Wow I saw at least 11 fish pull free from their hooks. They need better or at least sharper hooks. I always use the sharpest hooks on my trot lines it greatly improves your catch ratio. Great video, thanks for making it. It's good to actually see what's going on under the water.
those are circle hooks buddy. they neuter the effectiveness of a long line by making you use circle hooks to obey laws. that's what they did to us with pelagic long lines.
So many years of commercial fishing under my belt.dragging.long linining.gill netting ect but tub trawling for cod like this amazed me seeing it underwater
I remember when I worked on one of these boats in the Bering Sea out of Dutch Harbor and I secretly baited my tub with full squids. Each squid was around 18" and when we pulled in the line later on, we had a whole string (each string section was around 250-300') with giant colleron (sp?) around 40-70lbs ea. I woulda' got in trouble though if they caught me. The guy watching the lines go out saw the tub I baited and they just made a general announcement not to do that. One colleron was so big that when the gaffer was slingin' the big ones to his right, a small guy was standing there and it hit him in the chest knocking him flat on his back. He was yelling for help as this 70+lb cod was flopping on top of him. I was coiling incoming line right there and saw the whole thing. Pretty funny stuff. I just remembered; after we got those giant cod, other guys started baiting their hooks with larger pieces of squid and we got more of those giants. Certain buyers wanted the larger fish and the Japanese only bought the very small ones. But it was after more guys started using larger chunks of squid that they told us not to use so much bait. 40,000lbs of bait went pretty quickly on a boat like that.
dont think it is a problem with hooks looks like point is being obscured by bait,if you look at shot where a smaller bit is taken they hook up every time
What happened to your hooks? How come almost every fish managed to spit the bait out? Did you use barb less or dull hooks? I think you need to sharpen the hook tip and reduce the bait size so it will expose the tip of the hook for easy cling. You could make 1 of 1 when you did it properly.
+Armand Orsolino u would not be losing fish if u set the hook if this was a rod and reel. On long lines, there are so many hooks that it doesn't even matter
It goes to show how easily a cod can eject a hook on a slack line! if you were fishing you would strike and wind in immediately setting the hook. Most cod I have caught have the hook well down!
there ulua hooks. the U is deep. so if if it hooks they cant get out. most of this fish was only holding onto the bait. but as soon as they got hooked. they cant get out.
Love to know what kind of bait and hooks were used. Fish were biting "scratchy", nibbling but not committing but still a horrible hook up ratio. Wonder if it's a baiting issue where the baits are too frozen or covering the hook points or if the hooks just are wrong.
In a lot of places government won’t allow you to use treble hooks or hooks with barbs. When we went to barbless hooks cut our catch down by 60 percent. So to make up we just have to set that many more lines
Hi, I am currently working on a documentary about fishing in Europe. In one part we highlight the historical fishing and I wonder if we could use some of this great material? Best regards Mattias
I'm sure this guy has done the math on expensive hooks compared with numbers and found that he's fine ... Those lines r down 12+ hours we only saw 11 min I'm sure the hooks fill up over time maybe fish take some bait off and exposes more hook not sure but with that many fish u don't need a 1:1 hookup ratio
These are probably circle hooks. they take longer to hook a fish but they STAY on once they're hooked, even with a slack line. If you used normal J hooks, you would get hookups sooner but the hook hole would get bigger as the fish struggled to the point where just about every fish would drop off the hook when there's no tension.
Deveria que prestar maos atençao na hora de colocar a isca , o peixe esta pegando e depois saltando !!! Deveria qie ser um anzol mairo e uma isca mais fragil
Better way of fishing than the super destructive beam trawlers. Also bycatch needs to be more heavily regulated and people found breaking the rules (which is almost every commercial fisherman in the world) should be banned from fishing for life.
Interesting, informative and never boring!
Great footage, It's surprising how many fish manage to spit the hook on a longline.

Great video, thanks for making it. It's good to actually see what's going on under the water.
Those fish has a skill to pull out the hooks from their mouth..most of those hooks doesn't sharp enough.the baits too hard
those are circle hooks buddy. they neuter the effectiveness of a long line by making you use circle hooks to obey laws. that's what they did to us with pelagic long lines.
It's BECASSUSE the bait isnt baited properly. I have never seen dull hooks unless they are old
Very interesting video. I done a lot of wreck fishing and often thought cod was more aggressive feeders but I see how reeling in the bite hooks them .
So many years of commercial fishing under my belt.dragging.long linining.gill netting ect but tub trawling for cod like this amazed me seeing it underwater
Nice video, thumbs up from us and cheers from sunny IGY Simpson Bay Marina, Sint Maarten in the Caribbean.
Many great and big fish there..
Love your video
this footage is awesome
Wonderful! Excellent clarity!
coole sache, geiles video, danke dafür!
I've never seen anything like it, simply extraordinary, what variety is this fish, where is it, how deep is the bait?
Shark. South Arctic. 7,500 m.
Wow Sir amazing view underwater, I think it's good spear fishing there.. I click the bell in your house keep vlogging, keep safe
who ever sold you those Fish hooks has a great sense of Humor...
nice view under water..great job bro..👍
really love this video..informative ..can learn how to make an efficient rig..thank you so much..hopefully you can make more video like this..
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
So sad. Thanks for showing what really goes on.
un gran vídeo. me encanta
Cool video ! Thanks !
incredible footage, I will never "set the hook" the same
I love this video I have watched many times
You are actually watching the oceans being destroyed. Watch the Japan nets scooping millions of fish each day
Need to play this to your hook supplier and ask for your money back!
It's most likely whoever baited the hooks did a bad job and covered the hook point with the bait
8:55 lol, are you petting the cod?
My favorite hook is the japanese Gamakatsu, a killer hook, for fingers too...
For me the sharpest and the most effective.
Today, there is 7 connoisseurs..
The diver just down there casually snipping them free lol
The line is just sitting out there, should be circle hooks .. or at least sharper hooks. Interesting POV video though.
A casual trying to tell professionals how to do there job.

You're the reason why captains charge the crew for bait. Dollar a hook bs
ToshiroHoshi gjyo
May use squid prey for catch squid more and more !
ToshiroHoshi v
Im hooked on this video
No pun intended 🤣
Wow amazing 😘
Amazing...
I have some fishing spots a cam like this would be cool to have :)
dont think it is a problem with hooks looks like point is being obscured by bait,if you look at shot where a smaller bit is taken they hook up every time
How long would a typical longline be?
Wow hermoso cardumen
Blunt hooks or no barbs but it’s a good informative vid the most sustainable way to fish
the most used bait in norway/iceland is mackerell, herring and often squid/sauri.
What happened to your hooks? How come almost every fish managed to spit the bait out? Did you use barb less or dull hooks? I think you need to sharpen the hook tip and reduce the bait size so it will expose the tip of the hook for easy cling. You could make 1 of 1 when you did it properly.

Bryan Rose
Intresting, but sad to see the many hooked fish awaiting "harvest". Thanks for sharing
Looks like the bait is covering up the point of the hooks, a few of em got stuck tho
Everyone's a know it all...
not the cod
What is the average depth on video?
In a lot of places government won’t allow you to use treble hooks or hooks with barbs. When we went to barbless hooks cut our catch down by 60 percent. So to make up we just have to set that many more lines
overloaded the hook with bait , not enough gap for the point to penetrate.
Gamakatsu Circle C baithooks are needed here
wow amazing
Circle hooks would be awesome for this
from what I saw need to use different bait as well as hooks
But they were biting the Haiti.
3:20 No NO I'VE BEEN HOOKED
a lot of fish getting off. Are those J hooks or circle hooks?
i bet circle hooks would dominate on this rig
Amazing how many fish let go of the bait. ..so many fish
not a good comercial for mustad hooks i guess.....
cool video though
👍
Is there any hook at all?
Nice video
Some firefly attached to the hook would keep them interested even if the bait was gone, would become a like a feathered jig.
Poor hook-up ratio but ultimately effective as the fish eventually tear the bait enough to expose more of the hook point.
Hi,
I am currently working on a documentary about fishing in Europe. In one part we highlight the historical fishing and I wonder if we could use some of this great material?

Mattias
What did you use as a bait ?
Macrel
theyre look delicious!! it makes me hungry..
fryed with hush puppys
KEEP LONGLINING!!!!
Looks like a lot of fish Breaking Free but I'm sure when they finally haul the line in there will be a cod on every hook.
what good is a fish if you cant eat it
are the hooks barbless looooooooooooool
sustainable type of fishing hook and line cannot over fish like nets
Incidentally are the hooks too small ?
Are these black cod like Pacific Cod Atlantic cod look abit different i think? Not as narrow looking
Are they not using circle hooks?
What are the hooks made of , plastic?
Amazing ways of cathing fish with camera down under the deep.👍
The big one gets away 1000 times a day.
the best
the camera might jst putted from under water in the big Aquarium?! :(
nice...
Nice fish
Woew bnyk ikan

is this a viable method for catching walleye?
Illegal
This must be HOOKSPIT longliners!
Hahahahaha!👏👏👏

littlegoobie
littlegoobie
looks to me bait is masking point of hooks and as said before trebles hook up better
Those hooks are made from candy or what?
👍👍👍👍💗
yum yum!
half the fish are getting off
what is the bait sir?
And there supposed to be no cod left
This is nowhere near UK. Probably Norway.
Deveria que prestar maos atençao na hora de colocar a isca , o peixe esta pegando e depois saltando !!! Deveria qie ser um anzol mairo e uma isca mais fragil
This is why I fish gamakatsu
Mantap 👍👍👍🙏
Terrible hook rate.
They did on purpose, just for video

Silly fish, as well as fishermen !!
💪💪👍👍🤩🤩🤩😍😍🎣🎣🤠
😍👍😘🇧🇷👋👋👋
Hooks need to be sharpened so they don’t spit them out and get away.
Man sharpen those hooks, OMG
