The truth about Mono Rigs

  • There are a bunch of different ways to setup a mono rig. You can tweak it to fish one way better than another, but I chose an all-around recipe.
    36' of 20lb Chameleon (amzn.to/34sQbp7)
    2' of 12lb Chameleon (amzn.to/3naYxs1)
    2mm Tippet Ring (amzn.to/3HRQg4l)
    /*****Sighter Section
    *1' of 12lb Green Amnesia (amzn.to/330eMRW)
    *1' of 10lb Blaze Orange Trilene Sensation (amzn.to/3zCRk9c)
    *1' of 10lb Gold Stren with a backing barrel (amzn.to/3HQsTIu)
    *****/
    2mm Tippet Ring (amzn.to/3HRQg4l)
    Tippet set at a length to reach the bottom of the water I was fishing.
    Generally 3' of 4x to a tag and about 2' of 5x down to the point
    The sighter can be build pretty much anyway you want, in fact you can use off the shelf 1X sighter material, but I think some of the hi-vis mono is brighter and easier to see. This section can be only 2' long if you prefer. I like it longer because its easier for me to find on the water after I cast it.

    That river is ideal for Euro nymphing. Beautiful. Full of pockets.
    On a side note: Fish don't 'eat' the fly. They aim to, but the angler ruins their plan. Fish 'take' the fly.

      I am glad you are ok. Be careful everyone fishing in these conditions. My buddy just got airlifted out of the Upper Sac in mid Dec. He took a fall and went for a swim. He got stranded on a rock in the middle of the river. Thankfully, he was with a group. They got the first responders there in an hour in a half. Basically, there was not choice but to bring the copter in. They air lifted him out of the river to a waiting ambulance. He barely made it out alive, poor guy. They cut off his waders and treated him for hyperthermia. He lost over a thousand dollars in gear, not to mention the bill from the county. His story is going to be published in March episode of California Fly Fisher Magazine. It's a reminder for us all, to be careful, especially when fishing solo. Be safe everyone.

    So I have been fishing my euro rod with regular floating line lately and tight lining with the same floating line. It makes for a very easy system. Also my euro rod has been a very versatile rod with the right weight floating line.

    • @driftstone
      @driftstone  Před 2 lety

      Oh nice, I've never been able to get a straight answer on what weight fly line to get. I've got a 3wt, but that's relaly just the tip. The butt section is more like a 5. So I was thinking a 3wt line wouldn't load the rod well, and 5 wt would be hard to control. I thought a 4wt might be a good compromise....so who knows :)
      Casting 20lb mono is lighter than a 3wt line, so I might like having a lighter line

    • @colbymyers6278
      @colbymyers6278 Před 2 lety +1

      @@driftstone so I cast 5wt on my 3wt all the time and 6wt on my 4wt and it works great. However 5wt on the 4wt still casts really well, it just depends on if im casting a indicator and how big. or if Im casting a weighted streamer, jig head nymph, ect. Personally casting big bobbers and indicators is the hardest and requires a heavier line. Like the 6wt line on my 4wt euro rod. Also the long length of the euro rods makes it so you can pick up and put down a lot more line off of the water. For strictly euro nymphing, mono is the way to go. I have just been seeing how simple I can get my setup while still being functional

    • @flowflyfishing2131
      @flowflyfishing2131 Před 2 lety

      Sounds similar to my set up. For me, it's all about versatility, with a decent floating line, I can go from tight lining to swing wets, throwing streamers, or cast dry flies 60 feet out with nice loops. in addition, I can roll cast an indicator or any other rig. It's sort of crazy, even with my older fly fishing friends, no one appreciates a good double taper line any more- it's my favorite.

    • @driftstone
      @driftstone  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Jarl. I'm normally targeting trout, but there's no reason you couldn't target other species. I think the biggest drawbag of fishing a mono rig is casting distance. I feel like 35-40' is the max and since you can't roll cast, you'll need that same amount of room for the back cast. That said, if the fish you're targeting are in that range, you'll get em. I haven't done it yet, but fishing from a boat would be a snap with a mono rig.
