Please understand that there is an omnipresent fear of old age and how much money is enough - no social security, children may not take care, may be abroad, end of life care is expensive, medical coverage may not be enough. This uncertainty alone is enough for people to not spend even if they have seemingly enough. We don't take well to uncertainties - be it dying young or living too long.
To have certainty requires safety net, medical support from the gov, good public hospitals like in the West. Otherwise it's impossible for middle class to bear big expenses in old age like a cancer treatment, serious injury, high inflation, etc.

I heard my father telling my mother arrogantly that I didn't have to make houses , because of which I am able to be better than what he was at early 30s. Background : my father is an ex govt officer, I have been educated in govt school (around zero fees), govt engg colleges ( state govt college and masters at old IIT where fees are all total less that 1 lakh)
Imagine whatever academic achievement you made, your father had decided not to expose you to all that. Good video and excellent observation.. although the question is how to overcome the fear of the future and not lose that safety net. Middle class people still live in guilt to spend and that voice at the back of the mind keeps taunting if we indulge sometime on something and some time later we need money for some other genuine reason or emergency.. we are not very comfortable with abundance and still live in a scarcity mindset, fearing the future..
