When I was younger I went down a deactivated logging road, used some orienteering skills to walk off the path. I went where humans probably hadn’t been for 5+ years.
I built a lean-to shelter and brought minimal gear and stayed for two nights
I will never forget
It was combination of pure fear (mostly at night cause of howling and hearing footsteps around me) but also huge sense of accomplishment when I did things like start a fire, find some wild food, etc. and just knowing I could actually do it
Of course before I went and did this I already had lots of camping experience, especially the orienteering knowledge.
God bless you and thank you for sharing your inspiring testimony with us!
I was hoping that our dear Father Mark would give you a "well deserved" heart! ♥️

@@RyanMacWee 😊 This reminds me of a time I went camping way off grid. In bear country. In an area prone to summer thunderstorms. Thankful I had my dog with me. Bear did come into camp snooping around. Didn't find anything. But I did better cat napping in the day than sleeping at night. By the time i got home I was exhausted. But I loved that trip.
Yeah.... Don't venture into abandoned places. It's really dangerous. Wildlife and bad people might cross your path. If you want to prove your resilience, I suggest you embrace a humble and minimalist lifestyle. Forget about your looks and only use the internet when truly needed. After you've done all of that, I can 100% guarantee that everywhere you go will be like wilderness.
Coincidentally, I just heard that when one is in bear country it's MUCH MORE DANGEROUS if one has a dog. That's what'll cause bears to go off.
Thanks be to God you lived to tell us about your experience. I'm a woman & would NEVER do something like that although I've had a few encounters with bears. 🙏
@@MsSeckert i think I was lucky with the dog I had. She was a thinker. She didn't crazy bark. She stayed in shadow, put on her deepest bark, and barked once. Just a "go away" bark, and watched. Bear looked around, didn't see where it came from, and walked off. Would I have been happier if I had some wilderness savy man with me? Yep. But there wasn't one. And I now Know, me, God and nature, we got this!
I am no longer a young man, I am 61 and in failing health. I have led a full life, but as I near the end of my time I have come to recognize (as did Ecclesiastes) that all of our labour in life, all of our achievements, are ultimately in vain. Father Goring’s advice to escape to the wilderness is spot on. Although technology has opened so many doors, I miss the first 30 years of my pre-Internet life when (if I was bored) I would simply walk outside and look up at the sky. I would gaze at the stars and the drifting clouds and contemplate the mystery and wonder of our Creator. Or look down at the ants crawling along the forest floor, and the autumn leaves blowing in the wind. Unfortunately, however, so much (not all) of what is online (and even what is not online!) is just useless chatter that crowds out our relationship with God. I am no longer a young man, but Father Goring’s advice has planted a seed in my heart. The question is, would I ever want to leave the wilderness?
I love listening to you. Very thought provoking .
Beautiful, wonderful, and powerful testimony! Thanks for sharing, and no, you will never wish to leave the wilderness...:)
That's exactly what happened to me, 9 years ago, and two years later, I persuaded my husband and I to move to the Sierra Nevadas foothills of Northern California. A year later, we survived the worst fire in our state's history, (The 2018 Campfire 🔥), and we're still living up here in the wilderness.
God bless you!
Shalom! 🕊️🔥💙🙏
I am a 66 year old man, and one man, any man, can affect the world in a great way in a day. I hope your health gets better.
How can I buy the Hold My Beer t-shirt for my husband and sons?
Wonderful insight. God bless.
As a father of 4 young men, I thank you Father for your great proposal. Manhood is key nowadays: we need brave men to defend family and faith.
Amen and as a mother .. thank you for choosing this role God sanctified. We need more and more men who accept the role of fatherhood, over running from it.
yes, we do...but they needed to be raised to be men, and what destroyed that was premarital sex, contraception, porn and the internet...toxic combo the killed much. We ladies in waiting, for our men who are being raised by moms only to be little boys forever, ain't helping. So thank you for being a man and raising men.

Referring to US citizens, I am certain. Half of our households do not have a husband man nor father in them. Yes mne abandoned in this culture. We also abandoned our elderly, yes.

I think Jordan Peterson attempts to do it in his own way.

I have to agree with you. The government has facilitated the breakdown of the family unit through the feminist movement and emasculation of men.
Twelve years ago, I drove to the site of an abandoned railroad tunnel in Colorado (Alpine) at 11,500 feet in the evening. I slept a bit in my minivan and got out at 0300. The temperature had dropped to 32 degrees in late June. There was no moon and few clouds. The starlight was bright enough to read a map! The constellations leapt out at me. "Oh Lord, how great is the glory of Thy creation!" 😊

Fr. You’re not wrong. I stopped taking my phone with me to work (I’m a landscaper for upscale mansions) and it’s so peaceful. It fosters an environment where you on your own feel not only encouraged to pray but to just openly speak to God. Ordo et labora is very real and powerful.
There’s a real world sect of ceremonial magicians that believe they can summon demons. They do it is via the usual circles and triangles chalked on the ground in the stereotypical manner. But also use an black obsidian mirror as a means for the demon to speak through via reflection. I think of that a lot when I consider my smartphone.
Yes, Ora et Labora is very powerful. We are to pray without ceasing and no electronics helps a lot.

Did my "rite of passage" when I was 23 (I'm 48) or so by camping alone in NH. The first night it stormed and I had to sleep in a rainsuit in a flooded tent hahaha. The next few nights were terrifying because I had never camped alone. I had flown out of LA to NH for this and had never really traveled alone. It is scary at first but you walk away a different person.
Technology keeps us from daily mental prayer.
Very true
My husband spent many days alone in the Badlands of South Dakota when we were just dating. I knew when he proposed that he was fearless and could lead our family - and he has, it’s been 32 years.
I am 76 and have always enjoyed short periods of solitude in nature. Where I live it is easy to get away from people in the woods and fields. It is not easy in England to find wilderness, Scotland is easier but means many hours of driving first. SO, I ride my motor cycle alone through/around the moorlands and dales, I call it wind therapy, it clears my mind of the crap we are bombarded with these days. Always enjoy your talks.
Sounds wonderful! 😊
You’re a breath of fresh air!
Father I appreciate the man you are
I love going out camping in nature with my young grandsons 7 & 5 years.
We make a campfire and sleep rough. We go hiking and collect firewood and water from the river. They love hiking, and we pray the rosary together. In the quietyou get to hear our Lord speaking to your heart. I take my grandsons as they do not have a present father or grandfather. They love being with Grandma. I'm 57 and take my grandsons hiking all the time. I bought them a compass and taught them how to use it. I trained as a volunteer with the State Emergency Service and love sharing what I learned with them. They are awesome boys who absolutely love our Blessed Mother.
This is a fantastic idea, Father Mark. It's so good for your soul ❤🙏
So nice to make these wonderful memories for your grandkids. 😊
That’s awesome !
🌟 Great video Father, on a very important subject. I'm older now, but when I was younger, I went out several times alone. It changes you somehow. When you're out alone in the wilderness, you hear God's voice inside you better. You're not distracted by the constant noise of the modern world. It's just you, the Lord, and nature. It changes you and helps a guy mature. Add some prayer and a gold pan, and you have the perfect "sourdough" adventure. The old miners ate a lot of sourdough bread because it was easy to make, and lasted much longer than regular bread. You were living the high life with some sourdough, some jerky,a can of beans, and coffee. There was no McDonalds or jack in the box. Today's young men need to test themselves, and live an adventure or two.
🌟 I think you're quickly becoming the catholic version of Survivorman. Can't wait to see your next adventure video. Just you and a gopro in a tree for a few days. Great concept. Don't forget the sourdough.

That’s not why you should go to church. Because you like the preacher. You should go because you are Christlike , And the Bible says to forsake not, the assembling of ourselves
This is excellent advice. Our young men grew up attached from the womb to this modern technology. They have been robbed of the natural process of discovery of self and mission without the digital interference constantly telling you how to be a good little robot.

Good idea for young men, better to prove one’s manhood 3 days alone in wilderness rather than going to war and spending many nights in the jungles. A young man gets very close to God when one lives that experience. I personally wouldn’t recommend that right of passage. Father you have a great message for our young men keep up the good work.
Good luck Father Goring. Enjoy yourseF.

You are right, Fr. Mark. When I was young I thought all this with men needing to prove themselves was just ego, but I discovered, it's not. I've seen where men really grow into themselves by doing things such as this. It's seems to be a form of self discovery. Not a bad idea for women, either. But lets focus on the guys now. I feel our modern era has been really detrimental to a lot of men. Be smart. Make your list. Go into the forest. Oh, and head lamps are definitely the way to go! So nice to have both hands free. And maybe a book on the local flora and fauna. I pray many young men are able to take up your challenge. Keep safe out there. Be smart, but Go
