As a Belgian I was watching this game with friends in a bar. I must say I wasn't really depressed after that game, when being beaten by the world's best player in maybe his best game ever. And I should add that the whole Argentinian team was great that day, it was a pleasure to watch. RIP Diego.

@@khispanoatlantico7044 Messi plays against tougher opponents these days! You can have now 11 players with 11 different nationalities! Like realmadrid in the 00s with cannavaro, carlos, Zidane, beckam, michatovic, figo and many more in one team! In those days you could only have three players with different nationalities at the time in a match! And Messi plays 20 years on the same level at the top while maradona had his ups and downs! And IF you looke at assists and goal average per game than messi scores double the statistics that Maradona has. Also messi holds nine or eight records! Also Messi stood 4 or 5 times in the finals with Argentina but Valdano and Caniga scored more than Aguero or Higuain for the national team AT a tournament! How often did aguero or higuain missed for open goal! Now I don't say Messi is better or Today's football players are more powerfull and more athletic but Statistics say nothing for one match or one year But says EVERTHING during your football career of 20 years! Do not forget that! Look it up Average per game and compare! I know that Messi scored more in Champions League but that is not fair! Messi plays more matches to reach the finals or scored more for Argentina becaus now you must play every country 2 times in south america to qualify for the world cup. That means you play 18 matches and maradona played 6 matches! SO we take ALL matches in career and devide them in all goals and assists! Messi scored 2 times more and 2 times more assists! All I want to say is be carefull to compare them!

@@redouancheikh6057 It is more about the hole Maradona life during his golden days. In the field Diego was a leader , Lio not that much. The heroe status of Maradona aplying his magic to kill dragons saving his nation etc is something unique. He plays against England after the war between Argentina and British, he played in a very small team and take it to the top, ask any Napolitan about Maradona. Messi is also unique, , for me not so visual but not less talented, anyway is not about wining and how manyu goals , is the style and the myth. The thing with Diego is how he was borned raised and praised, borned to play , recorded like a Big Brother of life. The only argument people have to defend Messi over Maradona is his stats. The sheer number of his goals. But stats have context. Did the bulk of his goals come in normal league games or in important finals? Did the bulk of his goals come against teams like Getafe and Osasuna or against Germany and Real Madrid? How did he perform in the big games? Was the team around him good or was he their only hope? Out of all the goals how many were penalties? Also the harshness of tackles and referees' indulgence? And then, of course, we have our eyes. And heart.

I try to be honest and look at trees for what they are, rather than be over-owed by forests.
For me, the greatest players must play for the full 90 minutes, not confining themselves to brilliant flashes that bring goals and long rest periods in between.
They say that power corrupts, and so it does and in football there is another devil
. . . money. When a player has acquired enough money, he quite naturally starts to think that keeping his legs in one piece is more important than entertaining the fans and knowing that there are opponents who will kick him if he turns it on, for too many of the modern players lived on their reputations.
Stars such as Maradona, Cruyff (at his peak) and Eusebio (for most of his career), lived on their reputations. They are entitled to do that - if they can get away with it. But in my book too many stars today take little breaks, or in the case of Maradona long breaks; hiding in the midfield jungle, once their team is winning.
I want teams to try and entertain the fans for the whole 90 minutes and try and win 10-0 every time. That means that all 11 players on the park, have to do it for 90 minutes.
The fact that Maradona, Cruyff, Eusebio and many others today do not give 100 per cent for the whole game, is due to their manager’s lack of character and a general lack of discipline.

This is one of the greatest debates in sports and we aren’t going to settle it any time soon. You won’t be the person - out of the entire internet - that provides the definitive answer.
Second of all, Pele’s club career wasn’t nearly as distinguished as Maradona’s or Messi’s. Like it or not, European clubs were head and shoulders ahead of Brazil back then and still are today. Just because Brazil had a dominant national team doesn’t mean they had a strong league. A national team is 11 players. A league is 16-19 teams. That’s less than one great player per team. And many of Brazil’s nationals were pele’s teammates at Santos.

@@SKa-tt9nm Well, i guess you know little about football, to say European clubs were ahead of brazilian at that time? Lol you've got to be kidding me, well, It is expected anyway, tou europeans are arrogant and know shit about south american football anyway other than little curiosities (we brazilians, on the other way around know a lot about European football and football here on South America). No, European clubs weren't better than South American football back than, in fact South American Clubs were BETTER for decades, so much so that when European clubs faced Brazilian ir argentinian clubs for example, they were almost always beaten (either in club world competitions or any kind of competition at all) and it remained as such until the 90's when European clubs began to earn a lot of money from their competitions and began to build team with international stars in the their ranks (If we had that kind of money, we would do the same and even better) and Just for curiosity sake, i'm a historian and i'll tell you a little bit of History: did you know that the Champions League was inspired by continental competitions that happened here on South America back in the 1950's, probably you don't! That was tô begin with, now we'll talk about Pelé himself, his club career wasn't as distinguished? 1960's Santos was the best team in the whole world, they won the Copa Libertadores (SA's main continental competitions) 2 times and beat EUROPEAN clubs both times in the international competition, First one was Eusebio's Benfica, Santos massacred them and after that, they defeated Milan, one of the best teams in the world at that time, Pelé received offers from all European clubs at that time and he rejected them all and did you know why? Because Santos was the best team in the world at that time, better than all.european clubs, why the fuck would he play in Europe? Maradona never won main continental competitions, neither in Europe, nor South America (only an Europa League equivalent with Napoli), world cups? Maradona has one, Pelé has THREE! Goals? Pelé has much more! So pay attention to not being anachronic saying "European football was better", no It wan't, It was weaker! It has being as such since late 90's and that's because of the money, we'd do the same with with that much quid in our pockets, since you are what you are today because tou buy Young star players all over the world, specially us brazilians! What would you be today without South American players? Makes me laugh... And we are 5 times Champions of the world, world Record, England is one, and because you played at home, lol!

Stars such as Maradona, Cruyff (at his peak) and Eusebio (for most of his career), lived on their reputations. They are entitled to do that - if they can get away with it. But in my book too many stars take little breaks, or in the case of Maradona long breaks; hiding in the midfield jungle, once their team is winning.

That's true leadership. Despite his talent and self-confidence, he ALWAYS put the team first - there are many examples of him making a great solo run with a chance to score a historical goal similar to the one against England, but in the end he chose to pass because his teammate was in a slightly better position to finish.

      did you record it?
Never has there been a world cup such dominated by the influences of one man. My father swears hes never seen a better player than Diego Armando Maradona. In 86 world cup, Argentina scored 14 goals in the tournament and 5 were assisted by Maradona and another 5 scored by Maradona. I am a messi fan, but hes no maradona. He has the skills but the mentality, the drive I dont know - he seems weak from outside whereas maradona against those english defenders, the pitch and the stage - he performed.
No doubt his second goal was the best in history because it was so much more than just a football match. It was the history that the both countries had and just to imagine, that a player like Maradona did the 2 most audacious thing against the English just seems unfathomable.
He scored with his hand that no one saw, only a defender I believe but it was so cunning, so devious and quick I think the english players only suspected maradona couldn't have jumped that high over shilton therefore protested.
and the second one goal- well nothing has to be said about that. It's genius. In front of 120,000 fans in Aztec stadium. Just to think, that if maradona had got sent off after the first goal, there would have been no maradona's second goal and who knows? maybe even the post great Napoli Maradona would have never been as great.
People fails to realise that Maradona is not great just for his world cup heroic but also what he did in Napoli. With that group of players and that squad, they still haven't won Seria A since he left. He's a god figure - I doubt ronado or messi would go to a mid table team and drag them to being league champions in probably the toughest league at that time.
It was just meant to be. Even I admit that.
