    Just wanted to note a couple things about the pet section in case others end up reading. As medical recommendations change quickly over time.
    Pet poison hotline has a staff of toxicologists on staff to advise. When you pay that fee you are getting the consult along with your case number that will be followed. If the ER doctor working on their case needs additional help they can call them and give them the case number to discuss further. The cost of this is 100% worth it since they have the most up to date information on how toxic something may be. Pet ERs do not usually have a toxicologist on staff.
    Also giving hydrogen peroxide in most cases is no longer recommended due to gastric issues that can arise from it. Please do not administer hydrogen peroxide unless directed by pet poison hotline or your veterinarian.

    • @nataliesluvinu
      @nataliesluvinu Před rokem +10

      My dogs got into an oatmeal raisin cookie one day and the poison hotline literally walked me step by step through whether to administer hydrogen peroxide (had to bc of how toxic raisins are), advising immediate transport to an ER, worked with the ER to discuss. Simply having a voice of reason in a moment of pure terror is something I can look back and be grateful for. The fee is ALWAYS worth it. Especially to ultimately save you trips. There was another instance my dogs got into something that is toxic but they were able to advise based on weight, calculations of amount consumed, etc. NOT to go to ER and get fined the high charges unless I saw X symptoms develop which were highly unlikely (and did not ultimately happen). All pet owners should have that number on hand at all times!!

    • @DrAshleysNails
      @DrAshleysNails Před 11 měsíci

      As a vet, thank you. Pet poison helpline isn’t a scam or money grab to get more money before you even take your animal in. It gives you and your vet (if needed) information on what to expect from the toxin/effects and what the best treatments are.
      You also might save yourself money if you call the number before you take them to the vet and they tell you what they ate isn’t actually toxic or at a toxic dose etc, especially after hours as the call is usually cheaper than an emergency vet visit fee. It’s impossible for a general vet or emergency vet to have/keep up on every toxic thing, doses and symptoms so it’s best to have expert guidance when it’s available! It really is a great resource for pet owners and vets!

    Becky's traumatic shower story reminds me of mine, in which I was home alone showering when the fire alarm went off. The only times in the past that my alarms have gone off were due to cooking, and no one else was home to be doing that, so I really expected the worst. After a moment of panic I ran out dripping wet to start figuring out my escape route... And I realized it was coming from the alarm right outside the bathroom. It must have been triggered by steam escaping from the door I'd left ajar. I then had to haul my wet ass across the house to carry a chair over in order to reach the off button, then towel off the puddles I'd left all over the floor, then finally go back in to finish my shower. I've been much more careful with the door latch since then.

    For the stains, I would suggest spot treating before you wash. It's the heat from the drier that seals in the stain. So if you spot clean first and let it air dry, if the spot treatment didn't work you can try again. And every stain is different as to how to get it out but for white clothing items I like to use Clorox Bleach Pen. And then Clorox has a spray for stains on colored clothing. But if it's grease you use dish soap and laundry detergent, if it's blood you use cold water and soap, etc.

    For Becky regarding lasering, you should absolutely try again. I have terrible ingrowns and really dark hair but it’s working super well. but you have to shave right before. If you don’t the laser only burns off the hairs on-top and doesn’t get down to the root. Also if you can, avoid the old-school stamp laser (there are new ones that can be run over you rapidly and I found it hurt less and was wayyy more effective).

    My mom used to clean houses for a v long time. For Spring cleaning windows, we used a bucket of hot water with a drop of dawn dish soap, a drop of Pert shampoo (green bottle? Super cheap), and a dash of white vinegar.
    Screens, window treatments, inside or outside of the window sills..... it takes care of it all. An old rag for the tough cleaning, and a wet microfiber cloth as a last once-over.

    From a knitter/wool wear-er: hand wash wool in cool/cold water with shampoo. Rinse in the same temp water. you can then roll it up in an old towel and step on it to get moisture out then dry flat. :) If you have scratchy wool, you can soak it in a little conditioner to soften it a little.

    I have had cats all my life and had always had cat litter everywhere. About 4 months ago I switched to tidy cats breeze litter mainly cause my kitty has bad asthma and I wish I had of switched years ago. I also bought a litter genie, game changer. So now I need the litter, pee pads and bags for the litter genie and I'm still saving almost 50% of what I stent before. But the best part is that I don't have litter all over my house. They do still kick out a few pieces here and there but its nothing compared to before. Its an investment at first but if you are sick of the dust and the tracking of litter you should look into it. The only negative (which isn't fully a negative) is their pee drains to a compartment onto a pee pad the negative part is if you don't change it often enough the pad can't absorb all the pee. I learned this lesson this morning. I have a sensitive nose and was shocked I didn't smell it. I'm in love with this system

    Please do not use laundry detergent to make your dog vomit; it could cause trauma to their mouth depending on the type of detergent. Hydrogen peroxide is a way to get your dog to vomit but using too much can be bad. So we usually recommend, call your vet (they will recommend an amount) try it once at home and if you dog doesn't vomit then go ahead and load the dog in the car (cover your seats and floors just in case they vomit on the way). At the hospital we have IV drugs that can cause a dog to vomit like *snaps fingers* that.
    ALSO a no no no is if your pet ate a large sock or got into the trash (not sure what they ate), we recommend bringing the patient in because they can choke or cause trauma during the vomit.
    If your dog has vomited a lot we can give them SQ fluids so they can recover the fluid loss! I am a recent graduated veterinarian.
    I love the pod cast and all you guys!

  • @amberdawn5372
    @amberdawn5372 Před 11 měsíci +1

    What Matt says about vets requiring a consult/case number from the pet poison helpline may be true for some vets, but it is definitely not a universal thing. Contacting the helpline is for sure highly recommended because it can save you hundreds in unnecessary emergency vet fees (expect a $100-150+ base charge just to be seen at an off-hours emergency clinic depending on your location, before adding in any testing/treatment/monitoring fees) if the estimated dose is below what would require any medical intervention beyond a simple at-home purge (which they will walk you through). In most* cases DO NOT induce vomiting without medical guidance because it can be contraindicated depending on how long ago it was eaten and in the case of some substances it can cause more harm coming out (i.e. corrosive chemicals and cleaners, batteries, gasoline, etc.). *If you've had conversations with your vet beforehand because you know your dog likes to get into something common like grapes/raisins or chocolate and they've advised you what to do in future instances that's a bit different, but you should still contact the helpline/vet to see if a visit is also necessary.
    But if your pet is already exhibiting symptoms after eating something the majority of vets will tell you to bring them in immediately anyway, and worry about contacting poison control themselves once the pet is there if they need to consult the toxicologists for further treatment information.

It creates a deadly chemical that you do not want to breath in. If someone ever uses bleach to clean cat pee or a cat box open all the windows you can, turn on every fan you have and make sure to hold your breath while rinsing and or scrubbing the area with water. You may have to scrub the area and or cat box a few times. I just thought I'd mention this just in case because some people just don't know.

      Do you mix it with something else? It seems expensive compared to your average cleaner being a few dollars.

    A) I am definitely listening to this while doing my dishes
    B) it’s so important to teach your children housekeeping, which starts by them seeing how you keep the house! Also, if I’ve learnt anything from Montessori, it’s that kids WANT to help. They WANT to learn how to clean.

    It is impossible for me to clean out my clothes because I never know when I might need something for a costume themed party or a festival costume. If it has sequins or neon, it will likely stay in the closet for years longer than it needs to. I have a drawer of lingerie I've only worn for my partner a couple times, because I wear it at festivals or raves with pasties underneath.

    I've had to call the doggie poison control! I definitely had to pay 95$ through my tears before they'd answer any of questions. And my emergency vet referred me to them. It was 95$ for them to tell me he was probably fine and the plants were non toxic and just to monitor. But I'd do it again 😅

    Hi guys,
    Love the pod! Just a little PSA, if you wouldn’t mind please avoid using the term OCD as Rachel does in this unless you have it. (If she does I apologize!) Like saying “I’m so OCD” it kind of supports the stereotype that OCD suffers just like things clean and orderly and that’s not what OCD is. It makes it seems like OCD is just a cute quirky little personality trait and it’s not. OCD can be devastating, disruptive, and detrimental to us who have it. I have scars, I have been late places, I have cancelled plans, I have been unable to leave places, and more because of my OCD.
    I have OCD, and I am not a super clean person. That’s not how mine manifests. OCD can manifests in different ways. Just cleaning forms of OCD are NOT the only one. It’s not cute and quirky. You DON’T want it.

    BECKY-for the stain! I swear. I know this sounds crazy. Disney World. Lol Hear me out. Disney Basin Fresh Cut Soap - Dr. Spot Fabric Stain Remover. It’s a block, super old school you have to wet a clean tooth brush and brush it to get some of the stain remover on it then brush the stain really good and let it set. You can even do it a few times and let it keep sitting as long as you want at this point if it’s already been in there a minute anyway! I’d be really interested to see if it’d help because I have yet to see anything this stuff can’t get out. No matter how old. Seriously.
