, tremendous torque. It's best suited as a GT for long cruises. And of course... it looks stunning in the lowered 430d guise. Xdrive versions are 3-4cm higher and look jacked up and less sporty, so either stick with the 430d for the 6 cylinder or get the xdrive and get some after market springs.
The drone shorts are amazing! We want more drone shorts in future drag races!

Damn, this has got to be the most impressive diesel i've seen in a while.
I've been on the diesel hype train for the past 2 years. I own a 15' TDI golf sport wagon. Absolutely LOVE the car. Averaging 40mpg, 500-540 a full tank (depending on how I drive)
Bone stock it's really fun being quick off the line, and torquey. It's not fast.
But the mods available especially the interchangeability. I hope to make it an awd with either the alltracks drive train or a used Audi.
My dad's tdi A6 is a BEAST.

Love a tuned diesel.
Got an E92 330D m-sport running 300bhp and 630Nm with an XHP stage 3 gearbox map. Love it. Quicker than most things on the road and still gets close to 50mpg on the run😎😎
Loved this. I have this generations 3 series 330d and I know it isn't special but cool to know what the engine is capable of.
You should have a drag race with all the regulars in the same car, be interesting to see who wins.

As a BMW fan, though the new one is growing on me, the original 4 series is such a great looker. Subtle and classy with a hint of aggression.
Also, It’s unbelievable how a diesel can put that much power and torque out.
I once owned an 2011 E90 335d. Loved it. One of the best cars from stop light to stop light. The torque was amazing, and rhe diesel was so smooth. Back then they had egr issues it carbon buildup was a real problem.

Doubt it. My 335d does 35 max with around 370hp.
@@levimiller2551It's all In how you drive and journey length, especially in cold temperatures . My f3x 335d will only get 37mpg around town at best but when I was commuting last year doing 50 mile round trips it would get 48mpg if I took it easy around 60 mph down country roads .

@@gercobosch2870I have a stage 2 435D xDrive (AWD). People always ask me “why didn’t you just buy an M4?” at car meets and this video is the perfect explanation. I’m not even £30k deep into the car+mods and I smoke F8x M3/M4s… while still maintaining 50mpg on the highway and about 38mpg combined. My maintenance costs are ridiculously low because my diesel is the most reliable BMW I’ve ever owned. My first BMW was a 550i GT with the TT 4.4L V8 and my second was a 330e iPerformance with the 2.0T up front and electric motor in the rear. Buying the 435D was the best decision I ever made.
@@gercobosch2870 people tend to still underestimate diesels nowadays when in reality they’re no longer just eco or hard working engines… I got to have a go in a 2021 Audi S4 last year and honestly the bi-turbo 3L in that was absolutely insane and sounded nothing like what you’d expect from a Diesel. Sure it wasn’t tuned and I dare say the RS4 would beat it, but I don’t think it would be all that drastic of a difference as one would expect.
Think the only thing that would put me off that 430d is the amount of smoke that bellows out of it and how much that’ll cover the back end… too many boy racers around my neck of the woods causing problems, developed a bit of a dislike for the telltale Passats and the like with soot black rear ends
@@barghest9810 yeah I don't like the smoke either. But probably they deleted the DEF/adblue. Which would burn away said smoke.

What you want)) You can get easily 700+ hp from old OM606 Merc’s diesel engine
If it's the older M57 diesel then crack on the newer N57 like in this video have chocolate main bearings.

Darkside Developments tuned my Scirocco TDI and remapped the DSG as well. Drives so nice now with effortless "OoOmPh" on tap.

For some reason since the e92 i always prefer a tuned x30-x35 than the M ones. A lot cheaper and with the right mods you have a great package.
That’s maybe because the M3 engines after the E92 were far less bespoke than previous generations
I mean, that should be the reverse, no? In the E92 gen, the M is slower than the 335i after it gets a 100$ tune, but the M stays the same unless it gets forced induction, after market SC is like 10k..on the other hand the gen after the E92, they're all turbo'd six cylinders, the M and the 340 and 335.So the difference between them is literally just "the lesser version is less powerfu stock, but you can gain good gains, the better version is the same but more powerful stock and can have even better gains, the best is etc. And so on.
There's really no reason to get a x30-x35-x40 instead of the M after the e92 gen if you have the money, whereas the difference between E92 gen trims is a fun but slow NA V8 (M) or the straight line king twin turbo I6 (335i n54) that can easily be faster than the V8 M3. They're basically two cars for two completely different audiences, as for the new bmws, it's basically just better trim=better car, simple as that, no huge difference just better in all categories, more power, more potential, better undercarriage.
What kind of person would choose a 4 cylinder bmw over a 6 cylinder M engine if he has the money and is into cars? 🤷

@@paradox5556 Yeah maybe there are existing Diesel cars but most manufacturers have now stopped making Diesel cars. That's why they are getting rare and maybe we will never see new diesel car.

Ikr🤣 not only that but something else was making him nervous after the 2nd race when he started looking at the dash. That Diesel will be a nightmare as they're abysmal reliability stock nevermind tuned.
@@bigduphusaj162 These diesels have amazing reliability. They're known as one of BMW's best engines in that regard. Had my stage 1 f30 335D for 5yrs without any issue.
@@bigduphusaj162 No, sorry but you are wrong. A tuned diesel is a lot better in reability than a stock diesel. The 335d 2009-2011 for example stock have a lot of problems and tuned you can those problems go away. I have a VW mk6 Jetta TDI tuned with Darkside downpie and egr delete kit and it´s so much better than stock also a lot more reliable.

Love these British tests of who’s traction control is better.
For people not understanding why the 1017nm torque did not gap the petrol . The petrol torque spread is very wide while the stated 1017nm of torque will only be present for a very short moment

@@vladislavdimitrov4646just how diesels work, only really in power from 2k to 4.3k ish . I have one of these engines and they’re great but the max power isn’t there the whole rev range
Thats not really true though, its because torque does not matter for acceleration, only horsepower does.

I guessed somewhere around 800nm at the smart and my jaw dropped when he said 1000nm, thats insane.
On these you get around 800Nm with just a 240kW-ish.
