Snapper Longline Fishing From A Charter Boat

We chartered the boat Sea Genie skippered by Eugen de Bruyn and went for a mid winter fishing trip to the Noises Islands in the Hauraki Gulf. Ten of our clients joined us and as fishing with the rods and reels was very slow we set two PFS snapper longlines twice - around half the traces had floating beads fitted. We caught a 14kg kingfish, 10 snapper, nine blue mackerel and a gurnard on the longlines. The 12 fishermen on the boat took a combined catch of 12 legal sized snapper and four trevally after 8 hours fishing with their rods and reels. The first longline sets delivered the best catches, both were baited with fresh mullet. The final two sets only caught a few fish and we put this down to setting over slack water as we had baited them with the blue mackerel we caught on the previous set. We have a couple of co-operative charter boat operators who enjoy their clients setting a longline, on this trip 10 customers joined us for a great day out.
