  • Hardy AROIDS going Dormant in Winter - Sauromatum giganteum
If you keep hardy aroids in the UK you will know that they have a dormancy cycle. Many plant species that exhibit dormancy have an internal clock that tells them when to slow activity and to prepare for a period of freezing temperatures, lower light levels or water shortage.
Dormancy can be triggered after a normal growing season by decreasing temperatures, shortened day length, and/or a reduction in rainfall. Aroids that can tolerate the UK weather for most of the year may need to go dormant to survive in the Winter months. These can either be left in the ground, dug up and dry stored inside or in a dry potting medium.
Hardy Aroid care is very different from that of Aroids living as houseplants that ‘mostly’ don’t go dormant. If you have ever kept Caladium, you will have seen this behaviour indoors.
In this video form the new Aroid greenhouse I’ll go through how I get a Sauromatum giganteum ready to be stored for the winter months.
    Hardy Aroids can include:
    Arisaema
    Arum
    Arisarum
    Biarum
    Sauromatum
    Amorphophallus
    Helicodicerous
    Colocasia
    Remasutia
    Gorgonidium and many more.
Aroid care differs for each genera.

This is the first of the new videos from the new Aroid greenhouse so forgive any mess as I set things up and get organised.
It’s coming into Winter now so outdoor aroids in the UK are either going to sleep or waking up! Let’s focus on those that are getting ready to go dormant.
