Would slightly bent push rods cause the engine not to start? What would cause the middle push rods to come off the rockers? Bend? I have a 2012. XP that died quietly idling. Pulled valve cover and middle rods were off. What could cause that. Should I just change the rods or is there a more serious underlying condition. Thank you in advance.

You think losing compression is the pistons or just head gasket?

I have a 04 ranger 700 xp. Lots of blowby. I am going to rebuild the top end. Is it the same as this 800. Where do you get your parts. Thank you

Sorry about the slow reply, yes the 700 is almost identical to the 800. I get my parts from Polaris, but there are other parts sources out there. If yours is burning excessive oil more than likely the Pistons are scored and the bore will need to be replaced or rechromed. Us Chrome can rechrome and hone the boar for you for about $150 less than buying a new bore from Polaris. But will take you more time to get it. If you buy a new boar pistons and gaskets from Polaris you will be looking at around seven hundred to $800. Best of luck to you

I wouldn't be against replacing them if they needed it- Polaris's tech manual says to clean the head bolts and holes before installing. Nothing about replacement.
I have rebuilt several engines never replacing head bolts, and then run them thousands of hours without head gasket, or any other engine failure.
There are certain engines out there that need to have head bolt replacement, usually on engines that use torque to yield specs. if you don't replace them, you'll have head gaskets blown in a very short period. These are not one of those engines.

Did you say this can be done with it still on the machine?

    Finally. Some common sense.

Actually you're wrong about removing the head bolts and you never reuse them. To understand, read about angular torque and head bolts and you'll understand.
