  • Sauromatum venosum Life Cycle. - Following a Tuber for a year
One of my favourite of the Hardy Aroid the mighty Sauromatum venosum.
I'm going to follow just one tuber (Rupert!) for 1 year and see how he gets on as he grows an inflorescence, his leaves and then I'm hoping he will set seed for us.
This species emerges from a tuber and develops into an inflorescence with a purple spadix and a yellowish spathe speckled with big purple dots. The inflorescence grows before the green leaf emerges. Its 9-11 leaflets, each measuring up to 40 centimetres, are borne atop a towering petiole. Mature flowers give off a smell that has been called "putrid" and likened to decaying meat. Insects like flies are drawn to the smell and help pollinate the plant. This plant produces heat on its own, just like certain other aroids.

As long as the petiole is coming out of a node. The meristematic cells are found in the areas around the nodes and you need those cells to spark growth. They root in days for me in the X-stream

Got to be one of my top hardy aroids. I want to follow this guy for a year and watch as he develops an inflorescence, hopefully a seed head , his roots and leaves and then end the season larger!

I wonder if there is a clear substrate you could grow it in to see the underground changes.

@@jogg6404thats an awesome idea. I've done that with more rhizomatus aroids between two sheets of glass but I'll have to have a think about how to do it with a half kilo tuner. That would be so exciting to see

Hiya I just ordered a tuber from eBay, as and it has arrived as 2 tiny bulbs already planted in a pot of soil. Do I take them out and wait for the spike to start growing and then plant once flowered as in your videos? I ask cos I also bought what was advertised as a Dracanculus last year but must of been one of these, as I left that in soil and it died… thanks for any help!
