- Russian Forces Attempt Ground Offensive into Ukraine’s Kharkiv, Opening New Front in War
Russian forces launched an armoured ground attack on Ukraine’s Kharkiv region opening a new front in the war. According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence, Russian forces tried to breach Ukrainian defences near the town of Vovchansk with “armoured vehicles” hitting the area along with aerial attacks. The governor of the Kharkiv region said that at least two civilians were killed and five were injured during heavy shelling of border settlements. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that reinforcement was sent in as fighting raged in the border areas of the region. He added that his forces were ready for the attack. Zelensky further vowed to defend the region amid Russia’s attacks.

I would take issue with your description of it as a "surprise". Anyone who's been watching closely, and listening to Ukrainians, would say it was hardly a surprise. Maybe to some media, east and west, who have taken their eyes off the ball.
